Population studies provide insights into the interplay between the gut microbiome and geographical, lifestyle, genetic and environmental factors. However, low- and middle-income countries, in which approximately 84% of the world's population lives, are not equitably represented in large-scale gut microbiome research. Here we present the AWI-Gen 2 Microbiome Project, a cross-sectional gut microbiome study sampling 1,801 women from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.

The Effect of Statins on Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and C-Reactive Protein in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis.

Background: The effect of statins on CIMT progression and C-reactive protein (CRP) in T2DM patients is widely reported. However, some studies demonstrated no effect of statins on CIMT and CRP in T2DM patients, while others reported otherwise. Thus, the current study comprehensively and quantitatively analyzes data from previous studies to evaluate the overall effect of statins on CIMT and CRP in T2DM to rule out any inconsistencies observed in previous clinical evidence.

Folic acid supplementation on inflammation and homocysteine in type 2 diabetes mellitus: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Background: The beneficial effects of folate have been observed under different conditions, but the available evidence on inflammation and reduction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is limited. The study aimed to explore the effects of folate on inflammation and homocysteine amongst individuals with T2DM.

Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were used to search for evidence.
