A retrospective study was undertaken of weight gain during the first year after diagnosis of breast cancer in three groups of women with localized disease. Group I consisted of 307 women with clinical or pathological node-negative breast cancer and Group II of 139 women with clinical or pathological node-positive breast cancer. Neither of these groups received systemic adjuvant therapy.

Radiographic methods of determining bone density have been available for many years, but recently most of the efforts in this field have focused on the development of instruments which would accurately and automatically measure bone density by absorption, or by the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT). Single energy absorptiometers using I-125 have been available for some years, and have been used primarily for measurements on the radius, although recently equipment for measuring the os calcis has become available. Accuracy of single energy measurements is about 3% to 5%; precision, which has been poor because of the difficulty of exact repositioning, has recently been improved by automatic methods so that it now approaches 1% or better.

A critical appraisal was undertaken of the evidence that dietary fat intake is related to breast cancer risk by application of the criteria for causal inference proposed by Bradford Hill to the published evidence that relates dietary fat to breast cancer risk in humans. These criteria concern the consistency, strength, and temporal relationships of possible causative associations and also require the existence of a biologic gradient and examine the extent to which the proposed causal association is in keeping with other biological and epidemiological knowledge. The published reports were inconsistent in their ability to detect a significant association between dietary fat and breast cancer risk, correlation studies that examined the effect of fat over large ranges being largely positive, and studies with stronger designs (case-control, cohort) that examined fat intake over much smaller ranges being largely negative.

The use of a gamma camera for single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging places greater demand on camera performance than does planar imaging, since camera specifications that are adequate for planar imaging may produce serious image artifacts in SPECT. Manufacturers have responded to the challenge with improvements in both hardware and software, but the user must pay careful attention to quality control procedures. Field nonuniformity is caused mainly by spatial distortion, which may vary during rotation; some cameras incorporate a means of automatically correcting for angular changes.

A prospective randomised trial to compare radiotherapy and cryotherapy in the treatment of basal-cell carcinomas was carried out in 93 patients. Two years after treatment, 4% of tumours treated with radiotherapy and 39% of those treated with cryotherapy had recurred. It is concluded that cryotherapy does not offer a satisfactory alternative to radiotherapy in the treatment of basal-cell carcinomas.

A set of hydrophilic fluorescent dyes of known molecular weight has been used to determine the molecular exclusion limit and the extent of apical, epidermal and cortical symplasts in the root, stem and leaf of Egeria densa. These dyes are unable to pass the plasmalemma, so that any cell-to-cell movement of injected dye must occur via the symplast. The shoot-apex symplast has a high molecular exclusion limit, excluding dyes with a molecular weight of 749 dalton (fluorescein hexaglycine) and greater but allowing dyes of up to 665 dalton (fluorescein diglutamic acid) to pass.

Guinea pigs were exposed to 120 dB white noise for 30 min and evidenced a four-fold elevation in plasma concentration of the potent vasoconstricting hormone angiotensin II (AII). Anesthetized animals received intra-arterial injections of AII at doses that approximated the endogenous levels measured following noise exposure. A marked decrease in skin blood flow was observed with a concomitant increase in cochlear blood flow as measured by laser Doppler flowmeters.

The relationship between stimulus intensity and the uptake of 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) in the cochlea of the gerbil was studied using an autoradiographic technique. In silence, incorporation of labeled 2-DG into stria vascularis and the spiral ligament was significantly higher than for other inner ear structures. With increasing intensity of noise exposure, 2-DG uptake in the spiral ganglion and VIIIth nerve increased dramatically when compared to the lateral wall structures.

Cochlear blood flow was studied in guinea pigs, using a laser Doppler system during exposure to methoxamine hydrochloride and phentolamine hydrochloride, local cooling, or terminal asphyxia. Measurements were made through the intact lateral wall of the first turn of the cochlea. Observed changes in relationship to simultaneous measures of skin blood flow and BP indicated that this system provides a dynamic measure of inner ear blood flow.

Twenty-eight patients with histologically proven carcinoma were studied on two dynamic and six static mattress surfaces to determine which mattress surface would provide the least skin surface pressure at the sacrum, dorsal spine, trochanter and heels. Measurements were taken with an especially designed inflatable bladder, and the mean of the maximum skin surface pressures was determined for the static and dynamic surfaces in the inflated and deflated state. Using less than or equal to 32 mm Hg as the skin surface pressure at which the arteriolarcapillary blood flow is interrupted, we concluded that the mud gel bed generally tended to record the lowest skin surface pressure for all of the sites.
