Article Synopsis
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) in Golden Retrievers (GR) is an inherited, progressive condition leading to vision loss, with the study focused on gene mutation frequencies in Brazilian GRs.
  • All 121 GR samples analyzed were found to be wild-type for mutations PRA1 and PRA2, indicating no carriers in this population, while a small percentage (2.47%) showed heterozygous status for mutation PRA-prcd.
  • The study highlights a lack of awareness among Brazilian breeders regarding the genetic factors of PRA and aims to educate and inform about these mutations for future research.

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) is the ability of highly aggressive cancer cells to form fluid-conducting channels that facilitate the nutrition and metastasis of cancer cells. Considering the importance of VM in the prognosis of canine mammary gland tumours, this study aimed to investigate global gene expression in two canine mammary carcinoma cell cultures associated with the capacity for VM in vitro. The cell lines were subjected to an in-vitro assay to form VM channels (3D culture).

Canine mammary gland tumor (CMT) is one of the most important tumors in intact female dogs, and due its similarity to human breast cancer (BC), it is considered a model in comparative oncology. A subset of mammary gland tumors can show aggressive behavior, and a recurrent histological finding is the presence of vasculogenic mimicry (VM). VM is a process in which highly aggressive cancer cells fuse, forming fluid-conducting channels without endothelial cells.
