Objective: To evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on the outcomes of patients with chronic refractory osteomyelitis (CRO) when combined with modern antibiotics with modern delivery methods and/or surgical treatments.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective review on 58 patients with CRO from a single institution who underwent HBO therapy along with standard treatment between January 2009 and December 2019. To investigate associations with binary outcomes of interest, they estimated logistic regression models.

Background: Cows that develop metritis experience dysbiosis of their uterine microbiome, where opportunistic pathogens overtake uterine commensals. An effective immune response is critical for maintaining uterine health. Nonetheless, periparturient cows experience immune dysregulation, which seems to be intensified by prepartum over-condition.

Progress towards the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem in four counties of Eastern Equatoria State, Republic of South Sudan.

Background: Trachoma is targeted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for elimination as a public health problem by 2030. Trachoma impact surveys using standardised methodology are recommended to monitor progress towards elimination and to determine eligibility for continued surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement (SAFE) interventions. From 2007 to 2015, four counties of Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan, received three to five rounds of mass drug administration with antibiotics.

Preferential Genetic Pathways Lead to Relapses in Adult B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Adult B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is characterized by genetic heterogeneity and a high relapse rate, affecting over 40% of adults. However, the mechanisms leading to relapse in adults are poorly understood. Forty-four adult B-ALL patients were studied at both diagnosis and relapse by next-generation sequencing (NGS).

A Cost Analysis of Opioid/Acetaminophen Therapy Versus a Multidrug, Opioid-Free Multimodal Postoperative Pain Control Regimen.

Opioids are often part of the post-operative pain regimen after orthopaedic surgery. Novel multimodal post-operative pain control regimens have been developed to decrease the amount of opioid usage due to their negative side effects including nausea, constipation, and addiction. The purpose of this study was to compare the cost of postoperative pain management treatment methods after orthopaedic surgery between opioid/acetaminophen therapy and an opioid-free, multidrug, multimodal pathway.

Correlates of Trachoma Recrudescence: Results from 51 District-Level Trachoma Surveillance Surveys in Amhara, Ethiopia.

Trachoma recrudescence is a serious concern for trachoma control programs. Programs define recrudescence as the return of trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) prevalence above elimination threshold (≥5%) on district-level trachoma surveillance surveys (TSSs). This study aimed to determine potential correlates of trachoma recrudescence within a historically highly endemic region.

Genetics and Genomics of Gastroschisis, Elucidating a Potential Genetic Etiology for the Most Common Abdominal Defect: A Systematic Review.

(1) Background: The exact etiology for gastroschisis, the most common abdominal defect, is yet to be known, despite the rising prevalence of this condition. The leading theory suggests an increased familial risk, indicating a possible genetic component possibly in the context of environmental risk factors. This systematic review aims to summarize the studies focused on the identification of a potential genetic etiology for gastroschisis to elucidate the status of the field.

A Biologic and Physical Characterization of an Injectable Amniotic Membrane Designed for Treating Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Introduction: Globally, the health and quality of life of millions of people are negatively affected by diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). To treat these chronic wounds, a novel injectable drug for closing DFUs composed of micronized amniotic membrane was developed. This new therapeutic drug for wound repair expands on traditional allograft therapies by allowing extracellular matrix proteins, growth factors, and cytokines to reach wound anatomies in DFUs that are difficult to treat.

Reproductive decision-making experiences of Australian adults with neurofibromatosis type 1 and schwannomatosis.

Individuals with neurofibromatosis type 1 and schwannomatosis (NF) often face difficult reproductive choices when family planning; however, their experiences and the barriers and enablers to reproductive decision-making are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to explore the opinions and experiences of individuals with NF in Australia and inform the development of practice recommendations and resources. Focus groups with adults with NF were conducted using a semi-structured interview schedule developed by the research team.

Targeted reproductive management for lactating Holstein cows: Economic return.

