Background: In reconstructive surgeries, iliac crest bone graft harvesting is commonly preferred. The pain experienced after surgery at the anterior iliac crest (AIC) donor site might be more intense compared to the pain at the primary surgical area where the graft is placed. To address this issue, we defined a novel technique called the anterior iliac block (AIB), which can provide analgesia with lower volumes.

In the early 2000s, low dimensional ferroelectric systems were predicted to have topologically nontrivial polar structures, such as vortices or skyrmions, depending on mechanical or electrical boundary conditions. A few variants of these structures have been experimentally observed in thin film model systems, where they are engineered by balancing electrostatic charge and elastic distortion energies. However, the measurement and classification of topological textures for general ferroelectric nanostructures have remained elusive, as it requires mapping the local polarization at the atomic scale in three dimensions.

Identification of new druggable protein targets remains the key challenge in the current antimalarial development efforts. Here we used mass-spectrometry-based cellular thermal shift assay (MS-CETSA) to identify potential targets of several antimalarials and drug candidates. We found that falcilysin (FLN) is a common binding partner for several drug candidates such as MK-4815, MMV000848, and MMV665806 but also interacts with quinoline drugs such as chloroquine and mefloquine.

Research Question: Do embryos that undergo a thaw, biopsy and re-vitrification (TBR) for pre-implantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) have different ploidy and transfer outcomes compared with fresh biopsied embryos?

Design: Retrospective cohort study of all embryos that underwent the following procedures: fresh biopsy for PGT-A (fresh biopsy); embryos that were warmed, biopsied for PGT-A and re-vitrified (single biopsy TBR); embryos with a no signal result after initial biopsy that were subsequently warmed, biopsied and re-vitrified (double biopsy TBR). The patients who underwent transfers of those embryos at a single academic institution between March 2013 and December 2021 were also studied.

Results: About 30% of embryos planned for TBR underwent attrition.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focused on understanding the gut microbiota composition in patients with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) after the Fontan procedure, to find potential predictive biomarkers for the disease's onset or activity.
  • - Researchers examined 16 patients with active PLE and 20 without (non-PLE), using genetic sequencing of their fecal samples to analyze gut bacteria diversity and composition.
  • - Findings showed that patients with active PLE had significantly lower gut microbiota diversity compared to those in remission or without PLE, suggesting that changes in gut bacteria could indicate PLE severity.

The processing of information regarding the sex and reproductive state of conspecific individuals is critical for successful reproduction and survival in males. Generally, male mice exhibit a preference toward the odor of sexually receptive (RF) over nonreceptive females (XF) or gonadally intact males (IM). Previous studies suggested the involvement of estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) expressed in the medial amygdala (MeA) in male preference toward RF.
