44 patients with candidal vaginitis participated in a trial using a new formulation of a mepartricin-sodium lauryl sulfate complex for local administration (dosage schedule: one 25,000-unit vaginal tablet (SPA-S-222) daily for 6 days). Microbiological examination revealed an 88.6% cure rate (samples tested negative) at the end of treatment and a 90.

At 1 and 3 weeks after treatment, 29 of 30 and 18 of 19 patients, respectively, who had been given tinidazole were cured, as compared to 16 of 27 and 6 of 14 patients, respectively, who had been given oral placebo together with a vaginal cream with or without sulfonamides (p less than 0.01 and p = 0.

Gardnerella vaginalis, anaerobic gram-negative bacilli, anaerobic gram-negative and gram-positive cocci were all associated with non-specific vaginitis (p less than 0.001), whereas lactobacilli occurred less frequently in non-specific vaginitis than in controls (p less than 0.

From an open comparative multicentric trial it became clear that econazole was an active and well-tolerated agent for the treatment of vulvo-vaginal mycoses.
