Ionogel are versatile materials, as they present the electrical properties of ionic liquids and also dimensional stability, since they are trapped in a solid matrix, allowing application in electronic devices such as gas sensors and electronic noses. In this work, ionogels were designed to act as a sensitive layer for the detection of volatiles in a custom-made electronic nose. Ionogels composed of gelatin and a single imidazolium ionic liquid were doped with bare and functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles, producing ionogels with adjustable target selectivity.

At the turn of the millennium, the government enforced a policy of mandatory hospital births to bring the country closer to United Nations' Millennium Development Goals in terms of maternal and infant health, but these reforms were accompanied by a dramatic increase in cesarean rates.

Rethinking Reproductive Technologies and Modernities in Time and Space.

This overview proposes new ways of interrogating assumptions about globally circulating reproductive technologies and modernities. Comparing and contrasting East Asian experiences of childbirth medicalization provides an alternative to Western-centric discourses and models that tend to focus on notions of individual choice. This special section draws on Chinese and Japanese materials from the twentieth century forward to document how the medicalization of childbirth and use of technology alongside shifting moral ideals and public health policies work to co-produce globalized frameworks of distinctly East Asian modernities.

The materials described in this work result from the self-assembly of liquid crystals and ionic liquids into droplets, stabilized within a biopolymeric matrix. These systems are extremely versatile gels, in terms of composition, and offer potential for fine tuning of both structure and function, as each individual component can be varied. Here, the characterization and application of these gels as sensing thin films in gas sensor devices is presented.

Multi-detector CT for suspected hip fragility fractures: A diagnostic test accuracy systematic review and meta-analysis.

To perform a systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis to determine the diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) of Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT) for detecting proximal femoral (hip) fragility fractures in patients with a negative initial radiograph. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched to identify relevant studies published between January 2000 and May 2018. Articles underwent title and abstract screening followed by full-text screening.

An Optimized E-nose for Efficient Volatile Sensing and Discrimination.

Electronic noses (E-noses), are usually composed by an array of sensors with different selectivities towards classes of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). These devices have been applied to a variety of fields, including environmental protection, public safety, food and beverage industries, cosmetics, and clinical diagnostics. This work demonstrates that it is possible to classify eleven VOCs from different chemical classes using a single gas sensing biomaterial that changes its optical properties in the presence of VOCs.

Intracranial myopericytoma: a tumour in a rare location.

A 49-year-old female with history of headache, nausea and vomiting with some weeks of evolution, without neurological symptoms. Radiology revealed an expansive lesion near the inferior vermix and cerebellar tonsils, with heterogeneous gadolinium uptake and mass effect on the fourth ventricle, representing a probable extraventricular origin for the lesion. Pathological examination showed a proliferation of oval/spindle cell proliferation with eosinophil cytoplasm and small and monotonous nuclei, without mitoses.

Scalable and Easy-to-use System Architecture for Electronic Noses.

The purpose of this work was the development of a scalable and easy-to-use electronic noses (E-noses) system architecture for volatile organic compounds sensing, towards the final goal of using several E-noses acquiring large datasets at the same time. In order to accomplish this, each E-nose system is comprised by a delivery system, a detection system and a data acquisition and control system. In order to increase the scalability, the data is stored in a database common to all E-noses.

Brain Herniation into Giant Arachnoid Granulation: An Unusual Case.

Arachnoid granulations are structures filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that extend into the venous sinuses through openings in the dura mater and allow the drainage of CSF from subarachnoid space into venous system. Usually they are asymptomatic but can be symptomatic when large enough to cause sinus occlusion. We report a rare case of a brain herniation into a giant arachnoid granulation in an asymptomatic elderly male patient, which was discovered incidentally.

Demand for more environmentally friendly practices have led to the adoption of several feed supplements by the fish farming industry. In the present study, we investigated a commercially available formula that includes a mixture of three compounds: organic acids, a phytochemical and Biomin® Permeabilizing Complex. This mixture demonstrated antimicrobial properties in vitro and was able to inhibit growth of multiple species of aquatic bacterial pathogens, including Aeromonas salmonicida.

Introduction: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are important causes of neurological dysfunction and are many times misdiagnosed. Particularly in older populations, DAVFs may present with a selective cognitive dysfunction.

Fertility decline in rural China: a comparative analysis.

Many models have been proposed to explain both the rapidity of China's fertility decline after the 1960s and the differential timing of the decline in different places. In particular, scholars argue over whether deliberate policies of fertility control, institutional changes, or general modernization factors contribute most to changes in fertility behavior. Here the authors adopt an ethnographically grounded behavioral-institutional approach to analyze qualitative and quantitative data from three different rural settings: Xiaoshan County in Zhejiang (East China), Ci County in Hebei, (North China), and Yingde County in Guangdong (South China).

Traumatic middle cerebral artery aneurysm secondary to a gunshot wound.

Traumatic intracranial aneurysms are rare lesions, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial aneurysms. Formation of these lesions after a penetrating missile wound is very unusual, and diagnosis can be difficult due to the presence of associated lesions. In this article, we report a case of a woman who developed a middle cerebral artery aneurysm after a gunshot wound, and discuss potential pitfalls found during diagnostic work-up.
