Decisions about College Football during Covid-19: An Ethical Analysis.

This manuscript uses competitive college football as a lens into the complexities of decision-making amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Pulling together what is known about the decision-makers, the decision-making processes, the social and political context, the risks and benefits, and the underlying obligations of institutions to these athletes, we conduct an ethical analysis of the decisions surrounding the 2020 fall football season. Based on this ethical analysis, we provide key recommendations to improve similar decision processes moving forward.

Neurosteroid Levels in the Orbital Frontal Cortex of Subjects with PTSD and Controls: A Preliminary Report.

Background: Neurosteroids mediate stress signaling and have been implicated in the pathogenesis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in both preclinical and clinical studies. Compared to controls, subjects with PTSD exhibit altered neurosteroid levels in peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid as well as hypoactivity in the medial orbital frontal cortex (mOFC). Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare neurosteroid levels in the mOFC of subjects with PTSD (n = 18) and controls (n = 35).

Public health in the Vilna Ghetto as a form of Jewish resistance.

We describe the system of public health that evolved in the Vilna Ghetto as an illustrative example of Jewish innovation and achievement during the Holocaust. Furthermore, we argue that by cultivating a sophisticated system of public health, the ghetto inmates enacted a powerful form of Jewish resistance, directly thwarting the intention of the Nazis to eliminate the inhabitants by starvation, epidemic, and exposure. In doing so, we aim to highlight applicable lessons for the broader public health literature.

Concussion management in United States college sports: compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association concussion policy and areas for improvement.

Background: In 2010, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) adopted its Concussion Policy and Legislation, which applies to more than 450,000 collegiate athletes annually. To date, there has been no examination of school-level compliance with the NCAA Concussion Policy.

Purpose: To examine whether stakeholders at NCAA schools report that their school has a concussion management plan and whether existing plans are consistent with the NCAA policy.

Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is a membrane-bound cell recognition molecule that exerts important functions in normal neurodevelopment including cell migration, neurite outgrowth, axon fasciculation, and synaptic plasticity. Alternative splicing of NCAM mRNA generates three main protein isoforms: NCAM-180, -140, and -120. Ectodomain shedding of NCAM isoforms can produce an extracellular 105-115 kilodalton soluble neural cell adhesion molecule fragment (NCAM-EC) and a smaller intracellular cytoplasmic fragment (NCAM-IC).

Regulation of complexin 1 and complexin 2 in the developing human prefrontal cortex.

Complexin 1 (CX1) and complexin 2 (CX2) are presynaptic proteins that modulate neurotransmitter release and are used as markers of inhibitory and excitatory synapses, respectively. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the development of inhibitory and excitatory synapses in human prefrontal cortex (PFC) by examining the expression of CX1 and CX2 in postmortem tissues. Relative complexin protein levels were measured by Western blotting in postmortem dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of 42 subjects without neurological or psychiatric disease ranging in age from 18 gestational weeks to 25 years.

A role for apoptosis in schizophrenia could potentially contribute to post-mortem evidence of reduced cortical neuropil and neuroimaging studies showing progressive cortical gray matter loss. Interestingly, antipsychotic treatment has been associated with higher cortical levels of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein in rat cortex and preliminary data has suggested a similar association in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
