The presence of melatonin, a known animal hormone, has been confirmed in many evolutionary distant organisms, including higher plants. It is known that melatonin increases tolerance to stress factors as a wide spectrum antioxidant. Tolerant genotypes have generally higher melatonin content than sensitive ones, and exposure to stressful conditions is known to increase endogenous melatonin levels.

In this study, factors such as pH, temperature, carbon and nitrogen sources that affect mycelial growth of Hydnum repandum, a medicinal mushroom, were investigated.
