Introduction: Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition affecting multiple sensorimotor and cognitive systems. The rat model exhibits vocal, cognitive, and limb use deficits seen in idiopathic PD. We sought to measure glucose metabolism in brain regions in and wild type (WT) rats, and to associate these to measures of ultrasonic vocalization, cognition, and limb use behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the outcomes of simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants in 298 Type I diabetes (T1D) and 47 Type II diabetes (T2D) patients from 2006-2017, focusing on graft rejection and complications.
  • The findings revealed no significant differences in graft survival, rejection rates, infections, or surgical complications between T1D and T2D recipients.
  • However, T2D patients showed a lower incidence of donor-specific antibodies (DSA) at one year post-transplant compared to T1D patients.

Introduction: Liver transplant recipients are at a heightened risk for oropharyngeal dysphagia; identification of those who are at high risk for postoperative dysphagia could reduce hospital costs and length of stay. We sought to identify predictors of dysphagia, in a large cohort of patients who underwent liver transplantation.

Methods: Electronic medical records were queried for patients undergoing liver transplantation, who underwent instrumental swallowing evaluations.

Existing literature offers conflicting conclusions about whether early acute cellular rejection influences long-term outcomes in liver transplantation. We retrospectively collected donor and recipient data on all adult, first-time liver transplants performed at a single center between 2008 and 2020. We divided this population into two cohorts based on the presence of early biopsy-proven acute cellular rejection (EBPR) within the first 90 days post-transplant and compared outcomes between the groups.

Purpose: Understand how weekly monetary incentives for dietary tracking and/or weight loss impact 6-month weight loss behavioral adherence.

Design: Secondary analysis of participants randomized to one of four conditions in a behavioral weight loss intervention: incentives for dietary tracking, incentives for weight loss, both, or none.

Setting: Participants were asked to self-weigh at least twice weekly, log food and drink in a mobile application five days weekly, and attend bi-weekly, group-based classes.

Background: Swallowing impairments resulting from stroke have few rehabilitative options. Prior evidence suggests lingual strengthening exercise may provide some benefit, but more randomized controlled trials are required. The purpose of this study was to examine efficacy of progressive lingual resistance training on lingual pressure generative capacity and swallowing outcomes for individuals with dysphagia after stroke.

Early motor and non-motor signs of Parkinson disease (PD) include dysphagia, gastrointestinal dysmotility, and constipation. However, because these often manifest prior to formal diagnosis, the study of PD-related swallow and GI dysfunction in early stages is difficult. To overcome this limitation, we used the Pink1-/- rat, a well-established early-onset genetic rat model of PD to assay swallowing and GI motility deficits.

Aim: Immunosuppressed patients are more likely to fail nonoperative management of acute diverticulitis and have more postoperative complications than the immunocompetent. Transplant recipients form a subcategory among the immunosuppressed with unique challenges. The aim of this work is to report 30-day postoperative complications after colectomy for acute diverticulitis and success rates of nonoperative management in pre- and post-transplant patients.

Background: Studies of migraine surgery have relied on quantitative, patient-reported measures like the Migraine Headache Index (MHI) and validated surveys to study the outcomes and impact of headache surgery. It is unclear whether a single metric or a combination of outcomes assessments is best suited to do so.

Methods: All patients who underwent headache surgery had an MHI calculated and completed the Headache Impact Test, the Migraine Disability Assessment Test, the Migraine-Specific Quality-of-Life Questionnaire, and an institutional ad hoc survey preoperatively and postoperatively.

Introduction: Anal dysplasia is a growing health concern that over time can result in squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) of the anus. In this study, we compare a topical versus systemic (oral) administration of LY3023414, a dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor, to prevent anal carcinogenesis in a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) mouse model of anal cancer.

Materials And Methods: transgenic mice were used to model HPV-induced anal carcinogenesis.

The artemisinin family of compounds is cytopathic in certain cancer cell lines that are positive for human papillomaviruses (HPV) and can potentially drive the regression of dysplastic lesions. We evaluated the efficacy of topical dihydroartemisinin (DHA) on cervical dysplasia and anal dysplasia in two papillomavirus mouse models: transgenic mice, which express HPV16 oncogenes; and immunodeficient NOD/SCID gamma (NSG) mice infected with papillomavirus (MmuPV1). Mice started treatment with DHA at 25 weeks of age () or 20 weeks post infection (MmuPV1-infected), when the majority of mice are known to have papillomavirus-induced low- to high-grade dysplasia.
