Reformulation of snacks offered to children and adolescents at school kiosks: is this strategy enough or just the tip of the iceberg?

Several studies have reported high overweight and obesity incidence among schoolchildren and adolescents, who mostly consume packaged snacks with critical nutrients exceeding the criteria of international profiling systems during school breaks. Then, the objectives of this work were to reformulate a snack consumed by Argentinian schoolchildren and adolescents (aged 6-13 years) to decrease its critical nutrient contents and to determine if this product would still be accepted. Chocolate chip vanilla cookies were selected for reformulation considering each recommended cut-off point for critical nutrients, since a prohibition of products with warning octagons being offered at schools would come into effect in Argentina.

This article discusses a rare case of coexistent meningiomas and Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC). PFBC is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by brain calcifications and a variety of neuropsychiatric symptoms and signs, with pathogenic variants in specific genes. The study explores the potential link between PFBC and meningiomas, highlighting shared features like intralesional calcifications and common genes such as MEA6.

End-to-End Emulation of LoRaWAN Architecture and Infrastructure in Complex Smart City Scenarios Exploiting Containers.

In a LoRaWAN network, the backend is generally distributed as Software as a Service (SaaS) based on container technology, and recently, a containerized version of the LoRaWAN node stack is also available. Exploiting the disaggregation of LoRaWAN components, this paper focuses on the emulation of complex end-to-end architecture and infrastructures for smart city scenarios, leveraging on lightweight virtualization technology. The fundamental metrics to gain insights and evaluate the scaling complexity of the emulated scenario are defined.

Middle-age abolishes cardioprotection conferred by thioredoxin-1 in mice.

Thioredoxin-1 (Trx1) has cardioprotective effects on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, although its role in ischemic postconditioning (PostC) in middle-aged mice is not understood. This study aimed to evaluate if combining two cardioprotective strategies, such as Trx1 overexpression and PostC, could exert a synergistic effect in reducing infarct size in middle-aged mice. Young or middle-aged wild-type mice (Wt), transgenic mice overexpressing Trx1, and dominant negative (DN-Trx1) mutant of Trx1 mice were used.

Effects of alpha-tocopherol antioxidant on fracture strength and adhesion of endodontically treated teeth restored after dental bleaching.

This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of alpha-tocopherol in gel form on fracture strength, hybrid layer formation, and microtensile bond strength of endodontically treated teeth bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide (H O ). Sixty bovine incisors were randomized into one of six groups (n = 10 incisors per group) defined by the interventions carried out after endodontic treatment. In the control group, no additional intervention was carried out, while all teeth in the five intervention groups were bleached with 40% H O and subsequently treated with alpha-tocopherol at concentrations of 15% (15AT), 20% (20AT), or 25% (25AT), with 10% sodium ascorbate (10SA), or with nothing (40HP).

Clinical performance of sealants under different humidity control conditions: a split-mouth 1-year randomized trial.

Purpose: Sealants are an effective method of prevention and treatment for early caries lesions. This study analyzed the 1-year clinical performance of resin-based and ionomeric sealants applied to permanent teeth under different humidity conditions.

Methods: The investigation was a triple-blind randomized clinical trial (RCT) with a four arms split-mouth design, divided according to the sealant protocol: (1) Resin-based sealant applied with rubber dam isolation, (2) Resin-based sealant applied with cotton rolls isolation, (3) Ionomeric sealant applied with rubber dam isolation and (4) Ionomeric sealant applied with cotton rolls isolation.

Surface and intra-pulpal temperature variation during tooth whitening photoactivated with LED/laser.

This study evaluated the variation of surface and intra-pulpal temperature, during bleaching protocol, using LED/laser. The 35% (HP35), 15% (HP15) and 6% (HP6) gels were used associated with LED/laser applied every 1 min for 30 min in a human canine. The evaluation of surface temperature variation (∆Ts) was performed using a pHmeter and the intra-pulpal temperature variation (∆Ti) was performed using a digital thermometer, at times of 1-, 5-, 10- 15- and 30-min.

Objective: This study evaluated the effects of antioxidants, 10% sodium ascorbate (SA) or 20% alpha-tocopherol (AT), after post-space irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite +17% EDTA (SH) or 1% peracetic acid (PA) on the adhesive interface after glass fiber post cementation.

Report of two sisters with Netherton syndrome successfully treated with dupilumab and review of the literature.

Different monoclonal antibodies have been used for the treatment of Netherton's syndrome (NS); secukinumab (anti-IL17A), infliximab (anti-TNF-α), ustekinumab (anti p40 subunit of IL-12 and IL-23), omalizumab (anti-IgE), and dupilumab (anti-IL4 and IL13). We report two sisters with severe NS who were treated with omalizumab in one and with secukinumab in the other. In view of the therapeutic failure, treatment with dupilumab was started in both sisters.

Ultrasound Measurements and Physical Fitness of Elite Youth Basketball Players.

The countermovement jump, the V-cut test, the muscle thickness and the adjacent subcutaneous fat thickness of the gastrocnemius medialis and rectus femoris are important physiological indicators for success in basketball. The aims of this study were to evaluate between-age-category and between-gender differences in these indicators and examine the relationships between physical tests and ultrasound measurements. The measurements were recorded in a sample of 131 elite basketball players (66 males) who played in three age-categories (U14, U16, or U18).

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cleansing protocols to remove sealer residues using different cleaning strategies and the effect of bond strength of two universal adhesives to dentin impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer.

Materials And Methods: Fifty bovine dentin specimens were impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer containing calcium hydroxide (Sealer Plus) and submitted to cleansing protocols (n = 10): negative control (NC), positive control (PC), 95% ethanol (ET), xylol (XI), and amyl acetate (AA). Specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Relationship of Food Intolerance 2 Years After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery for Obesity with Masticatory Efficiency and Protein Consumption.

Background: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is among the most performed bariatric surgery techniques. One known complication of RYGB surgery is food intolerance, which may limit the intake of protein.

Experimental data acquisition and mathematical model for soluble protein extraction from Argentinian extruded expeller soybean meal.

Extruded expeller soybean meal is a byproduct of the soybean oil extraction, which is frequently used in Argentina by animal feed millers. In this work, the soluble protein extraction stage is studied as the first step of a challenge project in order to obtain a soy protein product from this byproduct. Extruded expeller meals from 4 different Argentinian processing plants were used to obtain 41 experimental data sets, using 1 to 3 consecutive extraction cycles operating at temperatures from 55 to 65 °C.

An intravascular magnetic wire for the high-throughput retrieval of circulating tumour cells in vivo.

The detection and analysis of rare blood biomarkers is necessary for early diagnosis of cancer and to facilitate the development of tailored therapies. However, current methods for the isolation of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) or nucleic acids present in a standard clinical sample of only 5-10 ml of blood provide inadequate yields for early cancer detection and comprehensive molecular profiling. Here, we report the development of a flexible magnetic wire that can retrieve rare biomarkers from the subject's blood in vivo at a much higher yield.

Omentopexy in Sleeve Gastrectomy Reduces Early Gastroesophageal Reflux Symptoms.

Introduction: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is one of the surgical procedures indicated in the treatment of obesity. The occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in the postoperative period of this surgery is related to a reduction in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone and the presence of gastric residual fundus (RF) associated with increased gastric intraluminal pressure. Fixation of the remaining gastric reservoir to the gastrosplenic and gastrocolic ligaments (omentopexy) has emerged as a technical option to avoid or decrease GER in the postoperative period of LSG.
