Satiety and consumers' perceptions: What opinions do Argentinian and Brazilian people have about yogurt fortified with dairy and legume proteins?

This study (1) evaluated the perceptions of Argentinian and Brazilian consumers regarding yogurt fortified with dairy proteins, legume proteins, or a combination of both, and (2) determined the satiety expectations of these foods as well as the consumers' intentions to taste and purchase protein-fortified yogurt. A total of 298 Argentinian and 100 Brazilian participants completed an online survey for this study. The free word association technique was used to investigate their perceptions about "satiety" as a verbal stimulus and 6 concepts of yogurt as visual/verbal stimuli (yogurt, set yogurt, skim set yogurt, skim set yogurt with a high content of dairy proteins, skim set yogurt with a high content of legume proteins, and skim set yogurt with a mix of dairy and legume proteins).

Is it possible to obtain food consumption information through children's drawings? Comparison with the Free Listing.

The aims of this research were 1) to study the children's drawings to obtain scientific information about food consumption; 2) to compare this method with an existing one (Free Listing); and 3) to compare fruits- and vegetables-consumed by children of different cultural groups within a same country. Children (n = 105) from two Argentinian cities (Salta in the northwest and 9 de Julio in the Pampean region), reported the fruits and vegetables they consumed, with the Free Listing and the new Free Drawing methods. Contingency tables were built and cognitive saliency indexes (CSI) were calculated.

Joining the club: First detection of African swine fever in wild boar in Germany.

African swine fever (ASF) has spread across many countries in Europe since the introduction into Georgia in 2007. We report here on the first cases of ASF in wild boar detected in Germany close to the border with Poland. In addition to the constant risk of ASF virus (ASFV) spread through human activities, movements of infected wild boar also represent a route of introduction.

Role of metastasectomy for liver metastasis in stage IV anal cancer.

Introduction: There is a paucity of data on the role of metastasectomy for metastatic anal cancer on survival outcomes. We aim to define the role of metastasectomy in stage IV anal cancer.

Methods: National Cancer Database (NCDB) from 2004 to 2014 was accessed to include patients with metastatic anal cancer, excluding adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine, and 'other' histologies.

Anti-HER2 therapy for breast cancer in older patients.

Older patients now form between 30 and 40% of breast cancer (BC) patients. Managing older patients with BC is particularly challenging due to the limited availability of high-quality evidence. In this review we discuss the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of anti-HER2 agents in older patients with HER2-positive BC is presented, with a particular look at the latest results of promising new agents such trastuzumab-deruxtecan.

Force decay evaluation of latex and non-latex orthodontic intraoral elastics: in vivo study.

Objective: This clinical study was conducted in order to evaluate force decay over time of latex and non-latex orthodontic intraoral elastics.

Methods: Patients (n = 15) were evaluated using latex and non-latex elastics in the periods of : 0, 1, 3, 12 and 24 hours. The rubber bands were transferred to the testing machine (EMIC DL-500 MF), and force values were recorded after stretching the elastic to a length of 25mm.

Multisite phosphorylation is required for sustained interaction with GRKs and arrestins during rapid μ-opioid receptor desensitization.

G protein receptor kinases (GRKs) and β-arrestins are key regulators of μ-opioid receptor (MOR) signaling and trafficking. We have previously shown that high-efficacy opioids such as DAMGO stimulate a GRK2/3-mediated multisite phosphorylation of conserved C-terminal tail serine and threonine residues, which facilitates internalization of the receptor. In contrast, morphine-induced phosphorylation of MOR is limited to Ser and is not sufficient to drive substantial receptor internalization.

Physico-chemical and sensory properties of marmalades made from mixtures of fruits and under-exploited Andean tubers.

Background: This work studies the added value to the Andean tuber crops through the production of jams. The objective were: (1) to study the sensory and instrumental characteristics of dietetic marmalades made with fruits and Andean tubers; (2) to research consumer's acceptability and emotional responses; (3) to assess the relationship between sensory and instrumental variables and (4) to determine sensory, instrumental and emotional variables that influence the acceptability.

Results: Pearson's correlations showed that spreadability was the variable better predicted by sensory and instrumental ones.

The intersection of gender and place in online health activities.

This study examines how rurality and gender are related to online health activities. Rural women face greater health risks and yet have access to a weaker health system infrastructure, which has resulted in a health disadvantage. New health information technologies may ameliorate some of these disparities; thus, the authors examine the relevance of gender and place in going online to search for health information, buy medicines, participate in health-related support groups, communicate with physicians, or maintain a personal health record.

Objective. Few social scientists have examined how Internet usage, including using the Internet for health purposes, may affect mental health. This study assesses whether the type or amount of online health activities and the timing of Internet use are associated with psychological distress.

Anaerobe/aerobe environmental flux determines protein expression profiles of Bacteroides fragilis, a redox pathogen.

The oxidation-reduction (redox) of the environment characterizes the Bacteroides fragilis pathogenic potential. Previously, using 3D confocal laser scanning microscopy, the bacteria prepared from cultures grown under oxidizing conditions (Eh(7)ca. + 100 mV) were able to penetrate into Hela cell monolayers.

Craniofacial characteristics of patients with heart disease.

Introduction: Children with congenital heart disease commonly experience delayed growth. Studies comparing growth and development of these children generally found that they have decreased height and weight, but with no information on craniofacial growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial characteristics of patients with heart disease.

The redox potential interferes with the expression of laminin binding molecules in Bacteroides fragilis.

The Bacteroides fragilis ATCC strain was grown in a synthetic media with contrasting redox potential (Eh) levels [reduced (-60 mV) or oxidised (+100 mV)] and their adhesion capacity to extracellular matrix components was evaluated. The strain was capable of adhering to laminin, fibronectin, fibronectin + heparan sulphate and heparan sulphate. A stronger adherence to laminin after growing the strain under oxidising conditions was verified.

Three generations of experience and thought in microbiology and infection.

Views and comments were sought from Brian Lacey, who was professionally active from the 1930s to the 1970s, Alain Dublanchet, active from the 1960s to the 2000s, and Mark Pallen, active from the 1990s to 2000 and beyond. Professor Lacey was professor of microbiology at the Westminster Medical School, University of London, United Kingdom, for many years and is now retired. Docteur Dublanchet is the long time head of the laboratory of microbiology and virology at the Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal de Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in the greater Paris area.

Caregiving outside of the home: the effects of race on depression.

Objective: This research examines the conditions that determine whether Blacks experience lower or higher levels of depression while caregiving outside of the home, as compared to Whites. Some prior literature has found that African Americans report a lesser caregiver burden despite an increased likelihood that they will acquire this role, and decreased resources to do so. Others have found that African Americans experience the same caregiver burden and distress as Whites.

The dynamic interplay between Western medicine and the complementary and alternative medicine movement: how activists perceive a range of responses from physicians and hospitals.

Scholars must examine the dynamic relationship between activists and organisational actors, because all social movements interact in some way with the institutions they seek to change, and because activists engage in ongoing attempts to shape these interactions. Using data from the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) movement in California and hospitals in New York and Massachusetts, I identify how physicians and hospitals respond to the CAM movement, and how activists perceive each response. Using social movement and institutional theories, this study illustrates that social movements can penetrate and reshape formal organisations, because established organisations have permeable boundaries.
