Background: Thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH) plays a pivotal role in various physiological mechanisms, including antioxidant defence, detoxification, apoptosis, regulation of enzyme activities and cellular signal transduction. TDH can be used as a biomarker to detect oxidative stress (OS) levels and ischemia status in the tissues. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery is a procedure associated with high oxidative stress.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if patients receiving rhomboid intercostal block (RIB) or pectoral nerve block (PECS) after unilateral modified radical mastectomy (MRM) use less opioids than those receiving local anesthetic infiltration.
  • Eighty-one female patients were randomly divided into three groups: RIB, PECS, and control (local infiltration), with assessments of tramadol usage, recovery quality, pain scores, and sleep quality in the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Results showed that both RIB and PECS groups had significantly lower tramadol consumption and better recovery quality and sleep compared to the control group, indicating these blocks are effective in managing pain post-MRM surgery.

The serratus posterior superior intercostal plane (SPSIP) block is a novel technique recently described for thoracic analgesia. This study presents two cases using this technique for postoperative pain after mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection. The SPSIP block was administered to the patients in the preoperative period as part of multimodal analgesia, and postoperative pain was monitored using the numeric rating scale (NRS).
