Background: Over the past two decades, there has been a decrease in dental diseases in Australia; however, the number of preventable dental hospital admissions has not diminished. This review reports on the factors associated with preventable dental hospital admissions in Australia.

Methods: A search of five databases was conducted using Medical subject headings/Emtree terms and Index terms.

Daily rhythms influence the ability of lung-derived extracellular vesicles to modulate bone marrow cell phenotype.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are important mediators of intercellular communication and have been implicated in myriad physiologic and pathologic processes within the hematopoietic system. Numerous factors influence the ability of EVs to communicate with target marrow cells, but little is known about how circadian oscillations alter EV function. In order to explore the effects of daily rhythms on EV-mediated intercellular communication, we used a well-established model of lung-derived EV modulation of the marrow cell transcriptome.

Impact of Language Experience on Attention to Faces in Infancy: Evidence From Unimodal and Bimodal Bilingual Infants.

Faces capture and maintain infants' attention more than other visual stimuli. The present study addresses the impact of early language experience on attention to faces in infancy. It was hypothesized that infants learning two spoken languages (unimodal bilinguals) and hearing infants of Deaf mothers learning British Sign Language and spoken English (bimodal bilinguals) would show enhanced attention to faces compared to monolinguals.

Vulnerability, Harm, and Compromised Ethics Revealed by the Experiences of Queer Birthing Women in Rural Healthcare.

Phenomenological interviews with queer women in rural Nova Scotia reveal significant forms of trauma experienced during labour and birth. Situating the accounts of participants within both phenomenological and intersectional analyses reveals harms enabled by structurally embedded heteronormative and homophobic healthcare practices and policies. Our account illustrates the breadth and depth of harm experienced and outlines how these violate core ethical principles and values in healthcare.

Predicting trajectories of posttraumatic growth following acquired physical disability.

Purpose/objective: This study examined predictors of trajectories of posttraumatic growth (PTG) among individuals with acquired physical disability across the first year after discharge from acute rehabilitation. Research Method/Design: Data were collected from participants (64 veterans with spinal cord injury and dysfunction, and 19 with brain injury) on various demographic and injury characteristics, appraisals of injury, and coping styles at baseline, as well as PTG at baseline and 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups.

Results: Comparison of initial curvature models suggested that a cubic, or S-shaped, trend best fit the trajectory of PTG over time.

Phrenic nerve stimulation to treat patients with central sleep apnoea and heart failure.

Aims: The presence of central sleep apnoea (CSA) is associated with poor prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). The aim of this analysis was to evaluate if using phrenic nerve stimulation to treat CSA in patients with CSA and HF was associated with changes in HF-specific metrics.

Methods And Results: All patients randomized in the remedē System Pivotal Trial and identified at baseline with HF were included (n = 96).

A critical review of human milk sharing using an intersectional feminist framework: Implications for practice.

Objective: Driven by a growing body of research demonstrating the health benefits of human milk over substitute feeding preparations, the demand for human milk donations in North America is rapidly increasing. In the context of an increasingly institutionalized and commercialized human milk market, informal peer-to-peer milk sharing networks are commonplace. Race, class, gender and sexual orientation are intersecting aspects of identity and power that influence participation in breastfeeding and the domain of milk exchange.

Interaction of Donor and Recipient Age: Do Older Heart Transplant Recipients Require Younger Hearts?

Background: Older patients (aged 60 years or more) awaiting heart transplant often have comorbidities that may limit overall survival independent of cardiac status. We hypothesized that these comorbidities have a more-limiting impact on survival than age of donor heart and that older allografts might be utilized in these patients without compromising outcomes.

Methods: We identified all transplant recipients aged more than 60 years in the United Network for Organ Sharing database.

Patterns of Intimate Partner Violence Victimization and Perpetration Among Sexual Minority Women: A Latent Class Analysis.

This study explored patterns of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and perpetration in 150 sexual minority women (SMW): 25.3% had been sexually victimized, 34% physically victimized, 76% psychologically victimized, and 29.3% suffered an IPV-related injury.

Subungual nail bed melanoma masquerading as tinea ungium.

Subungual amelanotic melanoma can masquerade as onychomycosis. Recently a man whose amelanotic nail bed melanoma presented as persistent onychodystrophy was reported in the Dermatology Online Journal. The patient had a persistent nail dystrophy; culture and biopsy of the nail demonstrated Candida and dermatophyte infection, respectively.

Aims: To evaluate the nutritional status and needs of a person with dementia living in an aged care home, including identification of barriers to, and effective strategies for, the provision of person-centred care.

Background: Nutrition and hydration care are integral to quality of life for adults with dementia, but there is little research on whether staff knowledge around effective care strategies for residents is translated into optimal care.

Methods: Using a mixed-methods approach, we developed a patient-centered survey and evaluated the additional predictive utility of the survey compared to a traditional readmission risk model (the Krumholz et al. model).

Elevated IgM levels as a marker for a unique phenotype in patients with Ataxia telangiectasia.

Background: Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a rare, multi-systemic, genetic disorder. Mutations in the ATM gene cause dysfunction in cell-cycle, apoptosis and V (D) J recombination leading to neurodegeneration, cellular, humoral immunodeficiencies and predisposition to malignancies. Previous studies have suggested that a sub-group of AT patients with elevated IgM levels have a distinct and more severe phenotype.
