Article Synopsis
  • Low-temperature stress is a major challenge for apple production, and galactinol acts as a key cryoprotectant.
  • Exogenous application of galactinol on apple saplings was shown to reduce damage from cold stress, and transgenic plants overexpressing the MdGolS5 gene exhibited increased cold tolerance.
  • The study highlights the potential of galactinol and its biosynthetic pathway in enhancing cold resistance in apples, providing insights for future genetic improvements.

Low-temperature stress significantly limits the growth, development, and geographical distribution of apple cultivation. Spermidine (Spd), a known plant growth regulator, plays a vital role in the plant's response to abiotic stress. Yet, the mechanisms by which exogenous Spd enhances cold resistance in apples remain poorly understood.

Melatonin (MT), an indoleamine compound, has a pleiotropic effect on plant growth and development and can regulate the quality of tree fruit. Systematic research on the effect of preharvest MT spraying on pear fruit quality and technical solutions for MT application to regulate pear fruit quality are still lacking. Thus, here we aimed to evaluate the effects of different spraying times, concentrations, and exogenous MT application times on 'Yuluxiang' pear fruit quality.

Hanfu apple is the main cultivar grown in the cool areas of Northeast, Northwest, and North China. Here, we proposed a chromosome-level Hanfu genome assembly using PacBio, Illumina and Hi-C sequencing data. The total contig length was 628.

The dormancy-associated MADS-box (DAM) genes PpDAM5 and PpDAM6 have been shown to play important roles in bud endodormancy; however, their molecular regulatory mechanism in peach is unclear. In this study, by use of yeast one-hybrid screening, we isolated a TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PROLIFERATING CELL FACTOR transcription factor, PpTCP20, in the peach cultivar 'Zhongyou 4' (Prunus persica var. nectarina).
