Traditional etherification methods, although staples in synthetic chemistry, often fall short in the efficient construction of sterically hindered dialkyl ethers, especially under mild and practical conditions. Recent advances have attempted to address these limitations, typically relying on transition metal catalysts, external reductants, or harsh reaction conditions. In this work, we disclose a novel electrochemical approach that enables the synthesis of sterically hindered ethers from economically relevant and readily accessible alcohols without the need for sacrificial oxidants.

The simplicity of this method also led us to develop the first flow electrochemical preparation of carbamoyl fluorides, demonstrating scale-up feasibility as a proof of concept.

Nef-dependent downmodulation of MHC-I can be reversed by subnanomolar concentrations of concanamycin A (), a well-known inhibitor of vacuolar ATPase, at concentrations below those that interfere with lysosomal acidification or degradation. We conducted a structure-activity relationship study that assessed 76 compounds for Nef inhibition, 24 and 72 h viability, and lysosomal neutralization in Nef-expressing primary T cells.

Several surveys and campaigns have emerged highlighting the existence of a problem. However, the true scale is difficult to ascertain.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHydrogenation reactions are staple transformations commonly used across scientific fields to synthesise pharmaceuticals, natural products, and various functional materials. However, the vast majority of these reactions require the use of a toxic and costly catalyst leading to unpractical, hazardous and often functionally limited conditions. Herein, we report a new, general, practical, efficient, mild and high-yielding hydrogen-free electrochemical method for the reduction of alkene, alkyne, nitro and azido groups.

Methods: The stability of oxytocin (Study 1) and oxytocinase activity (Study 2) in late-stage pregnancy blood was quantified using liquid-chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and a fluorogenic assay, respectively. Analyses were conducted using blood from pregnant women (>36 weeks gestation) evaluated in lithium heparin (LH), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and BD P100 blood collection tubes with or without protease inhibitors.
Background: The bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has immunomodulatory "off-target" effects that have been hypothesized to protect against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Methods: In this international, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we randomly assigned health care workers to receive the BCG-Denmark vaccine or saline placebo and followed them for 12 months. Symptomatic Covid-19 and severe Covid-19, the primary outcomes, were assessed at 6 months; the primary analyses involved the modified intention-to-treat population, which was restricted to participants with a negative test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 at baseline.
A cheap, conventional, sealed heating reactor proved to be a useful alternative to a microwave reactor in the synthesis of a >20-member MIDA boronate library (MIDA = N-methyliminodiacetic acid). Reaction times were 10 min and work-ups were minimal, saving on energy and solvent usage.

There is a lack of conclusive evidence to support dental teams in identifying patients at risk and their management to prevent an adrenal crisis.Aim To review the current practice in UK dental teaching hospitals regarding the management of patients at risk of adrenal crisis in the dental setting.

Herein, we report the core functionalisation of N,N'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,6-dibromo-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid (Br -NDI) by using Suzuki, Sonogashira and Buchwald-Hartwig coupling reactions. The products of these reactions are important building blocks in many areas of organic electronics including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic cells (OPVCs).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer in dogs and humans, with significant numbers of patients experiencing treatment failure and disease progression. In our search for new approaches to treat osteosarcoma, we previously detected multiple chaperone proteins in the surface-exposed proteome of canine osteosarcoma cells. In the present study, we characterized expression of representative chaperones and find evidence for stress adaptation in canine osteosarcoma cells relative to osteogenic progenitors from normal bone.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLigands of the tumor necrosis factor superfamily (TNFSF) are appealing targets for immunotherapy research due to their integral involvement in stimulation or restriction of immune responses. TNFSF-targeted therapies are currently being developed to combat immunologically based diseases and cancer. A crucial determinant of effective TNFSF receptor binding and signaling is the trimeric quaternary structure of the ligand.

As a readily available, inexpensive intervention that has a well-established safety profile, BCG is a good candidate for protecting healthcare workers (HCWs) and other vulnerable groups against COVID-19.

This work explores the preparation of a tripotassium silver bisperiodate complex as a tetrahydrate via chemical oxidation of the central silver atom and orthoperiodate chelation. The isolation of the chelate complex in high yield and purity was achieved via acidimetric titration.

Material & Methods: Clinical staff within the Oral Surgery department recorded their oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate prior to donning an FFP3 mask, prior to doffing FFP3 mask and after doffing FFP3 mask using a finger pulse oximeter for a two-week period in May-June 2020.
Introduction Dental implants are a popular option for replacing missing teeth. When searching for information regarding dental implants, patients may first look to their dental practice website. The aim of this study was to assess the variance of patient information provided regarding implant complications on dental implant practice websites.

In Study 1, we experimentally examined the incidental effects of alcohol mention in news articles about accidents and crime and found evidence that messages mentioning alcohol as a causal factor in the accident or crime can activate empathic and emotional responses, which in turn increase support for alcohol control policy. In Study 2, anti-drinking and driving public service announcements (PSAs) were edited to either portray consequences of drinking and driving for the driver only or for both the driver and innocent others.

Scholars have long investigated fear appeals as a way to improve persuasive messages, yet we still lack understanding regarding the role of cultural orientation in relation to fear appeals. In the current study, we investigate how individual self-construal influences responses to culturally reflected fear appeals in the context of smoking cessation. Using a 2 (reference type: self-reference versus other-reference) x 2 (smoking cessation program: individual program versus group program) experimental design, this study found that self-construal moderates the effects of reference type on perceived threat and perceived threat to freedom.
