Purpose: To characterize breast cancer (BC) incidence by age at diagnosis and BC subtype among disaggregated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women and non-Hispanic White (NHW) women in Hawai'i.

Methods: Using 1990-2014 data from the Hawai'i tumor registry, we estimated age-adjusted incidence rates (AAIR) of BC and the annual percent change in BC incidence by age (<50 and ≥50 years) and BC subtype (hormone receptor [HR]+/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 [HER2]-, HR+/HER2+, HR-/HER2+, triple negative BC) for Filipino American (FA), Japanese American (JA), Native Hawaiian (NH), and NHW women.

Although racial/ethnic disparities in health-care access, treatment, and cancer outcomes are well documented, the impact of racial/ethnic discrimination on cancer survivorship is unclear. Despite the biological and therapeutic relevance of CDK4/6 for the treatment of HR+, HER2- advanced breast cancer, the detailed mode of action of CDK4/6 inhibitors is not completely understood. Of particular interest, phosphorylation of CDK4 at T172 (pT172) is critical for generating the active conformation, yet no such crystal structure has been reported to date. We describe here the x-ray structure of active CDK4-cyclin D3 bound to the CDK4/6 inhibitor abemaciclib and discuss the key aspects of the catalytically-competent complex.

We present a case of an 80-year-old female with a past medical history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who was incidentally found to have severe circumferential thoracic aortic calcification detected on chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest. This case highlights the chronic inflammatory state and immunological vascular damage as key mechanisms for the accumulation of dystrophic calcification in the blood vessels and soft tissues of patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. It also emphasizes the importance of coordinated multidisciplinary care and management between different specialties including primary care physician (PCP), cardiology, and rheumatology to address all the challenges related to disease control and optimize cardiovascular risk factors in this patient population.
