Fractal structures pervade nature and are receiving increasing engineering attention towards the realization of broadband resonators and antennas. We show that fractal resonators can support the emergence of high-dimensional chaotic dynamics even in the context of an elementary, single-transistor oscillator circuit. Sierpiński gaskets of variable depth are constructed using discrete capacitors and inductors, whose values are scaled according to a simple sequence.

Background: We aimed to investigate the effect of cell-cell dipole interactions in the equilibrium distributions in dielectrophoretic devices.

Methods: We used a three dimensional coupled Monte Carlo-Poisson method to theoretically study the final distribution of a system of uncharged polarizable particles suspended in a static liquid medium under the action of an oscillating non-uniform electric field generated by polynomial electrodes. The simulated distributions have been compared with experimental ones observed in the case of MDA-MB-231 cells in the same operating conditions.

Several studies have investigated the role played by killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and their ligands on the outcome of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients affected by oncohematologic diseases. However, the interpretation of the results of these studies is considerably hampered by the heterogeneity of the diseases, disease status at transplantation, and the different protocols employed for both conditioning and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. To better define the role of KIRs in HSCT, we studied KIR genotypes and HLA class I ligands in a homogeneous group of 45 thalassemia patients transplanted with bone marrow cells from an HLA-identical, unrelated donor.

Mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL) is a B-cell malignancy with distinct molecular genetics and pathological features. Peripheral blood involvement has been reported with variable frequency, but information on the natural history of cases presenting with leukemia is lacking. This study aimed to determine the clinical and prognostic features of such cases.

Staging systems and laboratory features help predict survival in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia but they do not distinguish patients who will progress from those whose disease will remain indolent. CD38 expression has emerged as an independent prognostic factor, yet there is debate as to what level of CD38 affects prognosis. We plotted the hazard ratios for the treatment-free interval (TFI) between the higher and lower groups defined by CD38 cut-offs from 0 to 100%.

Aims: To describe and revise a flow cytometric assay for evaluating cyclin D1 overexpression in B cell lymphoproliferative disorders (B-LPDs).

Methods: Cyclin D1 expression was evaluated in 11 healthy controls and 51 patients with B-LPD by flow cytometry using the 5D4 monoclonal antibody. In 25 cases, experiments were repeated up to four times with mononuclear cells (MNC) fixed in ethanol for 1-120 days to evaluate the consistency of cyclin D1 expression.

We evaluated the presence of P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-170, multidrug resistance protein (MRP), lung resistance protein (LRP)-56 and Bcl-2 in CD19-positive cells from 100 cases of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). P-gp-170 was found in 73% of the CLL cases with no significant difference regarding stage or previous treatment. LRP-56 protein was homogeneously distributed with no differences for stage or treatment.

An increase of angiogenesis has been shown in idiopathic myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia (MMM) by microvessel density count method but evaluation of circulating angiogenic factors is still incomplete. In 31 patients affected by MMM and in 12 healthy subjects we evaluated the serum levels of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and correlated VEGF with clinical and laboratory features of disease. We found that MMM patients had circulating VEGF concentrations much higher than controls (Median 1208 ng/ml vs 138 ng/ml, P < 0.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematological malignancy resulting from clonal expansion and massive accumulation of leukemic myeloid cells that retain differentiation and maturation capacity. Since CML cell accumulation has been related to apoptosis inhibition by the product of the BCR-ABL gene, attempts to eradicate leukemic cells would require therapeutic drugs able to overcome this inherent resistance. Here, we investigated in vitro the apoptotic effect of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and cytosine arabinoside (ARA-C), employed alone, in combination or in sequence, on freshly isolated cells from 10 patients with chronic-phase CML.

Background And Objectives: To study the role of some soluble factors in the process of angiogenesis that accompanies multiple myeloma (MM).

Design And Methods: The concentrations of three well-known angiogenic peptides, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) were evaluated by an ELISA method. All of these factors were measured in the plasma obtained from peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) aspirates of 34 patients affected by plasma cell disorders.
