1. In the isolated spinal cord and brainstem of the frog, stimulation of the brainstem (BS) with trains of 3-4 pulses at 60-400 Hz produced dorsal root potentials (DRPs). The lowest threshold sites eliciting DRPs were located at the level of the obex up to about 2.

Twenty-two infants with moderate dehydration due to diarrhea in whom oral rehydration therapy (ORT) was contraindicated or who failed to respond to this method of therapy were treated with rapid intravenous rehydration (RIR). Clinical signs of dehydration without shock allowed us to estimate 5% to 10% of weight loss. Patients were 11 days to 19 months old, and 9 of them were undernourished.

Prostaglandins GE2 produces on the gallbladder a rise in intraluminal pressure, an increase in in intraluminal secretion, improves gallbladder contraction and decreases its absorption capacity. In this study, patients who received indomethacin twice a day by rectum, showed a significant reduction in volume and area of gallbladder after 24 and 48 hours (P < 0.05).

Cerebrovascular diseases with neurological deficits can be supposed to be a risk factor for oral health problems. 29 patients who were admitted consecutively to the Hospital of Enköping, Sweden, due to an acute history of stroke, were followed up with regard to their oral health at two weeks and at three months after admission. Only four patients had signs of a bad oral health, and three of them had dentures.

The antigenic concentrations of protein C, total protein S (TPS), free protein S (FPS) percentage of protein S that corresponds to the free form (PFPS), C4BP and factor II throughout childhood (values in cord blood, at 48 hours, at 15 days, 1-6 months, 6 months-2 years, 2-7 years and 7-14 years) have been studied. The maturation of these factors is variable, reaching average values similar to those of adults at between 1 to 6 months for protein C and TPS; at 15 days for factor II; and at between 6 months and 2 years for C4BP, whose development occurs latest. Vitamin K increases the values of protein C, factor II and FPS at 48 hours after birth, but does not modify the figures for TPS or C4BP.

Relationships of reductive potential, kinetics of enzymatic reduction, augmented oxygen consumption, and cytotoxicity were determined for seven clinically relevant mitomycin antibiotics. Potentials for one-electron reduction were obtained by cyclic voltammetry analysis in dimethyl sulfoxide with 0.1 M tetraethyl-ammonium perchlorate.

One hundred cases of colorectal cancer resected at the University Hospital of Caracas are presented, with emphasis in the Pathological Findings (Anatomical location and staging included). Age and sex distribution are comparable to data presented in other local series; in contrast, the proportion of rectal cancer is below expectations (only 5% of all cancer of the large intestine). The majority of cases are diagnosed in advanced stages (predominantly Dukes stages B and C).

The values of pH, PCO2, PO2 and base excess were measured at the time of birth, from the umbilical artery, in a group of 19 normal newborn infants from vaginal deliveries and compared to 19 infants born by elective cesarean sections without labor. The value of pH was significantly lower (7.23 +/- 0.

The role of prolactin and of estradiol and progesterone in the control of the biosynthetic and secretory activity of TIDA neurons has been investigated in the following animal models: young female rats, aged female rats, and young male rats. The indices of TIDA neuronal function employed were a) mass of TH in neurites in the ME, b) total in situ activity of TH in the ME, c) in situ molar activity of TH in the ME, and d) secretion of dopamine into hypophysial portal blood. It was found that prolactin in high concentration in the circulation and in the CSF had little, if any, effect on the mass of TH in the ME.

The mechanism of uptake and efflux of porfiromycin (PFM) by HCT 116 human colon carcinoma cells or freshly obtained human RBC was investigated. The time course of uptake of radioactivity upon exposure of HCT 116 cells to [14C]PFM showed one fast and one slow phase of linear increase. The initial phase of PFM uptake was not saturable with external drug concentrations from 2 to 100 microM.

Intrauterine growth of 11,543 newborn infants, liveborn between 1978 to 1987 that met prospective selection conditions (without intrauterine growth retardation risk) and their data are reported. MBW and weight percentiles 10, 25, 50, 75, 90 from 26 throughout 42 week of gestational age are reported. Selection of cases was important in obtaining adequate percentiles of birth-weight vs gestational age.

The effects of thyroidectomy and thyroid hormone replacement on the mass and in situ molar activity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the median eminence (ME) and superior cervical ganglia (SCG) of male rats were investigated. The tissue specificity of these effects were evaluated by comparing the ME with the superior cervical ganglion (SCG). All animals were thyroparathyroidectomized (Tx) or sham Tx.

The hypotensive effect of enalapril, a converting enzyme inhibitor, given as a single agent once daily, was evaluated prospectively over a 16 week period in 20 subjects. One patient abandoned therapy and 2 were withdrawn (increased creatinine levels in one and the need for associated therapy in the other). Side effects developed in 3 patients: creatinine elevation, skin rush and a "salty taste", respectively.

In intact male rats the concentration of dopamine in hypophysial portal plasma of animals treated simultaneously with estradiol and progesterone was twice that of animals treated with the solvent vehicle. Treatment with estradiol or progesterone alone had no effect on dopamine in portal plasma. The rate of synthesis of dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), the precursor of dopamine, in tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TID) neurites in the median eminence (ME) was 15 +/- 1.

Relying on a biomechanical model of the lower limb which treats the leg-bicycle system as a five-bar linkage constrained to plane motion, a cost function derived from the joint moments developed during cycling is computed. At constant average power of 200 W, the effect of five variables on the cost function is studied. The five variables are pedalling rate, crank arm length, seat tube angle, seat height, and longitudinal foot position on the pedal.

A procedure is described that enables one to quantify the mass of TH in a fraction of the ME and SCG of rats. This procedure is specific and sensitive. It should be possible to study the biosynthetic activity of catecholaminergic neurons as a function of the mass of TH in such cells.

The roles of prolactin (PRL) and the ovarian hormones, estradiol and progesterone, in the control of tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic neurons of aged female rats were investigated. The in situ molar activity of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in neurites of these neurons was assayed by measuring the rate of accumulation of L-dihydroxyphenylalanine in the median eminence following the administration of a L-dihydroxiphenylalanine decarboxylase inhibitor. The TH mass was measured by an immunoblot assay using rat TH as the standard.
