Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Understanding and detecting risk factors are crucial for early diagnosis and prevention strategies. Obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance, among others, have been described as modifiable risk factors.

The striatum is innervated by histaminergic fibers and expresses a high density of histamine H receptors (HRs), present on medium spiny neurons (MSNs) and corticostriatal afferents. In this study, in sagittal slices from the rat dorsal striatum, excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were recorded in MSNs after electrical stimulation of corticostriatal axons. The effect of HR activation and blockers of calcium and potassium channels was evaluated with the paired-pulse facilitation protocol.

Potassium channels play an important role in modulating synaptic activity both at presynaptic and postsynaptic levels. We have shown before that presynaptically located K and K channels modulate the strength of corticostriatal synapses in rat brain, but the role of other types of potassium channels at these synapses remains largely unknown. Here, we show that calcium-dependent potassium channels BK-type but not SK-type channels are located presynaptically in corticostriatal synapses.

Polymorphisms in the LEP (G-2548A and A19G), LEPR (A326G, A668G and G3057A) and RETN (C-420G and G+62A) genes were documented according to their association with alterations in biochemical parameters such as glucose, insulin and lipid profiles, along with serum leptin and resistin concentrations. The aim of the study was to establish any contribution of the G-2548A and A19G polymorphisms of the LEP gene, the A326G, A668G and G3057A polymorphisms of the LEPR gene, and the C-420G and G+62A polymorphisms of the RETN gene to serum leptin and resistin levels in Mexican young adults. Clinical and biochemical variables, serum leptin and resistin levels, and genotype profiles were analysed in 66 Mexican young adults.

Introduction: Obesity is a serious public health problem because its association with the risk to develop various chronic diseases. Atherogenic dyslipidemia that often accompany obesity is also associated to the metabolic syndrome and to cardiovascular diseases. The transition from adolescence to young adulthood appears to be a period where major changes occur in the lifestyle which contributes to the development of obesity, however, little attention has been given to this transition stage.

A preliminary investigation into electrodiagnostic methods in healthy children and in children with the Guillain-Barré syndrome (polyradiculoneuritis) was carried out in order to assess the validity of these procedures in the management of the disease. Studies of the strength-duration curves, the rheobase, the chronaxyie, the accommodation index curves, motor nerve conduction and electromyography were made in 30 healthy children and in 15 children suffering from polyradiculoneuritis. The strength-duration curves plotted on the rectus femoris muscles of the 15 sick children showed a steeply rising hyperbola and no response was elicited at the shorter pulse durations (less than 0.
