Cerebral infarction following intravenous immunoglobulin therapy for Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy is used increasingly for different immune-mediated diseases, such as the Guillain-Barre syndrome. We report the case of a 55-year-old man who developed a cerebral infarction 2 days after completion of treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin for Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Effect of serotonergic antidepressant therapy on temperament and character scales in patients with chronic tension-type headache.

The purpose of the present study was to assess a group of patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) and control subjects using the personality questionnaire proposed by Cloninger and to determine possible changes in the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) patterns of CTTH patients after therapy with serotonergic antidepressants. Forty-five patients with CTTH filled out the TCI and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) before and after 4-month prophylactic therapy with serotonergic antidepressants. A total of 50 age-, sex- and education level-matched healthy subjects were selected as a control group.

Aggression and violence towards health care providers--a problem in Turkey?

Health care providers are increasingly concerned about the escalating incidence of verbal and physical abuse to healthcare staff. Factors, such as long wait in hospital areas, which lead to client frustration over an inability to obtain needed services promptly, are influencing these situations. Nonetheless, incidents of this nature can cause immense psychological harm as well as physical damage among medical employees.

The first Susac's syndrome case in Turkey.

Susac's syndrome is a vasospastic disease resulting from bilateral microangiopathy of the brain, cochlea and retina. It is characterized by encephalopathy, bilateral sensorineural fluctuating hearing loss and visual loss. It is very uncommon and usually affects women during young adulthood.

Prevalence of epilepsy in Bursa city center, an urban area of Turkey.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of epilepsy in the central district of Bursa, located in the western part of Turkey. The method used in this study was determined according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) on prevalence research in developing countries.

Methods: In total, 2116 individuals were interviewed between September 1, 2004, and February 1, 2005.

A study of depression and anxiety among doctors working in emergency units in Denizli, Turkey.

Background: Major work has been carried out on the psychological well-being of emergency room doctors in the US, Canada and in other developed countries, but little has been published regarding the same in the countries in economic transition.

Objective: To determine the level of, and the factors related to, depression and anxiety among doctors working in emergency units in Denizli, Turkey.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2004, using a sample of 192 doctors employed in emergency units in Pamukkale University Hospital, the City Hospital, the Social Security Hospital, private hospitals, citywide primary healthcare centres and 112 emergency services in Denizli, Turkey.

We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with no personal history of interest who presented to her physician with a plaque in the right infraumbilical region whose largest diameter measured nine centimeters. The clinical and histological diagnosis was Bowen's disease. She was treated with 5 % imiquimod cream, once a day, four times a week, for eight weeks, with an excellent response.

Neuromyelitis optica in patients with myasthenia gravis who underwent thymectomy.

Background: Myasthenia gravis (MG) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO, also known as Devic disease) are rare autoimmune disorders, with upper-limit prevalence estimates in the general population of 15 per 100,000 and 5 per 100,000, respectively. To our knowledge, an association between these diseases has not been previously reported.

Objectives: To describe 4 patients with MG who developed NMO after thymectomy and to analyze possible causes of apparent increased prevalence of NMO among patients with MG.

Intraoperative radiation therapy for retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcomas.

Treatment of retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcomas is a difficult clinical problem. Despite the improvement in resection rates in the most recent surgical series, local control still remains the main problem because of the high incidence of local recurrences after surgery. Postoperative radiation therapy has not been always successful because of dose-tolerance of surrounding normal structures, which prevent the delivery of adequate doses of radiation.

Violence toward health care workers in emergency departments in Denizli, Turkey.

This study sought to determine the frequency and types of violence that occurred during the previous year against health care workers in emergency departments in Denizli, Turkey, and to discern the views of workers on the prevention of such aggressive behavior. This study was conducted from March 1 to April 15, 2003, and included a group of 79 health care workers from the emergency departments of 3 hospitals in Denizli, namely, the Hospital of Pamukkale University Medical Faculty, the City Hospital of Denizli, and the Hospital of the Social Insurance Foundation. Data were collected from a self-administered questionnaire.

A case of Lemierre's syndrome following Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Lemierre's syndrome, or necrobacillosis, is a life-threatening septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. The causative organism is Fusobacterium necrophorum. Here we report a case of Lemierre's syndrome in a young male and describe the clinical presentations and treatment.

[Approaches to distal humeral fractures in adults and comparison of treatment results].

Objectives: We compared the results of surgical techniques used in the treatment of distal humeral fractures.

Methods: The study included 22 patients (15 men, 7 women; mean age 52 years; range 21 to 80 years) who were treated for closed distal humeral fractures. The fractures were classified according to the Müller's classification (18 type 3, 4 type 4) and Mehne-Matta's classification of intraarticular fractures.

Methods: The study included 69 children (19 girls, 50 boys; mean age 6.1 years; range 2 to 12 years) with displaced (>2 mm) lateral condyle fractures of the humerus.

The impact of migraine on epilepsy: a prospective prognosis study.

The effect of migraine on the prognosis of epilepsy has not been reported. The aim of this prospective 5-10-year follow-up study was to examine some outcome measures and the cumulative probability of being seizure-free in epilepsy patients with migraine, and to compare their results with those of epilepsy patients without migraine. Fifty-nine patients (40 women; mean age 25 years) were diagnosed with both epilepsy and migraine (EM group).

Tc-99m HMPAO brain SPECT findings in mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease: correlation with event related potentials.

We investigated whether brain SPECT findings show any differences between patients with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to compare results with event related potentials (ERPs). Twenty-two patients with mild to moderate AD diagnosed according to NINCDS-ADRDA criteria and 10 age-matched control subjects were included in this prospective study. All subjects underwent ERP recordings and Tc-99m HMPAO brain SPECT study.

Determination of operation time in colorectal diseases: preoperative chemotherapy application.
