Aims: To study the cellular growth and morphology of Yarrowia lipolytica W29 and its lipase and protease production under increased air pressures.

Methods And Results: Batch cultures of the yeast were conducted in a pressurized bioreactor at 4 and 8 bar of air pressure and the cellular behaviour was compared with cultures at atmospheric pressure. No inhibition of cellular growth was observed by the increase of pressure.

Short-term effects of amoxicillin on bacterial communities in manured soil.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, nutrients and antibiotics that enter the soil by means of manure may enhance the proportion of bacteria displaying antibiotic resistance among soil bacteria and may affect bacterial community structure and function. To investigate the effect of manure and amoxicillin added to manure on soil bacterial communities, microcosm experiments were performed with two soil types and the following treatments: (1) nontreated, (2) manure-treated, (3) treated with manure supplemented with 10 mg amoxicillin kg(-1) soil and (4) treated with manure supplemented with 100 mg amoxicillin kg(-1) soil, with four replicates per treatment. Manure significantly increased the total CFU count and the amoxicillin-resistant CFU count of both soil types.

Diversity of ndo genes in mangrove sediments exposed to different sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutants originating from oil spills and wood and fuel combustion are pollutants which are among the major threats to mangrove ecosystems. In this study, the composition and relative abundance in the sediment bacterial communities of naphthalene dioxygenase (ndo) genes which are important for bacterial adaptation to environmental PAH contamination were investigated. Three urban mangrove sites which had characteristic compositions and levels of PAH compounds in the sediments were selected.

Introduction: Investigation of the role of vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) and VEGF receptor-3 (VEGFR-3) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has mainly focused on lymph node (LN) metastasis related to lymphangiogenesis. However, the coexpression of VEGF-C/VEGFR-3 by tumour cells can independently play an important role. The present study was therefore designed to evaluate VEGF-C/VEGFR-3 coexpression in tumour cells from the primary tumour and corresponding LN metastases.

Pseudomonas community structure and antagonistic potential in the rhizosphere: insights gained by combining phylogenetic and functional gene-based analyses.

Pseudomonas-specific gacA fingerprints of total-community (TC) rhizosphere DNA were surprisingly diverse, plant-specific and differed markedly from those of the corresponding bulk soils.

The occurrence of microdiamonds in Mesoproterozoic Chapada Diamantina intrusive rocks--Bahia/Brazil.

The origin of diamonds from Serra do Espinhaço in Diamantina region (State of Minas Gerais) and in Chapada Diamantina, Lençóis region (State of Bahia) remains uncertain, even taking into account the ample research carried out during the last decades. The lack of typical satellite minerals in both districts makes a kimberlitic source for these diamonds uncertain. In mid 18th century the occurrence of a metamorphosed igneous rock composed of martite, sericite and tourmaline was described in Diamantina region and named hematitic phyllite, considered by some researchers as a possible diamond source.

Background: The increasing global popularity of herbal remedies requires further investigation to determine the probable factors driving this burgeoning phenomenon. We propose that the users' perception of efficacy is an important factor and assessed the perceived efficacy of herbal remedies by users accessing primary health facilities throughout Trinidad. Additionally, we determined how these users rated herbal remedies compared to conventional allopathic medicines as being less, equally or more efficacious.

Arthroscopic treatment of chronic anterior instability of the shoulder in Marfan's syndrome.

We present a case of recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation in a patient with Marfan's syndrome who presented with hyperlaxity that has been treated arthroscopically. We discuss abnormal findings at arthroscopic evaluation, including complete absence of the mid anterior capsule, which left the subscapularis uncovered, and we hypothesize that repetitive trauma to the capsule was not followed by a normal process of remodeling because of a lack of competent elastic fibers and a poor capacity for soft tissue healing. The inferior insertion of the labrum and the inferior glenohumeral ligament seemed normal through the large volume of the pouch.

Antinociceptive action of (+/-)-cis-(6-ethyl-tetrahydropyran-2-yl)-formic acid in mice.

The objective of this study was to investigate spinal and supraspinal antinociceptive effects of a new synthetic compound, (+/-)-cis-(6-ethyl-tetrahydropyran-2-yl)-formic acid (tetrahydropyran derivative). Its activity was compared with those from morphine. In peripheral models of inflammation and hyperalgesia, tetrahydropyran derivative significantly reduced nociceptive effect induced by acetic acid or formalin in mice.

Antinociceptive activity of Amazonian Copaiba oils.

Copaiba oil resins are extensively commercialized in Brazil as capsules or crude oil and used as anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. Comparative pharmacological studies between different species of Copaiba oils are scarce. In the present work we compared the antinociceptive activity of two Amazonian Copaiba oils (Copaifera multijuga Hayne and Copaifera reticulata Ducke, Fabaceae) administered by oral route using peripheral (acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing and formalin), spinal (tail flick) and supra-spinal (hot plate) models.
