Moreover, there are evidences supporting a mechanistic link between Alzheimer's disease and insulin resistance (one of the first hallmarks of Type 2 diabetes). Their functional integrity is maintained by mitostasis, a process that involves mitochondrial transport, anchoring, fusion and fission processes regulated by different signaling pathways but mainly by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α). PGC-1α also favors Ca homeostasis, reduces oxidative stress, modulates inflammatory processes and mobilizes mitochondria to where they are needed.

Moreover, the aggregation of A is increased by oxidative stress, and the neurotoxicity induced by the oligomers and fibrils is in part mediated by free radicals.
