Article Synopsis
  • Fasting has been shown to enhance health, lifespan, and tissue repair across various organisms, including humans, but the impact of post-fast refeeding on adult stem cells and cancer development is not well understood.
  • Research indicates that refeeding after fasting boosts intestinal stem cell growth and increases the risk of tumors, especially when the tumor suppressor gene Apc is absent in the stem cells.
  • The study's findings highlight the activation of mTORC1 in post-fast-refed stem cells, which promotes protein synthesis and regeneration, suggesting that diet strategies should carefully manage refeeding to avoid raising cancer risks.

Objectives: Treatment of colorectal peritoneal metastases with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is still evolving. Conducting a randomized trial is challenging due to the high heterogeneity in the presentation of peritoneal disease and various surgical approaches. Biological research may facilitate more rapid translation of information into clinical practice.

Background: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role in the biological and biochemical processes of cells, and it is a critical process in the malignant transformation, and mobility of cancer. Additionally, EMT is one of the main mechanisms contributing to chemoresistance. Resistance to oxaliplatin (OXA) poses a momentous challenge in the chemotherapy of advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, highlighting the need to reverse drug resistance and improve patient survival.

For more than a century, fasting regimens have improved health, lifespan, and tissue regeneration in diverse organisms, including humans. However, how fasting and post-fast refeeding impact adult stem cells and tumour formation has yet to be explored in depth. Here, we demonstrate that post-fast refeeding increases intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation and tumour formation: Post-fast refeeding augments the regenerative capacity of 5 intestinal stem cells (ISCs), and loss of the tumour suppressor in ISCs under post-fast refeeding leads to a higher tumour incidence in the small intestine and colon than in the fasted or (AL) fed states.

Biological invasion is the successful spread and establishment of a species in a novel environment that adversely affects the biodiversity, ecology, and economy. Both invasive and non-invasive species of the genus secrete more than thirty different secondary metabolites. Caulerpin is one of the most common secondary metabolites in genus .

Background: The aim of the study was in-silico drug-likeness analysis, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties, and molecular docking studies of anthocyanins as natural anticancer compounds against acting receptor-like kinase 5 (ALK5) receptor. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) plays an essential role in various cellular processes. Increased expression of TGF-β and its receptor TGFβR-I (i.

Background: Nanomedicine has provided promising tools for the imaging, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) may be useful in enhancing the efficacy of radiotherapy, such as radiosensitization, in cancer therapy.

Aims: To develop a nanodrug complex containing cetuximab (C225,CTX) and cisplatin (CDDP) conjugated with GNPs and to investigate its cytotoxic effects on oral cavity cancer cells when combined with radiotherapy.

Food and nutrition have a profound impact on organismal health and diseases, and tissue-specific adult stem cells play a crucial role in coordinating tissue maintenance by responding to dietary cues. Emerging evidence indicates that adult intestinal stem cells (ISCs) actively adjust their fate decisions in response to diets and nutritional states to drive intestinal adaptation. Here, we review the signaling mechanisms mediating the dietary responses imposed by caloric intake and nutritional composition (i.

Epidermal growth factor receptor mutations are potential markers driving carcinogenesis, and may alter the response to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The frequency of mutations in patients with NSCLC differs according to sex, smoking habits and regional-based ethnicity differences. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of mutations in Turkish patients with NSCLC to highlight the importance of regional differences, and their associations with patient characteristics.

Little is known about how metabolites couple tissue-specific stem cell function with physiology. Here we show that, in the mammalian small intestine, the expression of Hmgcs2 (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA synthetase 2), the gene encoding the rate-limiting enzyme in the production of ketone bodies, including beta-hydroxybutyrate (βOHB), distinguishes self-renewing Lgr5 stem cells (ISCs) from differentiated cell types. Hmgcs2 loss depletes βOHB levels in Lgr5 ISCs and skews their differentiation toward secretory cell fates, which can be rescued by exogenous βOHB and class I histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor treatment.

Exhaled breath is a source of volatile and nonvolatile biomarkers in the body that can be accessed non-invasively and used for monitoring. The collection of lung secretions by conventional methods such as bronchoalveolar lavage, induced sputum collection, and core biopsies is limited by the invasive nature of these methods. Non-invasive collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) provides fluid samples that are representative of airway lining fluids.

Fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy is extensively used for the treatment of solid cancers, including colorectal cancer. However, fluoropyrimidine-driven toxicities are a major problem in the management of the disease. The grade and type of the toxicities depend on demographic factors, but substantial inter-individual variation in fluoropyrimidine-related toxicity is partly explained by genetic factors.

Objectives: To investigate gene expression differences and related functions between primary tumor, malignant cells in ascites, and metastatic peritoneal implant in high-grade serous ovarian cancer.

Methods: Biopsies from primary tumor, peritoneal implant, and ascites were collected from 10 patients operated primarily for high-grade, advanced-staged serous ovarian cancer. Total RNA isolation was performed from collected tissue biopsy and fluid samples, and RNA expression profile was measured.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer that affects women worldwide. Early detection of BC is important to improve survival rates and decrease mortality. The aim of the present study was to investigate serum biomarkers using surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) to distinguish patients with BC from the healthy population and patients with benign breast diseases (BBDs).

Cancer microenvironment is a remarkably heterogeneous composition of cellular and non-cellular components, regulated by both external and intrinsic physical and chemical stimuli. Physical alterations driven by increased proliferation of neoplastic cells and angiogenesis in the cancer microenvironment result in the exposure of the cancer cells to elevated levels of flow-based shear stress. We developed a dynamic microfluidic cell culture platform utilizing eshopagael cancer cells as model cells to investigate the phenotypic changes of cancer cells upon exposure to fluid shear stress.

Most of the gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) have gain-of-function mutations in the KIT gene, which can be used as a prognostic marker for the biological behavior of tumors, predictive marker for the response of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and diagnostic marker. Researchers have focused on PDGFRA mutations because of both their prognostic and predictive potential and DOG1 positivity for diagnosis on GISTs. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect DOG1, PDGFRA, and KIT mutations on the prediction of the outcome for GIST management.
