We present a concise, general, and efficient procedure for calculating the cluster integrals that relate thermodynamic virial coefficients to molecular interactions. The approach encompasses nonpairwise intermolecular potentials generated from quantum chemistry or other sources; a simple extension permits efficient evaluation of temperature and other derivatives of the virial coefficients. We demonstrate with a polarizable model of water.

We compute the vapor-liquid critical coordinates of a model of helium in which nuclear quantum effects are absent. We employ highly accurate pair and three-body potentials and calculate the critical parameters rigorously in two ways. Background: The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) strain exists in lines that contrast strongly in susceptibility to renal injury in hypertension. These inbred lines share common ancestry, and only 13% of their genomes arise from different ancestors.

Methods And Results: We used next gen sequencing to detect natural allelic variation in 5 genes of the immunoreceptor signaling pathway (IgH, Dok3, Src, Syk, and JunD) that arise from different ancestors in the injury-prone SHR-A3 and the resistant SHR-B2 lines.

Molecular changes that give rise to granulosa cell tumors of the ovary are not well understood. Previously, we showed that deletion in granulosa cells of the bone morphogenetic protein receptor-signaling transcription factors, Smad1 and Smad5, causes development of metastatic granulosa cell tumors that phenocopy the juvenile form of granulosa cell tumors (JGCTs) in humans. The TGFβ-SMAD2/3 pathway is active in JGCTs, but its role is unknown.

The interaction between IgG and Fc-γ receptors in glomeruli contributes to the development of several types of proteinuric glomerular disease, but the involvement of immunological mechanisms in hypertensive renal injury is incompletely understood. Here, we investigated serum IgG levels in SHR-A3 rats, which develop hypertensive injury, and compared them with the injury-resistant SHR-B2 line. At 18 weeks old, SHR-A3 rats had serum total IgG levels nearly twice those of SHR-B2 rats, although subclass IgG2b was undetectable in SHR-A3 rats compared with mean levels (± SEM) of 80.

A conditional developmental mutant of Mucor racemosus which is capable of oxidative energy metabolism is described. Unlike the wild-type strain the mutant was highly fermentative and exhibited the yeast morphology when grown aerobically in glucose-containing media. The high fermentative activity and yeast morphology under these conditions correlated well with maximal expression of glycolytic enzymes and with expression of some polypeptides characteristic of anaerobic growth.

The colicin Ib gene of the large low-copy-number plasmid Col Ib-P9 has been cloned into the plasmid vector pBR322. Observations of growth characteristics of strains carrying the cloned gene and analysis of insertion and deletion derivatives of the recombinant plasmid have led to the conclusion that colicin Ib production can occur without the colicin Ib immunity system. The direction of transcription for the colicin Ib gene was determined by use of an expression vector and subsequently confirmed by DNA-sequence analysis of the colicin Ib promoter.
