Bichat Hospital's free and anonymous Voluntary Counseling and Testing centre in Paris is widely visited, with a high rate of HIV-positive diagnosis. This study proposed, in this centre, to describe the HIV newly-diagnosed patients over an 8-year period and to determinate risk factors for failure to return for a positive result. Higher risk for failure to return was found among the heterosexual subjects regardless of their socio-economic background.

We explored how physicians in France have applied these evolving guidelines for ART initiation over the last decade in two different situations: chronic (CHI) and primary HIV-1 infection (PHI), since specific recommendations for PHI are also provided in France.
Methods: Data came from the ANRS PRIMO (1267 patients enrolled during PHI in 1996-2010) and COPANA (800 subjects enrolled at HIV diagnosis in 2004-2008) cohorts.
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of adding interleukin-2 (IL-2) to an optimized background treatment in HIV-1 patients with advanced failure.
Design: Randomized, open-label, multicentre controlled trial.
Methods: Patients with CD4 T-cell count of less than 200 cells/microl, plasma HIV-1 RNA of more than 10 000 copies/ml and a genotypic sensitivity score showing two or less active drugs were randomized to either eight IL-2 cycles with optimized background treatment or optimized background treatment alone.
