Background: Extensive research on the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus has improved our understanding of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Historically, however, the cerebellum's role in these stages of cognitive decline has been traditionally neglected due to its associations with motor function. Recent research has demonstrated cerebellar structural and connectivity differences in MCI and AD.

Background: Older females, particularly susceptible to Alzheimer's disease (AD), may be affected by hormonal fluctuation during life. We aim to investigate the relationship between changes in brain volume and sex steroid hormones over time. We hypothesize that levels of sex hormones (17ß-estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone) relate to changes in brain volume, especially in the hippocampus (HPC) and cerebellum (CB).

Background: Brain activation to motor commands is seen in 15% of clinically unresponsive patients with acute brain injury. This state called cognitive motor dissociation (CMD) is detectable by electroencephalogram (EEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging, predicts long-term recovery, and is recommended by recent guidelines to support prognostication. However, false negative CMD results are a particular concern, and occult aphasia in clinically unresponsive patients may be a major factor.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates how transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) can detect changes in blood flow that might indicate vasculitis in patients with neurocysticercosis (NCC), a condition that can lead to strokes.
  • - Out of 53 NCC patients, 12 (22.64%) showed hemodynamic changes linked to vasculitis, primarily affecting the middle cerebral artery, with a higher occurrence in females.
  • - The findings suggest that TCD is a valuable tool for identifying cerebral hemodynamic changes in NCC patients, highlighting the importance of monitoring for complications like vasculitis.

Background: In Peru, one-third of transgender women (TW) are estimated to be living with HIV. While TW are recognized as a priority population, their sexual partners are an at-risk hidden population with unmet needs for HIV services. We conducted a study examining the practices and preferences for HIV services among partners of transgender women (PTW), as compared to TW, to better understand the needs of PTW and inform HIV service delivery for them in Peru.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a significant cause of epilepsy globally, particularly in areas where it's endemic, with calcification being the most common finding in affected patients' neuroimaging.
  • A study involving 524 patients in Peru from 2012 to 2022 found that a majority had previous seizures, with specific patterns in seizure types and locations of calcifications predominantly in the frontal lobes.
  • Patients with a prior diagnosis of viable infection tended to have more severe symptoms, including longer seizure duration and a higher number of calcifications, compared to those diagnosed only after the parasites had calcified.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common helminthic infection of the human central nervous system. The antibody detection assay of choice is the enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot assay using lentil-lectin purified parasite antigens (LLGP-EITB, Western blot), an immunoassay with exceptional performance in clinical samples. However, its use is mainly restricted to a few research laboratories because the assay is labor-intensive and requires sophisticated equipment, expertise, and large amounts of parasite material for preparation of reagents.

In unconscious appearing patients with acute brain injury, wilful brain activation to motor commands without behavioural signs of command following, known as cognitive motor dissociation (CMD), is associated with functional recovery. CMD can be detected by applying machine learning to EEG recorded during motor command presentation in behaviourally unresponsive patients. Identifying patients with CMD carries clinical implications for patient interactions, communication with families, and guidance of therapeutic decisions but underlying mechanisms of CMD remain unknown.

Following pro-market policies, the Peruvian state has aimed to regulate profitable fisheries and aquaculture activities in order to increase their production. However, informal and illegal activities not only persist but are also interlinked with formal practices and frameworks, creating intertwined realities in fostering processes of institutional hybridization. This article analyses the (re)production of informal and illegal activities by explaining the formation of hybrid institutional entanglements in the Peruvian anchoveta () fishery in Pisco and the Peruvian bay scallop () aquaculture industry in Sechura.

Patients with subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (NCC) are usually older than those with parenchymal disease. Whether this difference reflects a prolonged presymptomatic period or a delay in diagnosis is not clear. From 408 eligible patients, we retrospectively compared the age at symptom onset in 140 patients diagnosed with parenchymal (pure viable or pure calcified) and subarachnoid NCC who had a confirmatory image available not more than 2 years after the beginning of symptoms.

Background: An infodemic is excess information, including false or misleading information, that spreads in digital and physical environments during a public health emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an unprecedented global infodemic that has led to confusion about the benefits of medical and public health interventions, with substantial impact on risk-taking and health-seeking behaviors, eroding trust in health authorities and compromising the effectiveness of public health responses and policies. Standardized measures are needed to quantify the harmful impacts of the infodemic in a systematic and methodologically robust manner, as well as harmonizing highly divergent approaches currently explored for this purpose.

Background: Recovery trajectories of clinically unresponsive patients with acute brain injury are largely uncertain. Brain activation in the absence of a behavioural response to spoken motor commands can be detected by EEG, also known as cognitive-motor dissociation. We aimed to explore the role of cognitive-motor dissociation in predicting time to recovery in patients with acute brain injury.

The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis (NCC) is principally based on neuroimaging (magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography), instrumentation that is scarcely available in the rural regions where Taenia solium transmission, primarily occurs due to poor sanitation conditions. Immunological assays for antigen or antibody detection complement the neuroimaging approach. However, no field-applicable assays to diagnose viable NCC or to guide the referral of cases for neuroimaging or for appropriate management are available.

The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis (NCC) depends on neuroimaging and serological confirmation. While antibody detection by enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) fails to predict viable NCC, EITB banding patterns provide information about the host's infection course. Adding antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Ag-ELISA) results to EITB banding patterns may improve their ability to predict or rule out of viable NCC.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is endemic in many parts of the world, carrying significant neurological morbidity that varies according to whether lesions are located inside the cerebral parenchyma or in extraparenchymal spaces. The latter, in particular subarachnoid NCC, is assumed to be more severe, but no controlled studies comparing mortality between types of NCC exist. The aim of this study was to compare all-cause mortality between patients with intraparenchymal NCC and those with subarachnoid NCC.

Objective: Behaviorally unresponsive patients in intensive care units (ICU) are unable to consistently and effectively communicate their most fundamental physical needs. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology has been established in the clinical context, but faces challenges in the critical care environment. Contrary to cue-based BCIs, which allow activation only during pre-determined periods of time, self-paced BCI systems empower patients to interact with others at any time.
