Levothyroxine-induced serum free thyroxine response following radioactive iodine administration in patients thyroidectomized for differentiated thyroid cancer: A randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: Patients undergoing thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) may require 131-radioactive iodine (RAI) administration for remnant ablation or disease treatment. After ingestion, RAI resides within the gastrointestinal tract potentially leading to mucosal damage and abnormalities in the absorption of levothyroxine (LT4). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether serum FT4 peak, induced by a LT4 challenge, changes according to the LT4 formulation (solid or liquid) in both RAI and non-RAI-treated DTC patients.

[COVID-19 experience in a private institution in Buenos Aires during the first month of the pandemic: 26 cases].

The first case of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in Argentina was reported in Buenos Aires on March 3rd, 2020, in a patient who arrived from Milan. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics and course of illness of patients infected with Covid-19 that were hospitalized in a private clinical setting during March 2020. Sixty three patients suspected of COVID-19 infection, were admitted to our hospital during March 2020.

Comparison of Procalcitonin Assays on KRYPTOR and LIAISON XL Analyzers.

Our laboratory performs procalcitonin (PCT) assays on a Brahms KRYPTOR analyzer with the Brahms PCT sensitive Kryptor kit. In this study, we wanted to compare the assays obtained in this way with the ones performed on the LIAISON XL. From January to May 2017, 171 samples were analyzed, of which 65 from female patients (age: 22-98 years) and 106 from male patients (age: 16-97 years).

Methods: During an "ad interim" analysis on serum FT4 after 200 mcg liquid LT4 consumption while fasting in thyroidectomized thyroid cancer patients, we found that seven subjects fortuitously took liquid LT4 at breakfast.

Methods: Diazyme PCT is a latex-enhanced immunoturbidimetric assay, developed for use on laboratory instrumentations with capability of reading absorbance at 600 nm. This analytical evaluation included the assessment of limit of blank (LOB), limit of detection (LOD), functional sensitivity, imprecision, linearity, carryover, and method comparison between Diazyme PCT and Kryptor PCT on 129 routine serum inpatient samples.

KIT/PDGFRA wild-type (WT) gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) showed a response rate to imatinib ranging from 0 to 25%. Nilotinib is a new-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor that has demonstrated clinical activity in pretreated GIST patients. At present, no correlation between nilotinib activity and clinical/pathological/molecular features is available.

Approximately 10%-15% of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) in adults do not harbor any mutation in the KIT or PDGFRA genes (ie, KIT/PDGFRA wild-type GISTs). Recently, mutations in SDHB and SDHC (which encode succinate dehydrogenase subunits B and C, respectively) but not in SDHA and SDHD (which encode subunits A and D, respectively) were identified in KIT/PDGFRA wild-type GISTs. To search for novel pathogenic mutations, we sequenced the tumor transcriptome of two young adult patients who developed sporadic KIT/PDGFRA wild-type GISTs by using a massively parallel sequencing approach.

Preclinical evaluation of KIT/PDGFRA and mTOR inhibitors in gastrointestinal stromal tumors using small animal FDG PET.

Background: Primary and secondary drug resistance to imatinib and sunitinib in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) has led to a pressing need for new therapeutic strategies such as drug combinations. Most GISTs are caused by mutations in the KIT receptor, leading to upregulated KIT tyrosine kinase activity. Imatinib and nilotinib directly inhibit the kinase activity of KIT, while RAD001 (everolimus) inhibits mTOR.

[Pulmonary-renal syndrome].
