Nutritional characterization of patients with oropharyngeal cancers: impact of human papillomavirus status.

Background: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive status is increasing relative to HPV-negative disease. Nutritional features of OPSCC patients according to HPV status is unclear.

Subjects/methods: Canadian and Spanish patients with OPSCC were assessed for body mass index (BMI), weight loss grade (WLG), and computed tomography-defined skeletal muscle index (SMI).

Clinical, Histological, and HPV-Related Factors Associated to Diffuse Presentation of Exophytic Nasal Papillomas.

: Sinonasal exophytic papillomas (SNEP) are benign tumours arising from nasal mucosa. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection seems to be related to the aetiology of a fraction of SNEP cases. SNEP presentation can be focal (FSNEP) or diffuse (DSNEP), but factors related to focal or diffuse presentation have not yet been well ascertained.

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of salivary glands.

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma (SMEC) of the salivary glands is a rare variant of low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma with scanty cellular atypia characterized by marked fibrosis/sclerosis and a rich inflammatory infiltrate. Herein, we report 25 unpublished cases of SMEC, two of them with prominent eosinophilia (2/25; 8%) and three with abundant IgG4-positive plasma cells (3/25; 12%). In our series of salivary SMEC, molecular analysis using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and/or next-generation sequencing (NGS) provided evidence of MAML2 gene rearrangement in 18 cases of the 21 analyzable cases tested (86%), while this gene locus was intact in 3 cases (14%).

Immune checkpoint molecules performance in ANCA vasculitis.

Objective: The PD-1 axis promotes protection against autoimmunity. Immune checkpoint (IC) molecules performance in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) remains unknown. This study aims to assess the IC pathway's role in the AAV's pathophysiology.

Severe ischemia-reperfusion injury induces epigenetic inactivation of LHX1 in kidney progenitor cells after kidney transplantation.

Severe ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) causes acute and chronic kidney allograft damage. As therapeutic interventions to reduce damage are limited yet, research on how to promote kidney repair has gained significant interest. To address this question, we performed genome-wide transcriptome and epigenome profiling in progenitor cells isolated from the urine of deceased (severe IRI) and living (mild IRI) donor human kidney transplants and identified LIM homeobox-1 (LHX1) as an epigenetically regulated gene whose expression depends on the IRI severity.

Predicting harmful alcohol use prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa between 2015 and 2019: Evidence from population-based HIV impact assessment.

Introduction: Harmful alcohol use is associated with significant risks to public health outcomes worldwide. Although data on harmful alcohol use have been collected by population-based HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA), there is a dearth of analysis on the effect of HIV/ART status on harmful alcohol use in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries with PHIA surveys.

Methods: A secondary analysis of the PHIA surveys: Namibia (n = 27,382), Tanzania (n = 1807), Zambia (n = 2268), Zimbabwe (n = 3418), Malawi (n = 2098), Namibia (n = 27,382), and Eswatini (n = 2762).

Urinary soluble PD-1 as a biomarker of checkpoint inhibitor-induced acute tubulointerstitial nephritis.

Background: Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) related to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI-AIN) has a not completely understood pathophysiology. Our objectives were to analyze possible biomarkers for the differentiation between acute tubular necrosis (ATN) and AIN, especially in cancer patients, and to study the participation of the immune checkpoint pathway in ICI-AIN.

Methods: We performed an observational study.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) induce acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) in 2-5% of patients, with a clearly higher incidence when they are combined with platinum derivatives. Unfortunately, suitable disease models and non-invasive biomarkers are lacking. To fill this gap in our understanding, we investigated the renal effects of cisplatin and anti-PD-L1 antibodies in mice, assessing PD-1 renal expression and cytokine levels in mice with AIN, and then we compared these findings with those in AIN-diagnosed cancer patients.

False positive elevation in serum creatinine: a case report.

Background: Paraproteins can interfere with several substances, producing erroneous laboratory measurements. The diagnosis of kidney disease in patients with hematological disorders has important prognosis implications. An elevated creatinine with no other signs of kidney disease should prompt the idea of a spurious creatinine.

Introduction: There is a need to implement routine perinatal mental health screening in Spain. Therefore, it is necessary to systematise the detection of depressive and anxious symptoms in pregnancy and postpartum using the same instrument. Early interventions may promote reductions in mothers' anxiety-depression (AD) symptoms and improvements in their offspring. This longitudinal randomized research was conducted to assess the effects of interdisciplinary online therapeutic groups (GIO) in at-risk mothers and babies during the COVID-19 pandemic in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Barcelona (Spain). A total of 135 babies were born from March 2020 to June 2021 in a primary healthcare center of Barcelona (Spain).

Endothelium-Independent Vasorelaxant Effects of Sudachitin and Demethoxysudachitin, Polymethoxyflavone from the Peel of Citrus sudachi on Isolated Rat Aorta.

Although polymethoxyflavones have been reported to exhibit various pharmacological actions, the effects of polymethoxyflavones sudachitin and demethoxysudachitin from the peel of Citrus sudachi on the cardiovascular system have not been clarified. This study investigated the mechanisms of vasorelaxation induced by sudachitin and demethoxysudachitin in rat aorta. Both compounds inhibited phenylephrine-induced contractions in a concentration-dependent manner.

