In Ascomycota, the master regulators of sex are MAT genes that lie in a single mating-type locus, in Sporothrix these are determined by two nonhomologous alleles, MAT1-1 and MAT1-2.

Primary Vestibular Schwannoma Cells Activate p21 and RAD51-Associated DNA Repair Following Radiation-Induced DNA Damage.

Hypothesis: Vestibular Schwannoma (VS) can avoid cell death following radiation injury by entering cell cycle arrest and activating RAD51-related DNA repair.

Background: Although the radiobiology of various cancers is well-studied, the radiobiological effects in VS are poorly understood. In this study, we describe how VS cells enter cell cycle arrest (through p21 expression), activate DNA repair (through RAD51 upregulation), and avoid cell death after radiation-induced double-stranded breaks (DSB) in DNA (as measured by γ-H2AX).

Background: National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs) currently make limited use of parasite genetic data. We have developed GenRe-Mekong, a platform for genetic surveillance of malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) that enables NMCPs to implement large-scale surveillance projects by integrating simple sample collection procedures in routine public health procedures.

Methods: Samples from symptomatic patients are processed by SpotMalaria, a high-throughput system that produces a comprehensive set of genotypes comprising several drug resistance markers, species markers and a genomic barcode.

NMR and luminescence experiments reveal the structure and symmetry adaptation of a europium ionic liquid to solvent polarity.

By combining NMR data (nuclear Overhauser effect and pseudocontact shifts) with luminescence measurements, we uncover how the structure of an anionic europium complex adapts to different solvent polarities as a result of the different relative proximities of the ion pairs. In nonpolar solvents, the detected contact ion pairs, CIPs, indicate that the ions remain in proximity, with the molecular cation, and then perturbing and distorting the coordination polyhedron of the anion complex to a low symmetry configuration, which promotes luminescence. Differently, solvent separated ion pairs occur in polar solvents, indicating that the molecular ions have been disconnected.

Understanding clinical leadership behaviors in practice to inform baccalaureate nursing curriculum: a comparative study between the United States and Australia novice nurses.

Objectives: While the nursing profession recognizes the importance of leadership behaviors, limited evidence exists on essential clinical leadership behaviors that nursing students should exhibit upon graduation. CLIMB-COVID: continuous integration supporting decentralised sequencing for SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance.

In response to the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the UK, the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) consortium was formed to rapidly sequence SARS-CoV-2 genomes as part of a national-scale genomic surveillance strategy. The network consists of universities, academic institutes, regional sequencing centres and the four UK Public Health Agencies. We describe the development and deployment of CLIMB-COVID, an encompassing digital infrastructure to address the challenge of collecting and integrating both genomic sequencing data and sample-associated metadata produced across the COG-UK network.

Rationale: Recent studies have revealed that the lung microbiota of critically ill patients is altered and predicts clinical outcomes. The incidence of invasive fungal infections, namely, invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), in immunocompromised patients is increasing, but the clinical significance of variations in lung bacterial communities is unknown.

Research to date has shown that altered neural activation to reward is associated with alcohol use in adolescence; however, few studies have focused on neural activation to loss and alcohol use.

Background: The proximal fascia lata (FL) graft construct used for arthroscopic superior capsule reconstruction (ASCR) is openly harvested, whereas the mid-thigh FL graft construct is minimally invasively harvested. The purpose of the current study was to compare the biomechanical properties of proximal thigh and mid-thigh-harvested FL graft constructs used for ASCR. The hypothesis was that, despite the different morphological characteristics of the proximal thigh and mid-thigh FL graft constructs used for ASCR, their biomechanical properties would not significantly differ.

Background: Triple antimalarial combination therapies combine potent and rapidly cleared artemisinins or related synthetic ozonides, such as arterolane, with two, more slowly eliminated partner drugs to reduce the risk of resistance. We aimed to assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of arterolane-piperaquine-mefloquine versus arterolane-piperaquine and artemether-lumefantrine for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Kenyan children.

Methods: In this single-centre, open-label, randomised, non-inferiority trial done in Kilifi County Hospital, Kilifi, coastal Kenya, children with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria were recruited.
