Article Synopsis
  • * Screening focuses on measuring thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine in dried blood samples from babies, but there’s no universal agreement on the ideal TSH threshold for diagnosis, although 8 mU/L is commonly accepted.
  • * This study, involving eight sets of twins, aimed to evaluate whether a TSH threshold of 8 mU/L affects growth and development; results showed no significant differences in outcomes between twins with TSH levels above and below this threshold.

Inflammatory cytokines are pivotal to immune responses. Upon cytokine exposure, cells enter an "alert state" that enhances their visibility to the immune system. Here, we identified an alert-state subpopulation of ribosomes defined by the presence of the P-stalk.

  • Boric acid (BA) is crucial for the metabolic function in plants, animals, and humans but has mixed effects on biological systems.
  • The study examined how different concentrations of BA in culture media affected mouse embryo quality and development, using superovulated C57Bl6/6j female mice.
  • Results showed that low doses of BA significantly improved blastocyst development rates and enhanced embryo cell numbers and biochemical parameters, indicating its positive role in embryo development.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is closely linked to chronic disorders. This study aims to explore the correlation between pediatric anemia and mitochondrial markers, specifically fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15), and nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). This study included 66 children, with 34 diagnosed with anemia and 32 in the healthy control group.

Background: There is a lack of literature on the length of the terminal ileum to be resected in right hemicolectomy for colon cancer. Therefore, we aimed to determine the mean ileal loop length and the effect of this variation on postoperative complications and long-term oncological outcomes in patients who underwent right hemicolectomy.

Methods: Right hemicolectomy surgeries performed for colon cancer in a tertiary care hospital between January 2011 and December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed from a prospective database.

Introduction: This study examines the health problems and healthcare needs of refugee and asylum-seeker children and aims to develop strategies for improvement.

Methods: Based on quantitative data from 448 refugee and asylum-seeker children and 222 non-refugee local children, this study was conducted at Düzce University, Department of Paediatrics, between 2010 and 2021. The refugee children originated from three countries: Iraq (n = 304), Syria (n = 101) and Afghanistan (n = 43).

Obesity is a major nutritional problem with an increasing prevalence among children and adolescents. The () gene encodes the UDP-glucuronosyl transferase enzyme, converting the toxic form of bilirubin to a soluble, nontoxic form. There are yet to be studies on the evaluation of the variant types detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS) and their effects on bilirubin levels in nonsyndromic obese children.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is caused by mutations in pyrin, a protein produced in innate immune cells that regulates the development of interleukin (IL)-1β by interacting with caspase-1 and other components of inflammasomes. Although overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines have been observed in FMF patients, no studies have been conducted on the role of Src family kinases (SFKs). The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of SFKs on the modulation of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and NLRP3 inflammasome in patients with FMF.

Objective: Previous studies have focused on the balance system's involvement in sleep deprivation or disorders. This study investigated how daily routine sleep quality affects the balance system of people without sleep deprivation or diagnosed sleep disorders.

Methods: The study included 45 participants with a BMI score of <25.

Introduction: The aims of the present study were to evaluate postural balance performance of the subjects on the time-restricted feeding (TRF) and reveal the effect of TRF on the vestibular system by comparing the results to those of traditional daily dietary (DD) condition.

Methods: Sixteen adults (3 males, 13 females; mean age: 25.4 ± 4 years) who had experienced at least 1 month of TRF were included in the study.

Boric acid (BA) is an essential trace element that is required to support the metabolic pathways in plants, humans, and animals. The present study investigates the in vitro development and quality of single-cell mouse embryos in a BA-added culture medium after cryopreservation using the solid-surface vitrification method. For this purpose, the pronuclear-stage embryos derived from superovulated C57Bl/6j mouse strains and the one-cell embryos were then cryopreserved using the solid-surface vitrification (SSV) method.

Probiotic microorganisms are increasing their interest today due to the benefits they provide to humans. Vinegar is the process of processing foods containing carbohydrates that can be fermented by acetic acid bacteria and yeasts. Hawthorn vinegar is also important in terms of amino acids, aromatic compounds, organic acids, vitamins and minerals it contains.

Objective: This study aimed to define the association between altitude and ticagrelor-associated dyspnea in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Methods: We studied consecutive patients with de novo ACS who were admitted to two centers at a low altitude (18 and 25 m, n = 65) and two centers at a high altitude (1313 and 1041 m, n = 136). We managed them with ticagrelor between May 2017 and September 2017.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate binaural auditory skills in bimodal and bilateral pediatric cochlear implant (CI) users with incomplete partition type-II (IP-II) and to reveal the effect of IP-II on performance by comparing the results to pediatric CI users with normal cochlear morphology.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: Tertiary referral center.

Introduction: Individuals with hearing loss have reduced hearing sensitivity and may not adequately process the temporal cues in acoustic signals. Cognitive skills that decrease with aging and hearing loss contribute negatively on the ability to understand speech. Hence, they may experience communication problems in noisy environments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess cochlear implant (CI) mapping parameters in users with inner ear malformation (IEM) and examine changes over time compared to those with normal cochlear anatomy.
  • A total of 118 CI users were analyzed at various time points post-surgery, focusing on parameters like impedance measurements, threshold levels (THR), most comfortable levels (MCL), pulse width (PW), and rates.
  • Results indicated significant differences in several mapping parameters between IEM users and control groups over time, suggesting that pediatric CI users with IEM require individualized fitting adjustments and more frequent mapping sessions.

Elongator is a multi-subunit protein complex bearing six different protein subunits, Elp1 to -6, that are highly conserved among eukaryotes. Elp2 is the second major subunit of Elongator and, together with Elp1 and Elp3, form the catalytic core of this essential complex. Pathogenic variants that affect the structure and function of the Elongator complex may cause neurodevelopmental disorders.
