We describe the clinical features of Robinow syndrome in the first child of a consanguineous Turkish couple. This observation supports the view that severe vertebral anomalies are a feature of the autosomal-recessive form of Robinow syndrome.

The buoyant density in rapidly growing Streptococcus faecium 9790 cells varies over the cell cycle, in contrast to the density in Escherichia coli. Buoyant density in S. faecium was measured by using Percoll (Pharmacia Fine Chemicals, Piscataway, N.

In a 41-year-old VII-gravida, I-para, the husband's reciprocal translocation of the chromosomes 1 and 18 as well as a partial identity of the marital partner in the HLA-system may have been the underlying causes for five abortions. In the 7th pregnancy, a prenatal chromosome analysis was performed as well as an immunotherapy with paternal lymphocytes, when uterine bleeding occurred. After termination of bleeding, the pregnancy continued without any complication.

Segregation was studied by measuring the positions of autoradiographic grain clusters in chains formed from single cells containing on average less than one radiolabeled chromosome strand. The degree to which chromosomal and cell wall material cosegregated was quantified by using the methods of S. Cooper and M.

Three polymorphic DNA markers linked to the locus of Norrie disease were used for indirect genotype analysis in a ten-wk-old fetus at risk for the disease. When haplotypes of the family members and the estimated recombination frequency between Norrie gene and each of the DNA marker loci DXS7, DXS84, and DXS146 were taken into account, the risk that the fetus had inherited the mutation was about 1%.

We report on the third pregnancy of a 41-year-old patient with familial hypercholesterolemia. After preceding angina pectoris symptoms she had her first myocardial infarction at an age of 37. Thereafter she had no complaints under medicinal and dietary treatment.

[The acardius amorphus].

Geburtshilfe Frauenheilkd

June 1988

We report on an acardius in a 47-year old tenthgravida. The postnatally detected acardius did not cause any obstetrical problems. The following theory seems to be the most suitable explanation for the development of an acardius: in a twin (multiple) pregnancy with blood vessel anastomoses between both twins, a twin with a haemodynamic advantage supplies the other one with oxygen-deprived blood; the latter thus becomes an acardius.

We report on a postpartally decreased girl with several malformations: turricephalus, deep root of the nose, prognathism, choanal atresia, low-set dysplastic ears, fourth additional blood vessel originating from the thoracic aorta. Nearly 70% of the placenta consisted of multiple chorioangiomas. A possible correlation between fetal malformations and placental chorangiomas is discussed.

The addition of ciliated protozoa to aquatic microcosms and bench-scale sewage treatment plants increases decomposition rates. This is surprising, inasmuch as protozoa consume bacteria, which are the primary decomposers. One possible mechanism of the increase in decomposition rate is the direct consumption of dissolved organic matter by protozoa that are feeding primarily on bacteria.

We describe a postmenopausal woman with 45,XO/46,XX/47,XXX mosaicism who presented with a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumour and a past history of habitual abortion. The cytogenetic finding is discussed in relation to the etiology of the tumour and of the recurrent abortions.

We report on a 13 years old girl with Rett syndrome (autism, dementia, ataxia and loss of purposeful hand use in girls). The Rett syndrome is unexpectedly frequent (1:15,000 in 1-14 years old girls). The diagnosis is based solely upon clinical development observation.

In man gymnemic acid is able to abolish the sweet taste. Also in man, the neural correlate of that effect is a disappearance of the response to sweet stimuli in the taste nerves, as indicated by the observations of Diamant et al. (1965).

Colonies of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells growing on agar exhibit changes in colony morphology and size in response to extremely low doses of hormones and growth factors. Computer-aided densitometric scanning of photographs of these colonies allows the quantitative measurement of these morphological changes. Correlation of these changes with dosage for a variety of growth effectors is a sensitive assay for the effects of these factors, both alone and in combination, and should be useful in comparing effects of agents with similar biological activities and in the search for variant cell types with altered responsiveness.

We investigated the effects of the well-known mutagenic agents ethyl methanesulfonate (EtMes), N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), and ICR-191 on colonies of the Chinese hamster ovary line CHO cultured on a semisolid substrate. These agents induced heterogeneity in diameter and integrated optical density of colonies as determined by computer-assisted photography and subsequent analysis of the images of the colonies. When CHO colonies were exposed to agents such as urethane that are not known to be mutagenic in mammalian systems or to activation-requiring mutagens such as cyclophosphamide, there was no noticeable effect on the distribution of colony diameter and volume.
