The RNA genome of the cytopathic NADL isolate of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) has been molecularly cloned and the nucleotide sequence determined. The cloned sequence was 12,573 nucleotides in length, corresponding to a molecular weight of 4.3 X 10(6), having a base composition of 32.

We have looked for conserved DNA sequences between four herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) glycoprotein genes encoding gB, gC, gD, and gE and pseudorabies virus (PRV) DNA, HSV-1 DNA fragments representing these four glycoprotein-coding sequences were hybridized to restriction enzyme fragments of PRV DNA by the Southern blot procedure. Specific hybridization was observed only when HSV-1 gB DNA was used as probe. This region of hybridization was localized to a 5.

The question of attempted field stabilization versus the "scoop and run" approach in the management of trauma has no clear-cut answer. We have long been supporting a complex EMS system based on a hope for its effectiveness, rather than concrete proof. The data we need are not currently available.

From the tumors of the oesophagus studied, 30% were found to be benign. They occurred in a ratio of 2:1 predominantly in men with an average age of 37,1 years compared to 52,5 years in women. The symptoms were unspecific and the prognosis was quo ad sanationem very good.

Observed abrupt and stepwise changes in crossbridge state induced by MgPPi in skeletal fibers using spin label techniques as well as stepwise changes in sarcomere length in actively contracting fibers are considered in terms of a model based on the principles of catastrophe theory and nucleation of structural transitions in mechanically constrained polymeric assemblies.

In a series of 115 black patients admitted to a chronic haemodialysis programme over a 4-year period, a definitive pathological diagnosis was made in 70 cases. Of these, 5 were made anatomically while in 65 the diagnosis was histological. The commonest single cause of end-stage renal disease was essential malignant hypertension which showed a peak incidence in males aged 40 - 50 years.

For Black patients in Johannesburg chronic haemodialysis has been associated with an extremely high mortality rate. A retrospective analysis has shown that the major factor contributing to this is the frequency of primary malignant hypertension, resulting in the death of patients from cardiac failure (sudden death and pulmonary oedema) and cerebrovascular accidents. Septic complications, tuberculosis and shunt complications also contributed to the high death rate.

Although widely recognized by physicians in Africa, the acute renal failure resulting from the use of herbal preparations obtained from witchdoctors and of non-proprietary preparations purchased over the counter from pharmacists has not been fully described in the past. Over a 4-year period at Baragwanath Hospital, 91 cases of this condition were encountered. The clinical spectrum of the disease is described and the problem is discussed, in the setting of the traditional beliefs of these patients.

Many substances in the plant kingdom and in man's diet occur as glycosides. Recent studies have indicated that many glycosides that are not mutagenic in tests such as the Salmonella test become mutagenic upon hydrolysis of the glycosidic linkages. The Salmonella test utilizes a liver homogenate to approximate mammalian metabolism but does not provide a source of the enzymes present in intestinal bacterial flora that hydrolyze the wide variety of glycosides present in nature.

Many old people who are trying to cope with crises in their lives at a time when their physical and emotional resources are lowered could benefit from mental health counseling. A special late counseling service was established for that population in Milwaukee County, despite initial cynicism about its usefulness from both senior citizens and mental health professionals. Minority, economically deprived, and handicapped clients are vigorously recruited.

Previous studies of gastric secretory function and serum gastrin levels in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) have yielded conflicting results. In a study of 30 patients on regular hemodialysis, serum gastrin levels were higher than normal (p less than 0.05), and the gastric secretory response to pentagastrin was normal for the group as a whole.

A patient with a single functioning kidney presented with the nephrotic syndrome. On the basis of highly selective proteinuria, a diagnosis was made of lipoid nephrosis. Steroid therapy over a 2-year period did not control the disease.

Renal amyloidosis in blacks.

S Afr Med J

October 1979

In a retrospective survey of renal amyloidosis in a large general hospital, only 7 cases were found. Patients generally presented with nephrotic syndrome and symptoms of fluid overload; hypertension on presentation was unusual. Renal failure was present in 5 out of 7 patients, and uraemia in 3.

All patients considered for regular haemodialysis, as well as all nurses recruited to work in the haemodialysis unit of Baragwanath Hospital, were tested for the presence of hepatitis-associated antigen (HBAg) and for antibody to hepatitis-associated antigen (HBAb). Thereafter they were tested at intervals as long as they remained in the unit. The prevalence of HBAg was 1,7% in nurses and 5,1% in patients.

Large surface area, high mass transfer dialysers have recently come into widespread use, and it has been shown that they promote the loss of large amounts of bicarbonate when acetate is used in the dialysate. The present study was designed to confirm these metabolic consequences and quantitatively to compare two commonly used dialysers in this respect. Simultaneous measurement of arterial and venous blood gases has shown that there is a significant reduction in bicarbonate, carbon dioxide tension, and pH of blood returning to the patient from the dialyser.

Trypsin treatment of solubilized coupling factor-latent ATPase from Mycobacterium phlei alters its subunit structure and functional properties. This coupling factor exhibits ATPase activity following trypsin treatment. Concurrently, both the ability of the enzyme to rebind to membranes depleted of coupling factor and its capacity for coupled phosphorylation are lost.

Xipamide, hydrochlorothiazide, and furosemide were given to normal volunteers on a double-blind basis. During maximal water diuresis, there was a reduction in free water clearance and an increase in osmolar clearance after administration of xipamide and hydrochlorothiazide, but not in the case of furosemide. During maximal hydropenia, both xipamide and hydrochlorothiazide increased free water reabosorption in a linear relationship to osmolar clearance, while furosemide increased osmolar clearance with little change in free water reabsorption.