The Combination of Binding Avidity of Ovomucoid-Specific IgE Antibody and Specific IgG4 Antibody Can Predict Positive Outcomes of Oral Food Challenges during Stepwise Slow Oral Immunotherapy in Children with Hen's Egg Allergy.

To increase the prediction accuracy of positive oral food challenge (OFC) outcomes during stepwise slow oral immunotherapy (SS-OIT) in children with a hen's egg (HE) allergy, we evaluated the predictive value of the combination of antigen-specific IgE (sIgE) with antigen binding avidity and sIgG4 values. Sixty-three children with HE allergy undergoing SS-OIT were subjected to repeated OFCs with HE. We measured the ovomucoid (OVM)-sIgE by ImmunoCAP or densely carboxylated protein (DCP) microarray, sIgG4 by DCP microarray, and the binding avidity of OVM-sIgE defined as the level of 1/IC (nM) measured by competitive binding inhibition assays.

Bioactive compounds and biomedical applications of endophytic fungi: a recent review.

Human life has been significantly impacted by the creation and spread of novel species of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and virus strains that are difficult to manage. Scientists and researchers have recently been motivated to seek out alternatives and other sources of safe and ecologically friendly active chemicals that have a powerful and effective effect against a wide variety of pathogenic bacteria as a result of all these hazards and problems. In this review, endophytic fungi and their bioactive compounds and biomedical applications were discussed.

A case of early-onset idiopathic chronic pancreatitis associated with a loss-of-function TRPV6 p.R483Q variant successfully treated by pancreatic duct stenting.

Several pancreatitis-related genetic variants have been identified. Recently, the association of loss-of-function variants in the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 6 (TRPV6) gene and early-onset non-alcoholic chronic pancreatitis (CP) has been reported. However, detailed clinical presentation of the cases carrying TRPV6 variants remains largely unknown.

The exploration of maternal representations during a parenthood-centred psychotherapy from pregnancy to one year postpartum.

Maternal representations play a key role in intrapsychic conflicts relating to accession to parenthood and in the formation of the mother-baby bond. Around the birth of the child, the shadows of past objects are cast on the baby and the parent's self-image. Mother-baby psychoanalytic psychotherapy helps us to understand internal conflicts that tend to interfere with the mother's representations of her child or of herself as a mother, as well as aiming to reduce the risk of difficulties for the child.

Recommendations for the use of biomarkers for head and neck cancer, including salivary gland tumours: A Consensus of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology and the Spanish Society of Pathology.

The treatment of head and neck and salivary gland tumours is complicated and is constantly evolving. Prognostic and predictive indicators of response to treatment are enormously valuable for designing individualized therapies, which justifies their research and validation. Some biomarkers, such as p16, Epstein-Barr virus, PD-L1, androgen receptors and HER-2, are already used routinely in clinical practice.

Orthotopic murine xenograft model of uveal melanoma with spontaneous liver metastasis.

Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular malignancy in adults. Despite the effective primary treatment, up to 50% of patients with uveal melanoma will develop metastatic lesions mainly in the liver, which are resistant to conventional chemotherapy and lead to patient's death. To date, no orthotopic murine models of uveal melanoma which can develop spontaneous metastasis are available for preclinical studies.

Dual Costimulatory and Coinhibitory Targeting with a Hybrid Fusion Protein as an Immunomodulatory Therapy in Lupus Nephritis Mice Models.

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a complex autoimmune disorder mostly mediated by B-cells in which costimulatory signals are involved. This immune dysregulation can cause tissue damage and inflammation of the kidney, resulting in lupus nephritis and chronic renal failure. Given the previous experience reported with CTLA4-Ig as well as recent understanding of the PD-1 pathway in this setting, our group was encouraged to evaluate, in the NZBWF1 model, a human fusion recombinant protein (Hybri) with two domains: CTLA4, blocking the CD28-CD80 costimulatory pathway, and PD-L2, exacerbating the PD-1-PD-L2 coinhibitory pathway.

Tacrolimus CYP3A Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Preformed T- and B-Cell Alloimmune Memory Improve Current Pretransplant Rejection-Risk Stratification in Kidney Transplantation.

Achieving fast immunosuppression blood exposure after kidney transplantation is key to abrogating both preformed and anti-donor humoral and cellular alloresponses. However, while tacrolimus (TAC) is the cornerstone immunosuppressant inhibiting adaptive alloimmunity, its blood exposure is directly impacted by different single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CYP3A TAC-metabolizing enzymes. Here, we investigated how functional TAC-CYP3A genetic variants (/) influence the main baseline clinical and immunological risk factors of biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR) by means of preformed donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) and donor-specific alloreactive T cells (DSTs) in a large European cohort of 447 kidney transplants receiving TAC-based immunosuppression.

Collapsing Glomerulonephritis in a Kidney Transplant Recipient after mRNA SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination.

With the vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), studies are describing cases of glomerulonephritis arising after vaccination. We present the first case of a kidney transplant patient who, after mRNA vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, developed nephrotic proteinuria and renal dysfunction, with a biopsy diagnostic of collapsing glomerulonephritis. No other triggers for this glomerulonephritis were identified.
