Although it is recognized that periodontal disease negatively impacts quality of life, there is no validated instrument to assess this impact in Brazil. This study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the OHIP 14 PD (Oral Health Impact Profile Applied to Periodontal Diseases) for application among Brazilian patients. The original instrument was translated and validated into Brazilian Portuguese in a cross-sectional study with 110 participants recruited from a Dental School clinic.

However, uncertainties, as in the proton range, patient geometry, and positioning pose challenges to the precise and secure delivery of the treatment plan (TP). In vivo range determination and dose distribution are pivotal for mitigation of uncertainties, opening the possibility to reduce uncertainty margins and for adaptation of the TP.

The success of this surgical intervention in these patients lies in a multidisciplinary approach, with anesthetic management playing a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of the procedure. Methods After approval by the local ethics committee, clinical data of 17 pediatric patients who underwent lung resection in our hospital from January 2012 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.

More recently, single-cell transcriptomics has enabled an increasingly fine genetically defined taxonomy of cortical cell types, but the link between the gene expression of individual cell types and their physiological and anatomical properties remains poorly understood. Here, we develop a hybrid modeling approach to bridge this gap.

For tumors in this location, the extended endoscopic endonasal approach could offer an alternative route. We present a case of pons herniation after this technique.

In this study, we investigated the prevalent HIV-1 genotypes and drug-resistance-associated mutations in drug-naïve HIV-1 individuals in Cabo Verde. The study, conducted between 2018 and 2019, included drug-naïve HIV-1 individuals from the São Vicente, Boa Vista, Fogo, and Santiago islands.

A search of the PubMed, Cochrane, B-On, and Scopus databases up to December 2023 was conducted and included 11 studies with 1118 HIV-1 pol sequences. Drug resistance mutations (DRMs) to NNRTIs were found in 13% of the drug-naive individuals and 31% of those on ART, while NRTI resistance occurred in 5% and 10%, respectively.

New strategies, including the use of beneficial microbes, are being explored to mitigate wildlife diseases. This study evaluated the effect of oral supplementation with postbiotic antimycobacterial metabolites produced using Ingulados' lactic acid bacteria (LAB) collection on TB development in wild boar.

However, eDNA biomonitoring is limited by biases toward certain species and the low taxonomic resolution of current metabarcoding approaches. Shotgun metagenomics of eDNA enables the collection of whole ecosystem data by sequencing all molecules present, allowing characterization and identification.

Objective: To evaluate the risk factors for healthcare-related infections during the COVID-19 pandemic in intensive care units, to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection, Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection, and ventilator-associated pneumonia, and to describe healthcare-associated infections in the waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: This nested case-control study was conducted in a 137-bed adult medical/surgical intensive care unit at a private hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, between January 11, 2019, and May 21, 2022. Case patients were identified using the Nosocomial Infection Control Committee database and control patients were identified using the intensive care unit's EPIMED system.
This study describes the synthesis of new carboxylated merocyanine dyes by Knoevenagel condensation between 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and indolium/benzoindolium- and benzothiazolium-based coupling compounds. The condensations were performed in the presence of ammonium acetate, and the products were obtained in good yields after simple purification. These merocyanines exhibit UV-A-to-blue absorption and blue-to-green fluorescence emission, characterized by relatively large Stokes shift values (∼5000 cm).

The comparison of binding constants ( ) shows that negatively charged TPPS possesses higher affinity to BSA than positively charged TMPyP. Thermodynamic characteristics of the binding process were obtained in accordance with the van't Hoff theory by processing nonlinear dependences of ln on inverse absolute temperature within the framework of two models: taking into account the dependence or independence of the change in the standard heat capacity (Δ ) on temperature.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAkaganeite (β-FeOOH) has been intensely investigated to be used in different electrochemical applications as a cathode material in Li-ion batteries owing to its unique structural characteristics, including channels capable of accommodating and reversibly extracting charged species such as lithium or sodium ions. We revisited the synthesis, and its electrochemical properties based on a combined experimental/theoretical approach aiming to understand the mechanism of the electron transfer in this material. Electrochemical investigations, employing LiSO aqueous electrolyte, unveiled notable alterations in the charge/discharge profiles.

In this work, we investigate the formation and emission characteristics of plexcitons, arising from the interaction between surface plasmons in narrow gold nanotrenches and excitons in monolayer WSe. We study this strong plasmon-exciton coupling in both the far-field and the near-field.

In both compounds, the bright state is the second excited state, designated as a L) state. Through a detailed exploration of the potential energy profile and the conical intersection structure between the L) and ground states, we gained a better understanding of how cleavage might occur in both molecules upon photoexcitation.

Reproductive biotechnologies are widely consolidated as a methodology in cattle breeding and have an important impact on the genetic improvement of cattle herds. Semen is an important source of dissemination of pathogenic microorganisms during reproductive procedures. To ensure the sanitary quality of the semen, it is essential to consider the presence of various microorganisms including viruses.

Under a suitable smallness condition, we show that the density of particles satisfies a law of large numbers with respect to the NESS, with an explicit rate of convergence, and we also show that at mesoscopic scales the NESS is well approximated by a local equilibrium (product) measure, in the total variation distance. In addition, in dimensions we show a central limit theorem for the density of particles under the NESS.
