Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to compare the outcomes of surgical versus conservative treatments for acute Achilles tendon ruptures, focusing on complications, functional outcomes, and clinical results after at least one year of follow-up.
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis involving 405 patients treated in France between 2018 and 2019, gathering data on demographics, treatment methods, rehabilitation, and various clinical tests.
  • The results showed that while rerupture rates were similar between both groups, conservative treatment had a higher overall complication rate, while certain functional outcomes favored surgical treatment.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to compare the re-rupture rate, clinical results, and functional outcomes six months after the surgical repair of an acute Achilles tendon rupture between three different techniques (open repair, percutaneous repair with the Tenolig®, and minimally invasive repair).

Methods: A prospective, comparative, multicenter, non-randomized study was performed and included 111 patients who had an acute ruptured Achilles tendon: 74 underwent an open repair, 22 underwent a percutaneous repair using the Tenolig® and 15 had a minimally invasive repair. At six months follow-up we analyzed the number of re-ruptures, phlebitis, infections, complex regional pain syndrome, clinical outcomes (muscle atrophy, ankle dorsal flexion), functional scores (ATRS, VISA-A, EFAS, SF-12), and return to running.

Background: The first two studies of an artificial pancreas (AP) system carried out in Latin America took place in 2016 (phase 1) and 2017 (phase 2). They evaluated a hybrid algorithm from the University of Virginia (UVA) and the automatic regulation of glucose (ARG) algorithm in an inpatient setting using an AP platform developed by the UVA. The ARG algorithm does not require carbohydrate (CHO) counting and does not deliver meal priming insulin boluses.

Introduction: The primary objective of this study was to compare the radiological and clinical results of anterograde and retrograde screwing in subtalar arthrodesis using a single compression screw. The secondary objective was to evaluate the subjective results and consolidation of this procedure. The hypotheses were that isolated screw fixation was sufficient to achieve good consolidation and that there was no difference between the two techniques with a similar rate of bone fusion.

Osteotomies during rhinoplasty are usually based on the surgeon's proprioception to determine the number and the strength of the impacts. The aim of this study is to determine whether a hammer instrumented with a force sensor can be used to classify fractures and to determine the location of the osteotome tip. Two lateral osteotomies were realized in nine anatomical subjects using an instrumented hammer recording the evolution of the impact force.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteotomies during rhinoplasty usually rely on the surgeon's instinct to decide on the amount and direction of force applied.
  • The study aimed to identify when fractures occur and when the osteotome hits the thicker frontal bone by using an instrumented hammer to record impact forces on human specimens.
  • A machine learning algorithm successfully predicted fracture occurrences and the proximity to the frontal bone with high accuracy rates (up to 93%) and provided real-time feedback for surgeons.

Osteotomies are common surgical procedures used for instance in rhinoplasty and usually performed using an osteotome impacted by a mallet. Visual control being difficult, osteotomies are often based on the surgeon proprioception to determine the number and energy of each impact. The aim of this study is to determine whether a hammer instrumented with a piezoelectric force sensor can be used to (i) follow the displacement of the osteotome and (ii) determine when the tip of the osteotome arrives in frontal bone, which corresponds to the end of the osteotomy pathway.

Purpose: The aims of this study were (1) to collect prospectively all tibial plateau fractures admitted to our department, over two ski seasons, and to classify them according to the Schatzker and AO classifications; (2) to assess if these classifications are accurate enough to include all types of fractures; and (3) to compare theses fractures with the series found in the literature, which included very few or no skiing accidents.

Methods: During the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 ski seasons, we prospectively included 116 tibial plateau fractures caused by downhill skiing accidents. All patients underwent standard X-rays and 2D and 3D CT scans.

In the literature, first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis with lesser metatarsal head resection seems to be a reliable procedure in rheumatoid foot deformity. Maybe this procedure could be proposed in nonrheumatoid severe forefoot deformity (hallux valgus angle >40° and lesser metatarsophalangeal dislocation). The aim of this study was to compare radiological and clinical outcomes between lesser metatarsal head resection and lesser metatarsal head osteotomy in nonrheumatoid patients.

The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the strength of ankle evertor muscles in patients who have undergone a lateral ankle ligamentoplasty (which combined tensioning of the primary ligament group and reinforcing it with a pediculated extensor retinaculum flap), using 2 measurement systems (isokinetic and the functional weightbearing test [MyoLux). Our hypothesis was the strength of evertor muscles on the treated side was comparable to that of the contralateral healthy side. This prospective study included 23 patients who had chronic ankle instability and underwent an inferior extensor retinaculum flap ligamentoplasty.

Purposes: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in osteoporotic acetabular fractures is quite difficult with high risk of implant failure. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) may be an effective option for treating acetabular fractures in appropriately selected patients, with immediate full weightbearing. The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional outcomes of primary THA for acetabular fractures in elderly patients.

Background: Emerging therapies such as closed-loop (CL) glucose control, also known as artificial pancreas (AP) systems, have shown significant improvement in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) management. However, demanding patient intervention is still required, particularly at meal times. To reduce treatment burden, the automatic regulation of glucose (ARG) algorithm mitigates postprandial glucose excursions without feedforward insulin boluses.

Gingival fibrous nodule.

Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod

October 1999

Five patients with small, exophytic, asymptomatic fibrous nodules, single or multiple, of the mandibular mucogingival zone of the anterior labial gingiva are presented. Such nodules are benign and resemble small fibromas. The clinical and histologic appearance distinguishes them from entities such as retrocuspid papilla, reticular mandibular gingival ridges, oral hamartomas associated with Cowden's syndrome, tuberous sclerosis oral lesions, and oral nodules secondary to epidermolysis bullosa.
