Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in pediatric patients with vascular malformations (VaM) remains challenging to measure due to an absence of disease-specific tools and limited correlation with clinical measures. In this cross-sectional study of 50 children with VaM we evaluated self and parental-reported physical and psychosocial HRQoL using the PedsQL tool and analyzed scores according to type of VaM and age categories. We found HRQoL is considerably decreased in children with VaM and perceived similarly by patients and their parents, except for those with simple VaM and ages 13-18 years, who scored physical domains better than their parents.

Acute electrical stimulation of the common peroneal nerve (cPNS) has been shown to cause an immediate reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) in spontaneous hypertense rats (SHR), but the effect of this treatment in sub-chronic ambulatory SBP is unknown. Here we developed an implantable wireless WNClip neural stimulator to test the efficacy of 5-week cPNS as a treatment for hypertension. Daily cPNS 2 Hz monophasic stimulation at threshold for 8 minutes every day for five weeks, reduced SBP in WKY animals by -4 mm Hg, and in SHR animals by -21 mmHg in week 5 (p < 0.

Patellofemoral or anterior knee pain is a common cause of medical evaluation around the globe. It affects one in four individuals and is more frequent in females. It is considered a multifactorial disease in which conservative management must focus on the alterations found in the physical exam and radiologic images.

Article Synopsis
  • Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is common among young, active individuals, and this study aimed to investigate how muscle strength in the lower extremities changes after aerobic exercise in those with PFP compared to healthy individuals.
  • The research involved 17 people with PFP and 17 without, who completed strength tests and functional questionnaires before and after 10 minutes of treadmill exercise.
  • Results showed that those with PFP had significantly lower strength in hip abductors and knee extensors and performed worse on the Single-Leg Triple-Hop test after exercise, indicating impaired muscle function linked to their condition.

Studies involving the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) planning scale typically use only the subtest and scale scores without assessing the strategies employed by the participants. This study addressed this gap and examined the planning strategies used by children in the CAS2: Spanish version and their relationship with planning performance. We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study with 26 Puerto Rican children aged 8 to 11.

Purpose: Natural killer (NK) cells are traditionally identified by flow cytometry using a combination of markers (CD16/CD56/CD3), because a specific NK-cell marker is still missing. Here we investigated the utility of CD314, CD335 and NKp80, compared to CD16/CD56/CD3, for more robust identification of NK-cells in human blood, for diagnostic purposes.

Methods: A total of 156 peripheral blood (PB) samples collected from healthy donors (HD) and patients with diseases frequently associated with loss/downregulation of classical NK-cell markers were immunophenotyped following EuroFlow protocols, aimed at comparing the staining profile of total blood NK-cells for CD314, CD335 and NKp80, and the performance of distinct marker combinations for their accurate identification.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent fatal neoplasias worldwide. Despite efforts to improve the early diagnosis of CRC, the mortality rate of patients is still nearly 50%. The primary treatment strategy for CRC is surgery, which may be accompanied by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The fossil fish Agassiz, 1834, characterized by a highly distinctive grinding dentition and an estimated gigantic body size (up to around 10 m), has remained one of the most enigmatic extinct elasmobranchs (i.e. sharks, skates and rays) for nearly two centuries.

The left atrial appendage aneurysm is an uncommon condition that has garnered attention from the medical community due to its low incidence and varied clinical manifestations. The difficulty in identification is reflected in its incidental detection in imaging studies such as echocardiograms and tomographies, while symptoms range from mild to severe, including heart failure and thromboembolic events. The complex etiology includes congenital and acquired factors, and its management focuses on preventing complications through surgical resection, accompanied by medical strategies such as controlling heart rhythm and anticoagulation.

Bioelectronic Medicine stands as an emerging field that rapidly evolves and offers distinctive clinical benefits, alongside unique challenges. It consists of the modulation of the nervous system by precise delivery of electrical current for the treatment of clinical conditions, such as post-stroke movement recovery or drug-resistant disorders. The unquestionable clinical impact of Bioelectronic Medicine is underscored by the successful translation to humans in the last decades, and the long list of preclinical studies.

Objective: To describe the recent trends in Parkinson's disease mortality in Mexico during 2000-2020.

Method: The adjusted mortality rate per 100,000 inhabitants was calculated using the direct method and the world standard population. Trend analysis was performed with the Joinpoint software.

The low multiplication and ex vitro survival rates during acclimatization in the culture house limit the in vitro mass propagation of B. vulgaris. Several scientific studies have described the development of different protocols for bamboo; however, not all of them address the effects of these systems on plant morphology, physiology, and biochemistry in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • Ecuador experienced significant COVID-19 mortality in 2020, despite early implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), highlighting challenges in high-mobility informal labor settings.
  • A study analyzed respiratory samples from 1950 patients during the pandemic, finding correlations between lower NPI stringency and increased detection of multiple respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2.
  • Phylogenomic analyses showed numerous independent introductions of SARS-CoV-2 in early 2020, with NPIs negatively correlating with the variety of circulating virus strains, emphasizing the importance of effective interventions in controlling outbreaks, particularly in resource-limited contexts.

Wearable devices are starting to gain popularity, which means that a large portion of the population is starting to acquire these products. This kind of technology comes with a lot of advantages, as it simplifies different tasks people do daily. However, as they recollect sensitive data, they are starting to be targets for cybercriminals.

The biomechanics of peripheral nerves are determined by the blood-nerve barrier (BNB), together with the epineural barrier, extracellular matrix, and axonal composition, which maintain structural and functional stability. These elements are often ignored in the fabrication of penetrating devices, and the implant process is traumatic due to the mechanical distress, compromising the function of neuroprosthesis for sensory-motor restoration in amputees. Miniaturization of penetrating interfaces offers the unique opportunity of decoding individual nerve fibers associated to specific functions, however, a main issue for their implant is the lack of high-precision standardization of insertion forces.

Background: The gold standard for patients with carotid body tumors (CBT) is surgical resection; nevertheless, some patients are unfit for surgery or, for other reasons, could not be operated on. Active surveillance has been known to be a reasonable strategy for these cases. This study aimed to evaluate tumor growth in unoperated patients with CBTs.

Objective: There is no definitive consensus on the impact of preoperative embolization on carotid body tumor (CBT) treatment. The objective of this study was to compare surgical outcomes of patients who underwent preoperative embolization before CBT resection vs patients who underwent resection alone.

Methods: The CAPACITY registry included 1432 patients with CBT from 11 medical centers in four different countries.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest tumours worldwide, and its poor prognosis is due to an inability to detect the disease at the early stages, thereby creating an urgent need to develop non-invasive biomarkers. P-element-induced wimpy testis (PIWI) proteins work together with piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) to perform epigenetic regulation and as such hold great potential as biomarkers for pancreatic cancer. PIWIL2 and PIWIL4 are associated with better prognosis, while PIWIL1 and PIWIL3 involvement appears to be associated with carcinogenesis.
