Idiopathic interstitial pulmonary fibrosis with hypercapnia.

A 38-year-old patient with effort dyspnea, somnolence, cianosis and cor pulmonale is presented. Chest roentgenograms and lung function studies suggested the diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis. The patient showed also severe hypercapnia with normal resting ventilation and ventilatory response to exercise lower than usual for this condition.

Effects of atropine on natural deflation flows and P-V curves of the isolated lung lobe.

Static pressure-volume (P-V) curves and natural deflation flows (NDF) in isolated dog's lung lobes were obtained before and after atropine. Since elastic pressure was the driving force for the expiratory flow this preparation was devoid of the influence of compressive forces. A significant shift to the left of the P-V curve was observed after atropine.

Lower-zone emphysema in young patients without alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency.

Fibrosarcoma of the trachea with severe tracheal obstruction.

777-781. A patient with a tracheal fibrosarcoma is reported. The tumour was located just above the thoracic inlet and produced severe obstruction predominantly during expiration.

Inhibition of replication of ribonucleic acid bacteriophage f2 by superinfection with bacteriophage T4.

Superinfection by phage T4 of cells infected by the ribonucleic acid (RNA) phage f2 results in inhibition of further f2 production. Experiments using rifampin show that the exclusion of f2 requires T4 gene function soon after T4 infection. By using a sensitive new peptide-mapping procedure to identify f2 coat protein in infected cells, we show that synthesis of the f2 coat occurs at a reduced level until 4 min after T4 superinfection and then ceases abruptly.
