Aversive agents: Think twice. A case report on disulfiram-induced mania.

We present a case of disulfiram-induced mania in a patient with both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and psychostimulant use disorder (PUD), without a history of psychosis or mania. This acute presentation may be linked to the increased dopamine levels caused by disulfiram metabolism. Our patient developed manic symptoms 10 days after starting disulfiram, prescribed to treat the AUD.

Bioengineering potato plants to produce benzylglucosinolate for improved broad-spectrum pest and disease resistance.

In traditional, small-scale agriculture in the Andes, potatoes are frequently co-cultivated with the Andean edible tuber Tropaeolum tuberosum, commonly known as mashua, which is believed to exert a pest and disease protective role due to its content of the phenylalanine-derived benzylglucosinolate (BGLS). We bioengineered the production of BGLS in potato by consecutive generation of stable transgenic events with two polycistronic constructs encoding for expression of six BGLS biosynthetic genes from Arabidopsis thaliana. First, we integrated a polycistronic construct coding for the last three genes of the pathway (SUR1, UGT74B1 and SOT16) into potato driven by the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter.

Implementation of a mobile team to provide normothermic regional perfusion in controlled donation after circulatory death: Pilot study and first results.

Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) in controlled donation after circulatory death is becoming a popular method due to the favorable results of the grafts procured under this technique. This procedure requires experience, and, sometimes, the availability of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines to implement NRP is limited to tertiary hospitals. In order to provide support with NRP in controlled donation after circulatory death across the different hospitals of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, a mobile NRP team was created.

Lifesaving Electroconvulsive Therapy for a Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Severe Self-Injurious Behavior, and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.

We present a case of a preteen with autism spectrum disorder and severe self-injurious behavior who developed neuroleptic malignant syndrome on antipsychotics and required urgent electroconvulsive therapy and continued maintenance electroconvulsive therapy for ongoing clinical stability.

Mechanisms underlying the enhanced biomass and abiotic stress tolerance phenotype of an Arabidopsis MIOX over-expresser.

-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) is the first enzyme in the inositol route to ascorbate (L-ascorbic acid, AsA, vitamin C). We have previously shown that Arabidopsis plants constitutively expressing have elevated foliar AsA content and displayed enhanced growth rate, biomass accumulation, and increased tolerance to multiple abiotic stresses. In this work, we used a combination of transcriptomics, chromatography, microscopy, and physiological measurements to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms mediating the phenotype of the MIOX4 line.

Evaluation of occult hepatitis B infection in tissue donors: a multicenter analysis in Spain.

Traditionally, when antibody to the Hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and antibody to the Hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) are positive, the donor is considered suitable. However, the literature contains cases with this profile and circulating hepatitis B virus DNA. The aim of the study is to analyze the incidence of occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI).

Bacterial contamination rate and associated factors during bone and tendon allograft procurement from Spanish donors: exploring the contamination patterns.

Background: Allograft contamination during extraction represents a major limiting factor for tissue bank availability. Contamination rates remain persistently high independent of the hospital, country or year considered.

Aim: To analyse the factors associated with contamination of bone and tendon samples extracted from Spanish donors.

[Application of the Smoking Scale for Primary Care (ETAP) in clinical practice].

Objective: To determine if the ETAP smoking scale, which measures accumulated exposure to tobacco, both actively and passively, is applicable and effective in the clinical practice of Primary Care for the prevention of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Location Barranco Grande Health Centre in Tenerife, Spain.

Design: A study of 61 cases (AMI) and 144 controls.

The Calculating Boluses on Multiple Daily Injections (CBMDI) study: A randomized controlled trial on the effect on metabolic control of adding a bolus calculator to multiple daily injections in people with type 1 diabetes.

Background: Although the insulin bolus calculator is increasingly being used by people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on multiple daily injection (MDI) therapy, few studies have investigated its effects on glycemic control. The aim of this study was to determine whether adding this device to therapeutic intensification could further improve metabolic control.

Methods: A 4-month randomized controlled clinical trial was performed comparing subjects undergoing therapeutic intensification and either using the bolus calculator (Cb group) or not (active control [Co] group).

Volatile composition of Jasonia glutinosa D. C.

Using GC-MS the volatile composition of Jasonia glutinosa D. C., was studied by comparing two different methods for the isolation of a volatile fraction: distillation from the fresh plant in order to obtain the essential oil, and direct thermal desorption (DTD).

Sesquiterpene lactones from Inula montana L.

Aerial parts of Inula montana were investigated for its sesquiterpenoid composition. Five sesquiterpene lactones, isoinuviscolide, gaillardin, 1beta-hydroxy-3beta-acetoxy-eudesm-4(15), 11(13)-dien-12-8beta-olide, pulchellin-C and pulchellin-E were identified for the first time in this plant. One of them, 1beta-hydroxy-3beta-acetoxy-eudesm-4(15),11(13)-dien-1 2-8beta-olide, is a novel natural product.

[Epidemiologic study of a whooping cough outbreak in Rincón Grande, Veracruz].

An outbreak of whooping cough occurred in February 1988 in the town of Rincon Grande, borough of Santa Ana Atzacan, Veracruz. The objectives of this study were: to corroborate the presence of infection by Bordetella pertussis, to survey the immunizational status against this organism in this population, to identify the etiologic agent involved and the main epidemiologic characteristics of the outbreak. A descriptive study of the cases with the known population as well as a study of the cases and controls to identify the risk factors associated with illness were performed.
