Article Synopsis
  • The bioanalytical community traditionally uses blank matrices from preclinical animals for method validation, as required by guidelines, but this practice is increasingly being questioned.
  • Despite scientific support for using surrogate matrices instead, regulatory bodies remain hesitant to accept them for most cases, only allowing them for rare situations.
  • The European Bioanalysis Forum is advocating for the broader acceptance of surrogate matrices, emphasizing ethical considerations and the need for continued discussions, backed by new experimental data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how socioeconomic status (SES) indicators like education and job type relate to alcohol use among individuals with mental health issues.
  • It utilized data from the 2014 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, analyzing 1,436 participants to categorize them into SES classes and assess their alcohol consumption patterns.
  • The findings revealed distinct SES classes, with those labeled "economically inactive, GCSE-level and lower educated, social renters" showing the highest likelihood of being non-drinkers, while "retired, no formal education, homeowners" were less likely to engage in hazardous drinking.

Casitas B-cell lineage (CBL) syndrome is a rare RASopathy known to predispose to CBL-mutated juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) in childhood. Adulthood acute myeloid leukemia arising out of a genetic aberrancies consistent with prior CBL-mutated JMML has been twice previously described, but chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia has not. We present a case of progressive myeloproliferative neoplasm in adulthood in the context of CBL syndrome alongside a novel CSF3R variant.

Alcohol misuse - defined as consuming more than 14 units of alcohol per week - is a well-established problem among veterans. This study investigated the change in quality of life among help-seeking UK veterans who completed a 28-day brief alcohol intervention delivered via a digital smartphone application (called DrinksRation) and have previously sought clinical help for a mental health disorder. This study was a secondary outcome analysis of data collected during a randomised control trial.

Introduction: Minority ethnic groups are more likely to experience poor mental health but less likely to seek formal support. Mental health problems and alcohol use (including non-drinking) co-occur, the reasons for this among minority ethnic groups are not well understood. This study explored i) alcohol use among minority ethnic individuals with a mental health problem,ii) how alcohol was used before individuals received support for their mental health, iii) how alcohol changed whilst and after individuals received treatment for their mental health.

Sodium all-solid-state batteries may become a novel storage technology overcoming the safety and energy density issues of (liquid-based) sodium ion batteries at low cost and good resource availability. However, compared to liquid electrolyte cells, contact issues and capacity losses due to interface reactions leading to high cell resistance are still a problem in solid-state batteries. In particular, sulfide-based electrolytes, which show very high ionic conductivity and good malleability, exhibit degradation reactions at the interface with electrode materials and carbon additives.

Introduction: Individuals with a severe mental illness (SMI) are more likely to drink at harmful levels or abstain. While it is known that drinking patterns change over time, the reasons for this among those with a SMI are unclear. This study aimed to (i) explore the experiences with alcohol, particularly in relation to mental health symptoms, and (ii) how drinking patterns have changed over time, among individuals who have a SMI diagnosis, who either currently drink alcohol or no longer drink.

Background: Applying the knowledge gained through implementation science can support the uptake of research evidence into practice; however, those doing and supporting implementation (implementation practitioners) may face barriers to applying implementation science in their work. One strategy to enhance individuals' and teams' ability to apply implementation science in practice is through training and professional development opportunities (capacity-building initiatives). Although there is an increasing demand for and offerings of implementation practice capacity-building initiatives, there is no universal agreement on what content should be included.

Survival from in-hospital cardiac arrest is approximately 18%, but for patients who require advanced airway management survival is lower. Those who do survive are often left with significant disability. Traditionally, resuscitation of cardiac arrest patients has included tracheal intubation, however insertion of a supraglottic airway has gained popularity as an alternative approach to advanced airway management.

The ionosphere, Earth's space environment, exhibits widespread turbulent structuring, or plasma irregularities, visualized by the auroral displays seen in Earth's polar regions. Such plasma irregularities have been studied for decades, but plasma turbulence remains an elusive phenomenon. We combine scale-dependent measurements from a ground-based radar with satellite observations to characterize small-scale irregularities simultaneously in the bottomside and topside ionosphere and perform a statistical analysis on an aggregate from both instruments over time.

The external ear develops from an organized convergence of ventrally migrating neural crest cells into the first and second branchial arches. Defects in external ear position are often symptomatic of complex syndromes such as Apert, Treacher-Collins, and Crouzon Syndrome. The low set ears (Lse) spontaneous mouse mutant is characterized by the dominant inheritance of a ventrally shifted external ear position and an abnormal external auditory meatus (EAM).
