Introduction: Bladder Exstrophy and Epispadias Complex (BEEC) is associated with psychosocial difficulties. Screening questionnaires, alongside consultation with a clinical psychologist, can help identify children/young people for further assessment and track trends over time to improve service delivery.
Objective: To screen paediatric BEEC patients for a range of general psychosocial difficulties in a multi-disciplinary out-patient clinic setting and compare these results with our previous study and against published norms.
Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the combination of a facial naevus flammeus and pial angioma, often associated with learning difficulties and/or epilepsy. Here, we report on the neuropsychological characteristics of a cohort of 92 children with SWS seen at a national referral center between 2002 and 2015. Almost a quarter (24%) had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with 45% overall having evidence of social communication difficulties (SCD).

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of two enzyme immunoassays (EIA), Murex and ICE, and the Determine TP point-of-care test (POCT) in diagnosing treponemal infection (syphilis or yaws) in patients attending a large HIV clinic in Ghana; to determine the prevalence of treponemal co-infections; and to characterise demographic and clinical features of patients with infection.
Methods: Samples were tested with EIAs and rapid plasma reagin (RPR), then POCT and reference assays for Treponema pallidum to determine prevalence of active and past infection. Sensitivity and specificity of each assay were calculated and demographic and clinical characteristics of patients compared.

The excitatory amino acid receptor agonists N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) produced smaller increases, which were blocked by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NG-nitroarginine (NOArg), indicating that these cGMP responses were mediated by nitric oxide. Immunocytochemistry revealed that, in response to NMDA, cGMP accumulated in a population of small cells and neuropil in laminae II and III of the dorsal horn.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFUsing NADPH-diaphorase staining as a marker for the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS) we have investigated the possible sites of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in a number of cranial ganglia in the rat. Intense staining was found in the majority of neurones in the sphenopalatine ganglion, suggesting a major role for NO in postganglionic parasympathetic systems in the head. In contrast the neurones of the superior cervical ganglion were not stained by this histochemical procedure but were enveloped by a mesh of intensely staining fibres.

A statistical analysis of their songs revealed that individuality occurred throughout the females' songs from both sites. Individuality in gibbon songs may allow singing individuals to more efficiently and effectively locate and identify neighboring nonmate conspecifics.

The posture during feeding depended on the substrate, with the gibbons sitting on branches but hanging in twigs. During foraging the gibbons hung more, even on branches, but as only short stops were made this is probably to increase mobility.

A new estimate of the phylogenetic relationships among the nine gibbon taxa is presented, based on a compatibility analysis of 55 morphological and behavioural characters. The phylogeny presented here differs somewhat from those of other studies, but there appears to be a basic consensus that: the siamang and concolor gibbons represent the earliest forms to speciate; the agile, lar, moloch, Müller's, and pileated gibbons represent the lates forms to speciate; with the Kloss and hoolock gibbons representing intermediate forms. Although the hypotheses regarding the evolutionary direction of these characters remain subjective due to the lack of gibbons in the fossil record, the method used is totally objective in its approach and is repeatable when further data become available.
