Objective: To describe early and late fetal growth in pregnancies conceived after gastric bypass surgery in relation to time from surgery to conception of pregnancy.
Methods: National cohort study on 387 Danish women, who had laparoscopic or open gastric bypass surgery prior to a singleton pregnancy in which first trimester screening was performed between January 2008 and June 2011. Data were derived from national registers (Danish National Registry of Patients and Danish National Birth Registry, Pregnancy Complications and Abortion-clinical quality database (PreCAb) and the Danish Fetal Medicine Database).
Background: Prenatal screening and diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities especially Down's syndrome in IVF pregnancies are complicated by higher maternal age, a high multiple pregnancy rate, a high risk of a vanishing twin and an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities, particularly in pregnancies after ICSI. The aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate the findings of first trimester screening for chromosomal abnormalities in IVF/ICSI singleton and twin pregnancies.
Methods: A systematic MESH-term search in MEDLINE using PubMed and the Cochrane Library was performed until May 2011, with no earlier date limit.
In the latest years the number of pregnant women having undergone bariatric surgery before pregnancy has increased rapidly. In pregnancy, they seem to have a reduced risk of obesity-related complications but an increased risk of mechanical complications causing small bowel obstruction and complications due to malabsorption. This article reviews the effect of bariatric surgery before pregnancy on obstetric and neonatal outcomes and provides, based on the limited available evidence, recommendations for the management of pregnancy in these women.

We examined the efficiency of a second generation assay for ADAM12.
Materials And Methods: ADAM12 concentrations were determined in 28 first trimester DS and 503 control pregnancies using a novel Research Delfia ADAM12 kit.

Objectives: To determine the levels of first-trimester screening markers and to assess the false-positive rate for first-trimester combined screening for Down syndrome in a large national population of women pregnant after assisted reproductive technology (ART), in order to decide whether or not to correct risk calculation for mode of conception.
Methods: A national prospective cohort study of 1000 pregnancies achieved after ART was compared with a control group of 2543 pregnancies conceived spontaneously. All women completed a first-trimester combined screening program.
Background: Previous studies have found that 1 in 10 in vitro fertilization (IVF) singletons originates from a twin gestation. First trimester Down's syndrome screening markers are altered in assisted reproductive techniques (ART) pregnancies compared with spontaneously conceived pregnancies. The presence of a perished embryo may further complicate prenatal screening among women pregnant after ART.

Methods: GA was calculated using either DOA or CRL at blood sampling and nuchal translucency thickness (NT) measurement in 729 singleton pregnancies conceived by in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Weight-corrected log multiples of the median (MoM) marker distributions specific for IVF pregnancy were established using multiple log regression and compared for DOA- and CRL-based GA calculation.
In bipolar disorder, the factors provoking a new episode are unknown. As a seasonal variation has been noticed, it has been suggested that weather conditions may play a role. The aim of the study was to elucidate whether meteorological parameters influence the development of new bipolar phases.

Furthermore, a significantly increased rate of chromosomal abnormalities after intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI) has been reported. The aim of this study was to describe the use and results of prenatal invasive diagnostic testing in a national Danish cohort of in vitro fertilization (IVF)/ICSI pregnancies.

Objective: The aim of the present study was (1) to evaluate the relationship between umbilical cord arterial blood lactate and pH, standard base excess (SBE), and actual base excess (ABE) at delivery and (2) to suggest a cut-off level of umbilical cord arterial blood lactate in predicting fetal asphyxia using ROC-curves, where an ABE value less than -12 was used as "gold standard" for significant intrapartum asphyxia.
Study Design: This is a descriptive study of umbilical cord arterial blood samples from 2554 singleton deliveries. The deliveries took place at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Hvidovre University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark where umbilical cord blood sampling and blood gas analysis is part of the routine assessment of all newborns.
Women who get pregnant after infertility treatment differ from women with naturally conceived pregnancies concerning prenatal screening: on average they are older and therefore they have a greater risk of carrying a child with Down's syndrome, their children have an increased risk of congenital malformations, and they have a great wish to avoid invasive prenatal diagnostic tests. The conclusion of this review is that first trimester screening is an acceptable choice for these women, although larger studies are needed to clarify whether a correction factor is necessary for the biochemical markers.

Moderate to severe depression and mania are associated with a reduced thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) response to TSH releasing hormone (TRH). Continued reduction of this response after clinical recovery seems indicative of early relapse. The aim of the present study was to test the relationship between mild changes in mood and the TSH response to TRH stimulation in patients with bipolar affective disorder.

The life event research has revealed many biases and the results are conflicting. In a prospective study we examined the relationship between life events and affective phases in a group of bipolar patients with a long duration of the disease.

Ninety-six patients and 66 staff members answered the Ward Atmosphere Scale (WAS) questionnaire, comprising a 100-item "real-form" concerning the ward atmosphere as it is actually perceived and a 100-item "ideal-form" concerning the atmosphere in an imagined "best of all" ward. Staff scores were significantly higher than patient scores on the WAS-R subscales Involvement, Spontaneity, Practical orientation, Personal problems orientation and Program clarity, and on the WAS-I subscales Spontaneity, Practical orientation, and Anger and aggression.

The relationship between SAD and the classical manic-depressive disorder is uncertain.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between patients' perception of the real and ideal ward atmosphere and their satisfaction.
Method: Patients filled in the Ward Atmosphere Scale (WAS, Real and Ideal Form) and a satisfaction questionnaire. Patient characteristics were derived from clinical assessments.
Developments in psychiatry have been steered by a number of factors influencing decisions taken by the politicians. Some of the more typical factors that could be mentioned are: political attitudes; trend phenomena in the population; economic aspects; and evidence-based knowledge. Bearing in mind the results of developments in psychiatry during the last decades, psychiatrists are encouraged to live up to their responsibility by focusing on scientific results, when giving their advice to politicians.

The cohort was subclassified for seasonal pattern according to DSM-III-R. Meteorological data of temperature, hours of sunshine, rainfall and wind-velocity expressed as mean values/month were obtained from the Institute of Meteorology in Copenhagen.

The MDS contains the nine DSM-IV items for major depression which all have anchoring scores from 0 to 4; hence, the theoretical score range is up to 36. The Major Depression Rating Scale has in this study been psychometrically analysed in randomized moclobemide trials.
