Professional Benefits of a Web-based Journal Club for Critical Care Residents and Their Mentors.

To identify the perceptions and benefits of participation in a web-based journal club by the critical care pharmacy residents who presented and their mentors. Former and current resident presenters and their mentors were invited to complete one of three electronic surveys created to assess their perceptions of their experiences with a web-based journal club sponsored by the Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology (CPP) Section of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data gathered.

This study measured regional blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) changes using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in response to a spatial Simon/Stroop task in community-dwelling older adults (N = 20, 63-80y).

Circulation of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses in wild birds and poultry in the Netherlands, 2006-2016.

In this study, we explore the circulation of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses in wild birds and poultry in the Netherlands. Surveillance data collected between 2006 and 2016 was used to evaluate subtype diversity, spatiotemporal distribution and genetic relationships between wild bird and poultry viruses. We observed close species-dependent associations among hemagglutinin and neuraminidase subtypes.

Prevalence of Novel Candidate Sjögren Syndrome Autoantibodies in the Penn Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance Cohort.

Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of novel candidate autoantibodies associated with Sjögren syndrome (SS) and their ability to identify those with SS among participants with dry eye enrolled in the Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) study at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn).

Methods: All participants previously underwent a full ocular and systemic evaluation for possible SS as part of the SICCA study. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect IgG, IgA, and IgM autoantibodies to salivary protein 1 (SP-1), parotid secretory protein (PSP), and carbonic anhydrase 6 from previously banked baseline serum samples from SICCA study participants enrolled at Penn.

Effect of Corticosteroid-Sparing Treatment With Mycophenolate Mofetil vs Methotrexate on Inflammation in Patients With Uveitis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Methotrexate and mycophenolate mofetil are commonly used immunomodulatory therapies for achieving corticosteroid-sparing control of noninfectious uveitis, but there is uncertainty about which drug is more effective.

Objective: To compare the effect of methotrexate and mycophenolate for achieving corticosteroid-sparing control of noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, and panuveitis.

Design, Setting, And Participants: The First-line Antimetabolites as Steroid-sparing Treatment (FAST) uveitis trial screened 265 adults with noninfectious uveitis requiring corticosteroid-sparing immunosuppressive therapy from 9 referral eye centers in India, the United States, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico between August 22, 2013, and August 16, 2017.

Virus Shedding of Avian Influenza in Poultry: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Understanding virus shedding patterns of avian influenza virus (AIV) in poultry is important for understanding host-pathogen interactions and developing effective control strategies. Many AIV strains were studied in challenge experiments in poultry, but no study has combined data from those studies to identify general AIV shedding patterns. These systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to summarize qualitative and quantitative information on virus shedding levels and duration for different AIV strains in experimentally infected poultry species.

Feasibility of Performing Concurrent Coulometric Titrations Using a Multicompartment Electrolysis Cell.

Feasibility of performing multiple coulometric titrations in a single course of electrolysis is presented. In these titrations, three pairs of cathode and anode compartments were connected with a network of electrodes and salt bridges. Passage of current through the cell caused concurrent electrolysis in cathode and anode compartments.

Infantile Tumoral Calcinosis of the Cervical Spine: A Case Report.

Tumoral calcinosis (TC) is an exceedingly rare disease, significantly so when located in the spine. Here, we present a 4-month-old patient with decreased head control and range of motion of the neck for several weeks. CT and MRI demonstrated a calcified mass in the retropharyngeal area and surrounding C1/C2, and TC was suspected.

Background: A very limited amount of research has examined intermittent fasting (IF) programs, such as time-restricted feeding (TRF), in active populations.

Objective: Our objective was to examine the effects of TRF, with or without β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation, during resistance training (RT).

Methods: This study employed a randomized, placebo-controlled, reduced factorial design and was double-blind with respect to supplementation in TRF groups.

Unrestricted generation of pure two-qubit states and entanglement diagnosis by single-qubit tomography.

We present an experimental proof-of-principle for the generation and detection of pure two-qubit states that have been encoded in degrees of freedom that are common to both classical-light beams and single photons. Our protocol requires performing polarization tomography on a single qubit from a qubit pair. The degree of entanglement in the qubit pair is measured by concurrence, which can be directly extracted from intensity measurements-or photon counting-entering single-qubit polarization tomography.