Targeted reproductive management (TRM), employing automated monitoring devices (AMD), is as an alternative to the blanket adoption of ovulation synchronization protocols (OvSP) for first postpartum AI and a means of reducing the use of OvSP for re-insemination of nonpregnant cows. We hypothesized that a TRM that relies heavily on AI of cows on AMD-detected estrus improves reproductive performance and economic return. Early-postpartum estrus characteristics (EPEC) of multiparous (n = 941) cows were evaluated at 40 and 41 DIM (herds 1 and 2, respectively) and EPEC of primiparous (n = 539) cows were evaluated at 54 and 55 DIM (herds 1 and 2, respectively).

KIF11 Variants Associated With Novel Renal System Involvement-Two Cases That Expand the Phenotypic Spectrum of Microcephaly With or Without Chorioretinopathy, Lymphedema, or Impaired Intellectual Development.

Pathogenic variants in KIF11 are linked to microcephaly with or without chorioretinopathy, lymphedema, or impaired intellectual development (MCLMR). To our knowledge, renal phenotypes have not been described in the literature in association with KIF11-related disorders. This study is a case report of two probands with heterozygous pathogenic variants in KIF11 who presented with the common clinical features of MCLMR but also had additional renal involvement not previously reported as associated phenotypes of MCLMR, elucidating phenotypic expansion of this syndrome.

Cancer genetic counseling via telegenetics and telephone: A qualitative study exploring the experience of patients and genetic counselors in an Australian cancer genetics context.

The demand for direct-to-patient (DTP) telegenetics (genetics services delivered via videoconferencing) in genetic counseling practice has rapidly increased, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent telegenetics literature is mostly quantitative and not in the Australian context. A qualitative interview study was conducted to address this gap.

Mobile application: digital health card for deaf adolescents.

Objective: To develop a mobile health application (mHealth) accessible to deaf adolescents, based on their health card, promoting autonomy to the access to the user's health information.

Method: This was a methodological study, divided into three stages: a questionnaire to understand the knowledge of deaf adolescents about the health card, and development of the application using videos in Brazilian Sign Language Libras, Android Studio platform with Java language, and evaluation of the application.

Results: Most deaf adolescents were not aware of the health card.

Regulation of synapse density by Pumilio RNA-binding proteins.

The formation, stabilization, and elimination of synapses are tightly regulated during neural development and into adulthood. Pumilio RNA-binding proteins regulate the translation and localization of many synaptic mRNAs and are developmentally downregulated in the brain. We found that simultaneous downregulation of Pumilio 1 and 2 increases both excitatory and inhibitory synapse density in primary hippocampal neurons and promotes synapse maturation.

Outcomes After Percutaneous Zadek Osteotomy for Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy.

Background: Surgical treatment of insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) historically consists of Achilles tendon debridement with reattachment and excision of the posterosuperior calcaneal prominence with or without a gastrocnemius recession. Zadek osteotomy (ZO) is an alternative to an open midline splitting approach. The purpose of this study was to analyze patient-reported outcomes and complications after percutaneously performed ZO with minimum 2 years' follow-up.

Allostery at a Protein-Protein Interface Harboring an Intermolecular Motional Network.

Motional properties of proteins govern recognition, catalysis, and regulation. The dynamics of tightly interacting residues can form intramolecular dynamic networks, dependencies fine-tuned by evolution to optimize a plethora of functional aspects. The constructive interaction of residues from different proteins to assemble intermolecular dynamic networks is a similarly likely case but has escaped thorough experimental assessment due to interfering association/dissociation dynamics.

Sexually dimorphic DNA methylation and gene expression patterns in human first trimester placenta.

Background: Fetal sex and placental development impact pregnancy outcomes and fetal-maternal health, but the critical timepoint of placenta establishment in first trimester is understudied in human pregnancies.

Methods: Pregnant subjects were recruited in late first trimester (weeks 10-14) at time of chorionic villus sampling, a prenatal diagnostic test. Leftover placenta tissue was collected and stored until birth outcomes were known, then DNA and RNA were isolated from singleton, normal karyotype pregnancies resulting in live births.

Purpose: This study aims to minimize monitor units (MUs) of intensity-modulated treatments in the Monaco treatment planning system while preserving plan quality by optimizing the "Minimum Segment Width" (MSW) and "Fluence Smoothing" parameters.
