Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), though rare, are associated with neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1 and may cause significant gastrointestinal bleeding. A 42-year-old male with NF1 presented with severe hematochezia and underwent initial non-contrast CT, which was negative for abnormalities. Subsequent endoscopies and PillCam studies also revealed no clear bleeding source.

A simple, readily-prepared precipitant (1⋅Cl) precipitates oxalate or terephthalate from water with very high efficacy, removing these anions at sub-millimolar concentrations using only one equivalent of precipitant. A simple aqueous base/acid cycle can be used to regenerate 1⋅Cl after use. The resulting precipitates, 1⋅oxalate and 1⋅terephthalate, are anhydrous and closely-packed, with each anion receiving eight charge-assisted hydrogen bonds from amidinium N-H donors.

Dysregulation of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) has been shown to correlate with cancer cell proliferation and drug resistance. Thus, monitoring the activity of RTKs at a chemical level could provide new biomedical insights and methods to assess the drug efficacy. However, direct monitoring of kinase activity is challenging and most commonly relies on techniques such as Western blotting and ELISAs.

Armed conflict has negative mental health impacts on internally displaced people and refugees, however, much less is known of its effects on the mental health of displaced people and refugees with disabilities. We use pan-European data (N = 9,676), collected via an internet health needs survey across April-July 2022, to examine the mental health impacts of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine on the mental health of displaced people with disabilities during the first months of the war. Regression models separately examined associations between functional impairment (vision, walking, existing mental health condition), access to healthcare, welfare payments, and anxiety and sleep quality, controlling for sociodemographic variables.

  • The gut microbiota significantly impacts human health, with changes linked to various diseases, but the specific cellular mechanisms behind these effects are not fully understood.
  • This study investigated how metabolites derived from the gut microbiome, such as butyrate and l-tryptophan, affect the intestinal barrier and immune responses at a cellular level.
  • Results showed that most metabolites enhance gut barrier function, though butyrate increased cell death while helping maintain barrier integrity, highlighting the complex role of microbiome metabolites in host health and disease.

  • - Lung neuroendocrine tumors (LNETs) are rare and increasingly diagnosed tumors, and this study examines their diagnosis, treatment, and survival trends among patients with low to intermediate grades.
  • - A review of 59 patients revealed that surgical treatment led to significantly better five-year overall survival (83%) compared to non-surgical options (44%), although metastatic disease had a poor prognosis (39% survival for stage IV).
  • - The study emphasizes that while there are multiple treatment options, the lack of established guidelines for treatment sequencing indicates a need for improved evidence-based practices in managing LNETs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to analyze trends in the diagnosis of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) from June 2010 to June 2021, particularly looking at any changes during the early COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Out of 647 GEP-NET patients assessed, most had advanced disease at diagnosis, with the small bowel being the most common primary site, while early-stage diagnoses saw a slight increase over the decade.
  • The frequency of GEP-NET diagnoses remained relatively stable, except for lower gastrointestinal cases, which notably increased after mid-2017, possibly due to the implementation of new detection methods in Ontario.

Selective anion recognition remains a key challenge in supramolecular chemistry: only a very small number of systems that can function in water are known, and these nearly always preferentially bind hydrophobic anions. In this work, we report three robust hexa-cationic cages that can be prepared on scales up to 14 g in two simple and high-yielding steps from commercially available materials. One of these cages displays unusually strong sulfate binding in water ( = 12,000 M), and demonstrates high selectivity for this anion over HPO/HPO in DMSO/buffer mixtures.
