Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the adrenal gland: A case report and review of literature.

Reports about adrenocortical carcinomas (AC) mixed with sarcomatous areas are very rare. The terminology and pathogenesis of such biphasic tumors remain controversial. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the adrenal gland in a 75-year-old woman who presented with left abdominal pain of one month's standing.

Synovial B cells of rheumatoid arthritis express ZAP-70 which increases the survival and correlates with the inflammatory and autoimmune phenotype.

B cells have acquired an important role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) since B cell depletion allowed to rescue patients poorly responders to TNFalpha blockers. This study focused on the involvement of ZAP-70 as a bio-marker of B cells immune activation in RA. ZAP-70 expression in synovial fluid (SF) B cells obtained from RA patients was increased compared to SF B cells of osteoarthritis (OA) patients.

Immunohistochemical expression of the glucose transporters Glut-1 and Glut-3 in human malignant melanomas and benign melanocytic lesions.

Background: Reported data indicate that cancer cells have increased rates of glucose metabolism, as determined by 18FDG-PET imaging in patients with malignancies. The results of many studies have demonstrated that the expression of glucose transporters, especially Glut-1, is increased in a variety of malignancies. This study was undertaken to assess the differential expression of Glut-1 and Glut-3 by benign and malignant melanocytic lesions.

Hamartomatous sialolipoma of the submandibular gland: case report.

Sialolipoma is a rare tumour of the salivary gland that is composed of mature adipocytes and normal salivary gland tissue. We report an unusual case of a sialolipoma of the submandibular gland in a 77-year-old woman. The location of this tumour has not to our knowledge been previously described.

Synchronous bilateral testicular germ cell tumor with different histology. Case report and review of the literature.

A rare case of synchronous bilateral testicular germ cell tumor of different histological type is described. We report the case of a 39-year-old man with this unusual condition and discuss the value of the histopathological diagnosis in therapy and prognosis. A thorough review of the literature is also presented, and for the first time the precise histological subtype of each reported tumor, as diagnosed by the authors of the original paper, is illustrated.

Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma arising in the nasal cavity.

We report here the case of an epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE) arising in the nasal cavity which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first ever described example in the world literature in that particular site. The patient is a 23-year-old male who presented with repeated episodes of epistaxis from the nasal cavity and with a 1.5 cm reddish, polypoid, smooth, spontaneously bleeding nodule in the right middle meatus.

Gastric adenocarcinoma associated with granulomatous gastritis. Case report and review of the literature.

Aims: We describe the fourth reported case of granulomatous gastritis associated with gastric adenocarcinoma, with a review of the literature and considerations about the prognostic implications of this association.

Results: A 48-year-old woman who had been suffering from gastritis for ten years was admitted to our institute for increasing left epigastric pain associated with vomiting. After an endoscopic biopsy had revealed an ulcerated signet ring cell carcinoma, the patient was submitted to subtotal gastrectomy with regional lymph node dissection.

Galectin-3, a marker of well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma, is expressed in thyroid nodules with cytological atypia.

Aims: The distribution of galectin-3, a widely recognized marker of well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma, was investigated in 95 thyroid lesions including nodules with foci of cytoarchitectural atypia.

Methods And Results: Twenty-eight papillary carcinomas, five follicular carcinomas, one Hurthle cell carcinoma, three poorly differentiated carcinomas, one anaplastic carcinoma, 25 nodular hyperplasias and 27 follicular adenomas, including nodules with atypical features, three neoplasms of undetermined malignant potential and two thyroiditis cases were examined. By immunohistochemistry, galectin-3 was consistently found in carcinomas; otherwise benign nodules exhibited galectin-3-positive clusters of cells with poorly developed features of differentiated carcinoma (mainly of papillary type) such as nuclear chromatin clearing, nuclear clefting, pseudoinclusions, which, in each case, were not histologically sufficient to warrant a definitive diagnosis of malignancy.

Primary malignant lymphoma of the saphenous vein.

We herein present a case of primary malignant lymphoma of the saphenous vein. A 72-year-old man suffered from tumor and pain of the anteromedial aspect of the left upper thigh. Local thigh ultrasound scanning and computed tomography revealed a mass within the superior third of the internal saphenous vein.

Protective features of monoclonal antibodies to Escherichia coli during experimental infection of mice with homologous and heterologous serotypes of E. coli.

Murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) MT1F and ARM1-4, recognising proteins on the surface of untreated Escherichia coli O6:K-, protected 100% of mice challenged intraperitoneally with 2 x LD50 of the same strain. MAb MT1F protected 70% of animals challenged with 2 x LD50 of E. coli O111:B4, whereas ARM1-4 gave complete protection.
