Compounds capable of inhibiting the efflux pump mechanism are a promising alternative against bacterial resistance because, when combined with antibiotics, they can increase the effectiveness of these drugs by inhibiting active efflux. Elaiophylin, derived from Streptomyces hygroscopicus, is a natural antibiotic that exhibits a variety of biological activities, including antibacterial activity. However, its potential as an inhibitor of the bacterial efflux mechanism has not been investigated.

Zymomonas mobilis have characteristics that classify it as probiotic. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of regular consumption of fermented broth of this strain on the intestinal function of individuals with changes in intestinal transit. This is a randomized, descriptive and quantitative clinical trial, a sample composed of undergraduate students from a university center in Caruaru.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause cell damage and death. To reverse these effects, cells produce substances such as reduced glutathione (GSH) that serve as substrates for antioxidant enzymes. One way to combat microbial resistance includes nullifying the effect of glutathione in microbial cells, causing them to die from oxidative stress.

L-asparaginase is an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing the substrate asparagine in aspartic acid and ammonia. Due to this mechanism of action observed, L-asparaginase is widely used in the treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, since these cells use asparagine for their survival. Because it is frequently used as an antineoplastic, it is necessary to evaluate its genotoxic effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Four isolates of endophytic fungi (Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloesporioides, Glomerella cingulata, and Nigrospora sphaerica) were studied for their genetic characteristics.
  • These fungi have been deposited in the University Recife Mycologia (URM) culture collection at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco.
  • The research focused on analyzing the fungal genes ITS 1 and 4 (5.8 S region) and assessing their ability to produce taxol, a significant compound used in cancer treatment.

The selection of new microorganisms able to produce antimicrobial compounds is hoped for to reduce their production costs and the side effects caused by synthetic drugs. Clavulanic acid is a β-lactam antibiotic produced by submerged culture, which is widely used in medicine as a powerful inhibitor of β-lactamases, enzymes produced by bacteria resistant to antibiotics such penicillin and cephalosporin. The purpose of this work was to select the best clavulanic acid producer among strains of Streptomyces belonging to the Microorganism Collection of the Department of Antibiotics of the Federal University of Pernambuco (DAUFPE).
