The abnormal fibrillation of human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) is associated with development of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) can bind amyloid proteins to inhibit the fibrillation of these proteins. However, the mechanic detail of EGCG inhibiting amyloid formation is still unclear at the molecular level.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how aluminum (Al(III)) affects the fibrillation of a protein linked to type II diabetes (hIAPP) and how the compound (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) interacts with both aluminum and hIAPP.
  • EGCG can inhibit normal fibrillation of hIAPP, potentially leading to less toxic aggregates, while Al(III) promotes its fibrillation.
  • The combination of Al(III) and EGCG was found to be more effective in inhibiting hIAPP fibrillation than EGCG alone, suggesting a potential pathway for drug development in treating type II diabetes.
