Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the structural and functional loss of neurons, which impacts populations worldwide. Enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE), beta-site APP cleaving enzyme-1 (BACE1), and glycogen synthase kinase 3-beta (GSK3β) are implicated in their progression. Therefore, developing compounds that inhibit these enzymes is relevant for treating these conditions.

Aim: The angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and its homolog, the angiotensin converting enzyme 1 (ACE), are involved in COVID-19 physiopathology. Alterations in the enzymatic structure, expression, and/or activity may influence the risk of infection and severity of disease. For this reason, we aimed to identify different allelic forms of ACE2 G8790A and ACE I/D polymorphisms in a Brazilian cohort and evaluate their impact on ACE and ACE2 activities and their association with COVID-19 susceptibility and severity.

to develop an optimization and training pipeline for a classification model based on principal component analysis and logistic regression using neuroimages from PET with 2-[F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG PET) for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD).as training data, 200 FDG PET neuroimages were used, 100 from the group of patients with AD and 100 from the group of cognitively normal subjects (CN), downloaded from the repository of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Regularization methods L1 and L2 were tested and their respective strength varied by the hyperparameter C.

Background: Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were conducted to identify the effectiveness of whole-body vibration (WBV) on strength, power, and muscular endurance in older adults. However, the results of different studies are contradictory.

Objective: To verify the impacts of the WBV on strength, power, and muscular endurance in older adults.

(1) Background: Metabolic syndrome (MSy) is defined by a constellation of interconnected physiological, biochemical, clinical, and metabolic factors that directly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effects of whole-body vibration exercise (WBVE) in metabolic syndrome (MSy) individuals. (2) Methods: An electronic search in Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PEDro, and CINAHL databases in December 2022 was performed.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects dopaminergic neurons in the mesencephalic substantia nigra, causing a progressive clinical course characterized by pre-motor, non-motor and motor symptoms, which negatively impact the quality of life of patients and cause high health care costs. Therefore, the present study aims to discuss the clinical manifestations of PD and to make a correlation with the gut-brain (GB) axis, approaching epidemiology and therapeutic perspectives, to better understand its clinical progression and identify symptoms early. A literature review was performed regarding the association between clinical progression, the gut-brain axis, epidemiology, and therapeutic perspectives, in addition to detailing pre-motor, non-motor symptoms (neuropsychiatric, cognitive, autonomic, sleep disorders, sensory abnormalities) and cardinal motor symptoms.

Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is a major cause of physical disability in the world. The origin of this condition can be due to differents causes, with a specific cause or of unknown mechanical origin, being characterized as unspecific. In this case a physical therapy treatment approach with manual therapy is relevant, which includes the muscle energy technique (MET) classified as a common conservative treatment for pathologies of the spine, mainly in LBP and disability.

Therapeutic strategies directed at the tumor surfaceome (TS), including checkpoint inhibitor blocking antibodies, antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), and chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells, provide a new armament to fight cancer. However, a remaining bottleneck is the lack of strategies to comprehensively interrogate patient tumors for potential TS targets. Here, we have developed a platform (tumor surfaceome mapping [TS-MAP]) integrated with a newly curated TS classifier (SURFME) that allows profiling of primary 3D cultures and intact patient glioma tumors with preserved tissue architecture.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first reported in late December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The etiological agent of this disease is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the high transmissibility of the virus led to its rapid global spread and a major pandemic (ongoing at the time of writing this review). The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 can vary widely from non-evident or minor symptoms to severe acute respiratory syndrome and multi-organ damage, causing death.

A multiclass analytical method to determine pesticides and mycotoxins in beer-related matrices based on the dilute and shoot approach was optimized and validated according to the European guidelines SANTE/12682/2019 and EC/401/2006. Extraction used acidified acetonitrile at 1% (v/v) acetic acid, followed by horizontal shaking homogenization, centrifugation, freeze-out step for cleanup, another centrifugation, and injection into a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system. Linearity, detection and quantification limits, accuracy, and measurement uncertainty were evaluated, and 201, 184, and 176 analytes were validated for malt, beer, and brewers' spent grain, respectively.

Background/objective: This study examined relationships between health-related physical fitness indicators and clustered cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents between 2014 and 2017.

Methods: The sample consisted of 93 students (60% girls), with complete data sets in both 2014 and 2017. The physical fitness components evaluated were: flexibility (s), muscular fitness ( and ), cardiorespiratory fitness (), and body fat (BMI).

is a tree known as "catuaba", widely distributed in Brazil. Studies carried out with barks suggest that plant has antidepressant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, and preventive against brain damage. The aim of this work was to isolate and characterise compounds from the semipurified fraction of barks, and to conduct microbiological screening against bacteria and fungi.

Purpose: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and lethal of primary malignant brain tumors. Hypoxia constitutes a major determining factor for the poor prognosis of high-grade glioma patients, and is known to contribute to the development of treatment resistance. Therefore, new strategies to comprehensively profile and monitor the hypoxic status of gliomas are of high clinical relevance.

Background: Coagulation activation is a hallmark of cancer, and anticoagulants have shown tumour-inhibiting properties. However, recent trials have failed to demonstrate improved survival with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) in cancer populations. This has raised the question of suboptimal adherence as a possible explanation for the lack of benefit.

Introduction: Ongoing controversy surrounds the role of atmospheric temperature in the incidence of intravaginal testicular torsion (iTT). This debate may be attributed to inadequate research methodology. As environmental risk factors have been successfully investigated with distributed lag non-linear model regression (DLNM), we applied this methodology to investigate the association between daily mean atmospheric temperatures (Tmean) and daily incidences of intravaginal testicular torsion (iTT) in our region.

Background/objectives: Flaxseed has functional properties in the reduction of the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Regardless of its high energy density, the consumption of flaxseed tends to promote body weight maintenance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate energy and macronutrient balance after flaxseed consumption.
