Gliomas are aggressive neoplasms that diffusely infiltrate the brain and cause neurological symptoms, including cognitive deficits and seizures. Increased mTOR signaling has been implicated in glioma-induced neuronal hyperexcitability, but the molecular and functional consequences have not been identified. Here, we show three types of changes in tumor-associated neurons: (1) downregulation of transcripts encoding excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic proteins and dendritic spine development and upregulation of cytoskeletal transcripts via neuron-specific profiling of ribosome-bound mRNA, (2) marked decreases in dendritic spine density via light and electron microscopy, and (3) progressive functional alterations leading to neuronal hyperexcitability via in vivo calcium imaging.

Tumor associated epilepsy is a common and debilitating co-morbidity of brain tumors, for which inadequate treatments are available. Additionally, animal models suggest a potential link between seizures and tumor progression. Our group has previously described a mouse model of diffusely infiltrating glioma and associated chronic epilepsy.

Uterine endometrioid carcinoma (UEC) has well-defined morphologic features that carry prognostic significance and guide treatment. In addition to the well-known features, tumor budding (TB), poorly differentiated clusters (PDCs), and amount of stroma within the invasive front are associated with a poor prognostic outcome in many carcinomas. Here, we evaluate TB, PDCs, and the stroma percentage in UEC and correlate these findings with morphologic features known to be associated with a poor clinical outcome and with recurrence-free survival (RFS).

EU attitudes are multidimensional and likely to matter differentially for voting across different parties. The 2019 European Parliament (EP) elections offer a unique setting for testing the differential effects of multidimensional EU attitudes, as the election results entailed increased political fragmentation - with notable pro- and anti-EU party groups in the EP gaining strength. This article examines the importance of EU attitudes on electoral choice and zooms in on the influence of specific EU attitudes on party voting in EP elections ('EU issue voting').

Objectives: The aim of the study was to understand the rates of first-trimester medication and procedural abortion provision, sufficiency in abortion training, and factors associated with abortion provision among obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) in Massachusetts.

Study Design: Electronically fielded surveys of a census of OB/GYNs in Massachusetts in 2021 queried physicians on abortion provision, training, practice type, and demographics. Using weighting to account for nonresponse, we generated estimates of the proportion of OB/GYNS providing abortion and used multivariate regression analysis to explore factors associated with abortion provision including practice type, physician sex, and sufficient abortion training.

Objective(s): To evaluate if the type of abortion patients prefer differs for those with a history of intimate partner violence (IPV) compared to those without a history of IPV.

Study Design: We compared choice of medication versus procedural abortion between those with a history of lifetime IPV and those without a history of IPV among patients seeking abortion at 11 weeks' gestation or less. Secondarily, we compared preferred abortion characteristics and assessed reproductive autonomy.

Background: Despite accounting for approximately 20% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States, cisgender women are consistently under-represented and under-engaged in HIV prevention services such as HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Black and Latina cisgender woman (BLCW) are disproportionately impacted by HIV, and face additional barriers to accessing prevention services due to racial/ethnic bias, sexism, and their intersection. Offering self-testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV is one potential strategy for increasing access to-and engagement in-preventative sexual health care among BLCW.

Background: About 25% of pregnancies end in early miscarriage or abortion annually in the United States. While mifepristone is part of the most effective medication regimen for miscarriage and abortion, regulatory burdens and legal restrictions limit its provision in obstetric-gynecological practice. The extent of geographic disparities in mifepristone use is unknown.

Despite the power of path sampling strategies in enabling simulations of rare events, such strategies have not reached their full potential. A common challenge that remains is the identification of a progress coordinate that captures the slow relevant motions of a rare event. Here we have developed a weighted ensemble (WE) path sampling strategy that exploits reinforcement learning to automatically identify an effective progress coordinate among a set of potential coordinates during a simulation.

Hypomethylating agents (HMA) and venetoclax (VEN) are commonly used in patients with -mutated (m) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) ineligible for induction chemotherapy. While prior studies demonstrated high response and survival rates with HMA/VEN in m AML, the impact of treatment modifications in real-world settings is unclear. We retrospectively reviewed 89 m AML patients treated with HMA/VEN from January 2018 to June 2023.

The Stop the Bleed campaign gives bystanders an active role in prehospital hemorrhage control. Whether extending bystanders' role to private vehicle transport (PVT) for urban penetrating trauma improves survival is unknown, but past research has found benefit to police and PVT. We hypothesized that for penetrating trauma in an urban environment, where prehospital procedures have been proven harmful, PVT improves outcomes compared to any EMS or advanced life support (ALS) transport.

Purpose: Upper airway (UA) surgery is commonly employed in the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The intricate pathophysiology of OSA, variability in sites and patterns of UA collapse, and the interaction between anatomical and non-anatomical factors in individual patients may contribute to possible surgical failures. This clinical consensus statement aims to identify areas of agreement among a development group comprising international experts in OSA surgery, regarding the appropriate definition, predictive factors in patients, and management of surgical failure in OSA treatment.

Dehumanization of others has been attributed to institutional processes that spread dehumanizing norms and narratives, as well as to individuals' denial of mind to others. We propose that blatant dehumanization also arises when people actively contemplate others' minds. We introduce the construct of imagined otherness-perceiving that a prototypical member of a social group construes an important facet of the social world in ways that diverge from the way most humans understand it-and argue that such attributions catalyze blatant dehumanization beyond the effects of general perceived difference and group identification.

Mutations in PRPH2 are a relatively common cause of sight-robbing inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs). Peripherin-2 (PRPH2) is a photoreceptor-specific tetraspanin protein that structures the disk rim membranes of rod and cone outer segment (OS) organelles, and is required for OS morphogenesis. PRPH2 is noteworthy for its broad spectrum of disease phenotypes; both inter- and intra-familial heterogeneity have been widely observed and this variability in disease expression and penetrance confounds efforts to understand genotype-phenotype correlations and pathophysiology.
