The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive set of biological tests to assess the biomedical potential of novel osteochondral scaffolds with methods proposed to comply with the 3Rs principle, focusing here on a biphasic Curdlan-based osteochondral scaffold as a promising model biomaterial. experiments include the evaluation of cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and genotoxicity referring to ISO standards, the assessment of the viability and proliferation of human chondrocytes and osteoblasts, and the estimation of inflammation after direct contact of biomaterials with human macrophages. experiments include assessments of the response of the surrounding osteochondral tissue after incubation with the implanted biomaterial.

The single nucleotide polymorphism in NOD2 (rs2066847) is associated with conditions that may predispose to the development of gastrointestinal disorders, as well as the known BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants classified as risk factors in many cancers. In our study, we analyzed these variants in a group of patients with pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer to clarify their role in pancreatic disease development. The DNA was isolated from whole blood samples of 553 patients with pancreatitis, 83 patients with pancreatic cancer, 44 cases of other pancreatic diseases, and 116 healthy volunteers.

Introduction: Despite clear, relatively easy-to-use guidance, many clinicians find the perioperative management of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) challenging. Inappropriate antithrombotic management can delay procedures and lead to bleeding or thromboembolic complications.Aim: We aimed to describe perioperative management practices related to planned procedures regarding DOACs in accordance with the applicable guidelines of cardiological and surgical societies.

Article Synopsis
 • Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a serious and increasingly common health issue, with a 63% rise in incidence globally over the past two decades, primarily caused by factors like gallstones, alcohol, and genetics.
 • A study analyzed genetic material from 301 AP patients and 184 healthy controls to identify mutations in specific gene regions, revealing several novel mutations linked to AP risks and variations in the carboxypeptidase gene.
 • The research found certain mutations associated with an increased risk of developing AP, while others appeared to provide protective effects, indicating that genetic variability significantly influences the likelihood of AP onset.

Purpose: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is quite a safe procedure, as only about 2% of cases result in clinically significant postoperative complications. The occurrence of conversion and postoperative complications is associated with prolonged hospitalization and higher perioperative mortality. Some parameters assessed in preoperative laboratory tests are used to predict the risk of conversion and clinically significant postoperative complications.

A properly functioning peritoneal catheter is an essential element of effective peritoneal dialysis (PD). Currently, there are three techniques available for PD catheter placement, which include open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and percutaneous catheter placement (PCP). Currently, no particular catheter placement approach has been proven with certainty to provide superior outcomes.

Background: The evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has been observed from the very beginning of the fight against COVID-19, some mutations are indicators of potentially dangerous variants of the virus. However, there is no clear association between the genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2 and the severity of COVID-19. We aimed to analyze the genetic variability of RdRp in correlation with different courses of COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
 • - The study investigates the relationship between the NOS2 gene polymorphism rs2297518 and colorectal cancer (CRC), focusing on how it may differ between right-sided and left-sided colon cancers as well as rectal cancers.
 • - Researchers analyzed 199 CRC patients and 120 controls using a TaqMan genotyping assay to assess the frequency of the minor allele A in the NOS2 genotype across various tumor locations.
 • - Findings indicate that the minor allele A is significantly more common in right-sided CRC compared to left-sided and rectal cancers, suggesting that this genetic variant plays a role in the tumor's localization and development.

Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTI), among which the main etiological factor is uropathogenic (UPEC, ), remain an important issue for clinicians. The aim of the study was to demonstrate clear differences in the pathogenic properties of urine-derived compared to other extraintestinal clinical isolates (derived from: blood, lower respiratory tracts, sputum, reproductive tract, body fluids, perianal pus, other pus, wound, postoperative wound and other sources).

Methods: The collection of 784 isolates was collected from various materials of hospitalized patients.

Article Synopsis
 • There is a lack of discharge protocols for acute pancreatitis (AP) patients, which the Hungarian Pancreatic Study Group (HPSG) aims to address with a new, validated protocol based on laboratory data and symptoms.
 • An international survey revealed that 87.5% of participating medical centers do not have discharge protocols, but those that do see shorter hospital stays and lower readmission rates.
 • The HPSG discharge protocol resulted in the lowest average length of hospital stay and demonstrated safety through a low readmission rate, highlighting the need for developing and validating more standardized discharge protocols for AP care.

Background: Despite advances in medicine, acute pancreatitis remains a disorder that is associated with a high mortality rate. The objective of this study was to analyze in-hospital mortality in patients hospitalized with acute pancreatitis.

Methods: A prospective analysis of patients hospitalized with acute pancreatitis in a single surgical center was performed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the persistent changes in microvascular parameters based on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 bilateral pneumonia. The case-control prospective study was carried out among 49 patients with COVID-19 and 45 healthy age- and gender-matched 2 and 8 months after hospital discharge. We found a significantly decreased vessel density (VD) in superficial capillary plexus (SCP) in COVID-19 patients.

Objectives: Determine whether introital pelvic floor sonography with transvaginal probe (PFS-TV) can be an independent method in the diagnosis of genuine stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and to create a ultrasonographic diagnostic model to objectify diagnostic process.

Material And Methods: The study involved 315 patients with a history of urinary incontinence problems. Based on the clinical examination and urodynamic examination, the final diagnosis was made.

GST (glutathione S-transferases) are capable of influencing glucose homeostasis, probably through regulation of the response to oxidant stress. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between GSTP1 gene polymorphism and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in type two diabetic (T2D) patients. A total of 307 T2D patients were included.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for almost three years, and so far, many preventive and therapeutic strategies have been developed. The issue of subsequent booster vaccinations is currently being discussed. We aimed to analyze how the third dose of vaccination against COVID-19 correlates with the dynamics of IgG anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody levels in a group of healthy people.

Cholecystolithiasis is among the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders requiring surgical intervention, and iatrogenic damage to the bile tree is a severe complication. We aimed to present the frequency of bile duct injuries and how our facility handles these complications. We retrospectively analyzed bile duct injuries in patients undergoing surgery.

The paper presents the results of clinical trials and meta-analyses regarding the closing time of: ileostomy (protective) after primary colorectal resection with anastomosis and colostomy - after Hartman's surgery. Rectal cancer surgery and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) in inflammatory bowel diseases often involves an ileostomy (temporary protective, preventive), which in a significant proportion of cases is eliminated at different times from the initial surgery. There is a discussion in the literature regarding the selection of the appropriate time of stoma closure, taking into account the experience of many clinical centers.
