Evidence has been sought for a genetically determined predisposition among children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) who are also at particular risk for the development of inflammatory eye disease.45 unrelated Caucasian patients (41 female) with early-onset pauciarticular JRA were human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types. 28 of the study group were found to be HLA-DRw5 compared with 16 of 84 controls (X(2), 24.

Two genetic markers, HLA-Bw35 and HLA-B8, are found to be associated with "febrile" or "systemic" onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Evidence is presented that JRA patients are probably heterogeneous with respect to these antigens.

One series consisted of peptides of the general sequence (Gly)x-Arg-Arg-(Gly)y-Ala-Ser-Leu-Gly in which x + y = 6. The other series consisted of peptides of the sequence (Gly)x-Lys-Arg-(Gly)y-Ala-Ser-Leu-Gly in which x + y was again equal to 6.

The substrate specificities of cyclic GMP-dependent and cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases have been compared by kinetic analysis using synthetic peptides as substrates. Both enzymes catalyzed the transfer of phosphate from ATP to calf thymus histone H2B, as well as to two synthetic peptides, Arg-Lys-Arg-Ser32-Arg-Lys-Glu and Arg-Lys-Glu-Ser36-Tyr-Ser-Val, corresponding to the amino acid sequences around serine 32 and serine 36 in histone H2B. Serine 38 in the latter peptide was not phosphorylated by either enzyme.

The prediction was that unintentional harm-doers would be more likely to make restitution by doing a favor for a stigmatized victim than for a nonstigmatized one. In Experiment 1 it was upheld for black versus white victims.

The procedures described (in the miniprint supplement) for the preparation, purification, and characterization of these components circumvented the use of diethyl ether which obscured effects of lipid effectors because of contaminants presumed to be ether peroxides which were stimulatory to the cyclase. Addition of prostaglandin endoperoxides or fatty acid hydroperoxides to the reaction mixture led to a time-dependent activation of guanylate cyclase activity; 2.

A recently developed rabbit model for osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus was used to compare the results of treatment with HBO, cephalothin, a combination of both, or no treatment. Cultures of bone were positive in 10 (91%) of 11 control animals (untreated), five (36%) of 14 animals treated with HBO, eight (47%) of 17 treated with cephalothin, and six (40%) of 15 treated with HBO plus cephalothin.

In the first experiment a wheelchair-bound or normal confederate was either friendly and achievement oriented (positive condition) or caustic and apathetic (negative condition) while administering verbal tasks to subjects who were later asked to help the confederate. Contrary to prediction, subjects offered more help to the normal than to the disabled tester in the positive condition, and showed the reverse pattern in the negative condition.

Symptoms after vaccination were somewhat more frequent in the patients than in the normal subjects; however, all symptoms were minor and no major flare of illness occurred. No significant induction or increase of pre-existing autoantibodies among the patients was detected after vaccination.

Eight healthy medical studients and four renal transplant patients had blood sampled two or three times hourly throughout EEG monitored nocturnal sleep. This was carried out on the healthy subjects for a total of 12 nights without medication (control nights asleep), a total of 12 nights following 40 mg of flucortolone the previous morning, and a total of 6 nights with similar blood sampling when sleep was prevented (control nights awake). Four renal transplant patients who were receiving long-term therapy with prednisolone were similarly studied (total of 7 nights asleep).

The genetically determined electrophoretic variants of C6 were evaluated in all family members. Seven individuals were found who did not have the variant found in the serum of the parent from whom they inherited the deficiency.
